Measure the room and plan clearances
Measure the room and note doors, windows, vents and outlets before choosing pieces. Coffee tables work best at about two thirds the length of the sofa, with 14 to 18 inches of legroom between them. Dining tables need at least 36 inches from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture so chairs can slide back, and 42 to 48 inches if that path is also a walkway. Allow about 24 inches of table width per diner. Round and oval tables seat more people in tight rooms and keep traffic flowing.
Understand materials and construction
Solid hardwood can be refinished and lasts for decades, but it moves with humidity. Wood veneer over a stable core resists warping and allows striking grain patterns at a lower price. Lacquered finishes are smooth and wipeable, while marble and stone tops are heavy and need sealing to resist stains. Metal bases in brass, steel or iron add stability and weight. Check the joinery: dovetails, mortise and tenon, and corner blocks signal sturdier work than staples and glue alone.
Choose seating for comfort and use
Standard dining and desk heights put the seat around 18 inches with a table at 29 to 30 inches. Office chairs should offer adjustable seat height, lumbar support and, for long workdays, adjustable arms. For upholstered pieces, high density foam and tight weaves or leather hold up best in busy homes.
Keep the style consistent
Pick a dominant material or finish, such as warm wood, brushed brass or white lacquer, and repeat it in two or three pieces across the room. Mixing styles works best when scale and color tone line up. Bring paint or fabric swatches when comparing finishes, since screen colors can vary.
