Sofas

Sofas covers the main seating piece for living rooms, family rooms and dens, from compact two and three seat sofas to sectionals, reclining sofas and sleeper styles in fabric, leather and performance upholstery. There are more than 700 sofas to choose from, and most pieces fall between about $1,500 and $3,700.
How to choose a sofa
Measure the room and the delivery path
A sofa should leave at least 30 inches of walkway around it and about 14 to 18 inches between its front edge and the coffee table. As a rule of thumb, aim for a sofa roughly two thirds the length of the wall it sits against. Before you order, measure every doorway, hallway, stair turn and elevator on the way in. Compare the narrowest opening with the sofa’s depth and height, not its length, since sofas are usually carried through on end. Removable legs can buy an extra inch or two.
Get the seat dimensions right
Seat depth changes how a sofa feels more than almost anything else. A depth of 20 to 22 inches suits upright sitting and shorter people; 24 inches or more suits lounging and taller households. Seat height of 17 to 19 inches works for most adults. Check arm height too if you like to lie down with your head on the arm, and look at back height if you want head support.
Check construction
Look for a kiln dried hardwood or engineered hardwood frame with corner blocks, rather than particleboard. Sinuous springs are common and comfortable; eight way hand tied springs are more traditional and costly. High density foam cushions, around 1.8 lb per cubic foot or higher, hold their shape longer, and foam wrapped in fiber or down adds softness. Power reclining sofas need an outlet nearby, so plan placement around it.
Choose upholstery for how you live
Households with pets and kids do well with tightly woven performance fabrics, microfiber or top grain leather, all of which wipe clean easily. Linen and loosely woven textiles look relaxed but show wear sooner. Darker and textured fabrics hide everyday marks, while removable cushion covers make deep cleaning simpler. Ask for the cleaning code (W, S, WS or X) before you buy.
Main product types
The range includes stationary sofas for formal living rooms, sectionals with chaise or corner configurations for larger family rooms, power and manual reclining sofas with features such as USB ports and storage consoles, and sleeper sofas for guest space. Styles run from contemporary and mid century modern to tufted traditional designs, with select pieces from HomeRoots.
