How to choose patio furniture sets
Size the set to your patio
Measure the usable area and subtract walkways. A five piece dining set with a 48 inch round table needs roughly a 10 by 10 foot space, while a seven or nine piece set with a rectangular table needs about 12 by 14 feet or more. Leave at least 36 inches behind each chair so people can stand and move past. For conversation sets, keep 14 to 18 inches between seat fronts and the coffee table, and about 30 inches of clear path around the group.
Choose the right frame material
Cast aluminum is heavy, rust resistant and stable in wind, which makes it a strong choice for exposed decks and rooftops. Extruded aluminum is lighter and easier to rearrange. All weather resin wicker woven over aluminum gives a relaxed look and handles sun and rain well. Steel frames are sturdy and budget friendly but need intact powder coating to resist rust. Teak develops a silver patina outdoors unless you oil it regularly.
Decide on seat types
Swivel and rocker chairs add comfort at the dining table and make it easier to turn toward conversation. Standard dining chairs stack or tuck in tighter. Check seat height against table height: dining height tables run about 29 inches, while counter and bar height sets sit higher and need taller chairs. Armchairs need more width per seat than armless chairs, so count on about 24 to 28 inches per person.
Look after cushions and finishes
Solution dyed acrylic fabrics resist fading and mildew better than standard polyester. Zippered cushion covers can come off for washing. Fitted covers or indoor storage during winter will add years to cushions and finishes, and a mild soap wash a few times per season keeps aluminum and wicker looking fresh. Tighten bolts at the start of each season, since frames can loosen with use.
