Outdoor Living & Garden

Outdoor Living & Garden brings together the pieces that turn a yard into usable living space: patio furniture and dining sets, gazebos and pergolas, garden sheds and storage, outdoor saunas, hot tubs and patio heaters. There are more than 1,600 products in this department, and most fall between about $115 for small accessories and $7,500 for larger structures and spas.
How to choose outdoor living and garden products
Measure the site and check the ground
Start with a tape measure and a level. Mark out the footprint of a gazebo, shed or sauna with stakes and string, then add at least 2 to 3 feet on each side for access and maintenance. Most structures need a flat, solid base such as a concrete pad, pavers or a framed deck; a hot tub filled with water can weigh several thousand pounds, so confirm your deck or slab can carry the load. Check local setback rules and if your city or HOA requires a permit for structures above a certain size.
Pick materials for your climate
Powder coated aluminum resists rust and suits coastal and humid areas. Cedar and other naturally rot resistant woods age well but need sealing every year or two. Vinyl and polyethylene resin need little more than washing. For furniture, all weather wicker over an aluminum frame holds up better than natural rattan, and solution dyed acrylic cushion fabric resists fading longer than polyester. In snow country, choose roofs and frames rated for snow load or plan to store pieces over winter.
Plan power, fuel and water
Outdoor saunas run on electric heaters that usually need a dedicated 240V circuit, or on wood burning stoves that need clearance and a proper chimney. Hot tubs typically need a 240V GFCI protected circuit. Patio heaters are sold for propane or natural gas, so choose between a portable tank and a fixed gas line before ordering. Bring in a licensed electrician or gas fitter early, since that work often sets your timeline.
Size seating to how you use the space
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per diner and at least 36 inches behind each chair to pull out and walk past. Deep seating groups need roughly 30 inches between sofa and coffee table edge for comfortable legroom.
