How to choose flatware and tableware
Decide how many place settings you need
A 5 piece place setting typically includes a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, soup or place spoon and teaspoon. Count your regular household and then add the number of guests you host at your largest dinner; many households plan for 8 to 12 settings. Buy all settings from the same pattern at once when possible so finishes and handles match exactly.
Understand materials and finishes
Stainless steel is durable and low maintenance. Silverplate has a layer of silver over a base metal, giving the warm look of sterling at a lower price; it develops tarnish over time and should be polished periodically. Decorative handles in horn style, resin or tortoiseshell looks add character but generally call for hand washing, since dishwasher heat and detergent can dull or loosen them. Read care instructions before you buy if dishwasher use is important to you.
Add serving pieces for how you entertain
Serving pieces fill the gaps between place settings. A carving set with a knife and fork makes slicing roasts and poultry cleaner; a fish serving set with a broad knife and fork lifts fillets without breaking them; serving spoons and forks handle sides and salads. Choose pieces in the same pattern as your flatware for a coordinated table, or pick a contrasting style as a statement.
Check weight, balance and storage
Heavier flatware tends to feel more substantial in the hand, while balance between the handle and head affects comfort over a long meal. Store silverplate in a lined chest or anti-tarnish cloth to slow tarnishing, and dry pieces immediately after washing to prevent water spots. Keep serving sets in their boxes when not in use to protect finishes.
Main product types
The category centers on 5 piece place settings, carving sets, fish serving sets and other serving utensils in black, black and white horn, and tortoiseshell styles, plus silverplate pieces. HomeRoots is among the featured brands. Mixing a matching flatware pattern with coordinated serving pieces is an easy way to give a dinner table a finished, consistent look.
