Ethanol Fireplace vs Electric Fireplace: Real Flame or Not

Choosing between an ethanol fireplace vs electric fireplace comes down to one question: do you want a real flame, or do you want a flame effect you can run all evening without thinking about it? A bioethanol fireplace burns liquid fuel for genuine fire and more heat. An electric fireplace gives you an LED flame, a modest fan-forced heater, and far fewer safety rules.

Below we compare the two using specs from the units we sell plus CPSC and UL safety guidance. For style, size and mounting basics, see our electric fireplace buying guide.

Ethanol fireplace vs electric fireplace: the short answer

Pick ethanol if a live flame matters most, you have a reasonably large room, and you are comfortable handling flammable fuel by the rules. Pick electric for push-button use, a remote and no fuel to store. For bedrooms, apartments and homes with young children, electric is the easier fit.

The bioethanol units we carry

We sell two wall-mounted bioethanol fireplaces made by The Bio Flame. Our listings and the maker’s own product pages agree on the main specs.

Pure 8,000 BTU

The Pure 8,000 BTU Stainless Steel Bioethanol Fireplace is rated at 8,000 BTU (2.3 kW) and, per the listing, heats about 248 sq ft on average. It measures 23.6 x 23.8 x 11.0 in (H x W x D), with stainless steel construction, 8 mm tempered glass and 2 fuel canisters. The listing cites CE approval, EN 16647 certification, third-party testing and a 3 year warranty. It is $1,556.

Xelo 12,000 BTU

The Xelo 12,000 BTU Stainless Steel Bioethanol Fireplace is taller and narrower: 31.5 in high, 19.7 in wide and 9.8 in deep, with a 13 in burner. It is rated at 12,000 BTU (3.5 kW) and about 430 sq ft on average, with the same EN 16647 and CE claims and a 3 year warranty. It is $2,619.

Neither our listing nor the maker’s page states fuel capacity or burn time per fill, so check the technical sheet if those matter to you.

Bioethanol fireplace pros and cons

Pros:

  • A real, moving flame.
  • No chimney, flue, gas line or wiring, so placement is flexible.
  • Higher rated heat output than the electric models below.

Cons:

  • You buy, pour and store a flammable liquid fuel.
  • Combustion gases and particles stay in the room (see below).
  • Every burn needs supervision.
  • Not a primary heat source: UL 1370 treats these as decorative appliances.

Are ethanol fireplaces safe?

They can be used safely, but only by following the manual exactly. The biggest documented danger is refilling. The CPSC has warned that “flame jetting” can occur when refilling alcohol or other liquid-burning fire pits if any flame is present: a small, hard-to-see flame ignites the fuel as it is poured and sends burning liquid toward people nearby. In its consumer alert on liquid-burning fire pits, the agency reported two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019, mostly tied to small tabletop “fire pots” and mini fireplaces. Wall-mounted units are a different product class, but the refilling lesson applies to any ethanol burner.

Practical rules for any bioethanol fireplace:

  • Never refill while the burner is lit or still hot. Let it go out fully and cool for the time the manual specifies.
  • Use only the fuel type the manufacturer specifies, and never use gel fuel in a unit designed for liquid.
  • Store fuel in its sealed container, away from the fireplace and out of reach of children.
  • Wipe up spills before lighting and keep the clearances in the manual (The Bio Flame suggests at least 12 in between the unit and a TV above).
  • Never leave a lit burner unattended, and keep a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm nearby.
  • Follow the manual and local code. In the US, the relevant safety standard is UL 1370 for unvented alcohol fuel burning decorative appliances; some jurisdictions restrict or regulate these appliances, so check before installing.

Do ethanol fireplaces need ventilation?

They do not need a chimney, but they do need adequate room air. Burning ethanol uses oxygen from the room and produces carbon dioxide and water vapor, and because the unit is unvented, everything it releases stays indoors. A chamber study in Environmental Science and Technology (Schripp et al., 2014, Fraunhofer WKI) tested four ethanol fireplaces with eight fuels under ventilation set to manufacturers’ recommendations. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were close to or above indoor guideline values in many cases, and the fireplaces were strong sources of fine and ultrafine particles. The authors concluded these devices have a considerable influence on indoor air.

So “zero emissions” claims are misleading. Respect the manufacturer’s minimum room size and ventilation, avoid small closed rooms, let in fresh air during longer burns, and treat the fireplace as occasional ambiance rather than all-day heat.

Ethanol fireplace heat output vs electric

On paper, ethanol wins: 8,000 BTU (Pure) and 12,000 BTU (Xelo) versus the 4,800 BTU supplemental heater the Amantii listings below describe. The trade-off is control. Electric heat can be set to low, high or auto, or switched off so you enjoy the flame without heat. An ethanol burner makes heat, and combustion byproducts, whenever it is lit, which can be too much in a small room or warm climate.

The electric side: Amantii models we carry

Our Amantii listings describe a 4,800 BTU fan-forced heater and a remote for heat and flame. Examples:

If flame realism is your main worry about going electric, our guide to the most realistic electric fireplace covers what makes LED flames convincing. For long-term budgeting, electric fireplace vs gas fireplace cost walks through install and running costs.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose ethanol for a larger or open plan room where a real flame is the point and you will supervise every burn.
  • Choose electric for bedrooms, apartments, homes with small children or pets, rooms with poor airflow, or flame without heat in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Are ethanol fireplaces safe indoors?

They can be when used exactly as the manual says: correct room size, fresh air, never refilling while lit or hot, and safe fuel storage. Follow the manual and local code.

Do ethanol fireplaces need ventilation?

No chimney is needed, but they release combustion products into the room and use room oxygen, so follow the manufacturer’s room size and ventilation guidance.

Is an ethanol fireplace hotter than an electric fireplace?

Usually. Our bioethanol units are rated at 8,000 and 12,000 BTU; the Amantii models here list 4,800 BTU, though electric heat can be turned off independently of the flame.

What are the main bioethanol fireplace pros and cons?

Pros: real flame, no venting or wiring, more heat. Cons: flammable fuel, indoor air impact, constant supervision.

Can I use an electric fireplace without any special wiring?

Many can. The Amantii Zero Clearance 26-In and Symmetry listings say the unit can be plugged in or is hard-wire ready. Check each manual for electrical requirements.
