Can you put a fire pit on a wood deck? Usually not a wood burning one, and sometimes yes for a gas fire table, as long as the manufacturer allows it and you follow its clearances. Embers and downward heat are what damage decking. A propane fire table with a sealed burner pan and a solid base sends most of its heat up and out. Here is what the manuals and decking makers say.
Wood burning vs gas: why a fire pit on a wood deck is a different question for each
A wood fire throws sparks and drops hot ash, and the bowl itself gets very hot underneath. Ohio Flame, which makes solid steel wood burning fire pits, answers its own FAQ question “Is this Fire Pit safe for my deck?” with “Please, no. We suggest that you not place Fire Pits on any flammable or combustible surface such as wooden decks.” Its safety list adds “Do NOT place on wooden decks” and says the fire pit “should not be placed less than (10) feet (3.05 m) from walls, structures or buildings.”
Gas tables are different: no embers, and the table body sits between the burner pan and your boards. That is why the answer shifts from “no” to “check the manual.” For a broader look at fuel types, see our outdoor fireplace vs fire pit comparison.
What composite decking makers say
Trex addresses this directly in its FAQ under “Can I build a firepit on my Trex deck?” Key lines, quoted exactly:
- “Propane tables are generally safe, as they don’t produce downward heat.”
- “Gas fireplaces should not be placed directly on Trex decking without proper protection.”
- “For wood-burning fire pits, these should not be placed directly on Trex decking unless a heat barrier is used.”
- “Trex can soften at temperatures as low as 176°F” and “the intense heat or embers from a wood-burning fire can damage the decking.”
Trex also notes that built in gas fire pits “are typically installed by cutting around the Trex decking, not directly on top of it.” Other decking brands have their own warranty terms; check them first.
What fire table manuals say about decks and clearances
Every gas table ships with its own placement rules. Examples:
- Prism Hardscapes publishes a clearance sheet for its Tavola series listing “60” (1.524 m) Burner to back wall,” “60” (1.524 m) Burner to sidewall,” “90” (2.29 m) Burner to ceiling,” and “0” Unit Base to Floor” with “0” No Hearth Required.” Confirm your model’s manual before reading that as wood deck approval.
- Other propane table manuals we reviewed say not to use the unit under an overhead enclosure or in an enclosed space.
Patio Resorts lists its tables as CSA certified with a built in burner and hidden tank storage, but our product data does not include deck rules, so ask us for the manual before you buy. If a manual says noncombustible surface only, that is the answer, whatever the decking brand says.
Fire pit heat shield and deck protector options
We checked our catalog for freestanding deck protector pads and fire pit heat shield mats and found none. What we do carry is aimed at built in gas fire pits: the HPC Deck Insulation Kit, 20 inch ($26.60) and the HPC Deck Insulation Kit, 39 inch ($60.80). HPC describes them as “for use when installing a gas fire pit on a wood or composite deck.” The basalt insulation goes inside the enclosure over a layer of paver blocks at least 1 inch thick, with the gas stub coming up through the deck, pavers and insulation. That is a job for a licensed gas installer.
Weight and load on raised decks
Fire tables range from light to very heavy. The Patio Resorts aluminum tables below list 57 to 81 lbs. The Prism Hardscapes Tavola 1 is listed at 360 lbs on a dealer spec page, before you add a full propane tank and a ring of guests. On a second story deck or a condo balcony, ask a deck builder or engineer whether the framing can carry a concentrated load in that spot.
Local fire code, HOA and lease rules
Fire codes are local, and multi family buildings are stricter. Fairfax County, Virginia, for example, applies International Fire Code Section 307.4.3, which says portable outdoor fireplaces “shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material,” with an exception for one and two family dwellings. That page covers wood burning devices, not gas, but it shows how quickly a balcony can be ruled out. Check with your fire marshal, HOA or lease, and insurer.
Propane tank placement, wind and covers
Most of the tables below hide a 20 lb tank in the base, which keeps the hose short and off the deck. Keep spare cylinders off the deck entirely and never store them under the table. A glass guard tames wind; our fire pit wind guard guide covers sizing. Use the burner cover when the table is off, and let it cool fully before putting on a fabric cover.
Deck safe fire pit checklist
- Gas fuel only, never wood or charcoal on a wood or composite deck.
- Manual allows your surface; follow its side and overhead clearances exactly.
- Decking maker’s warranty does not exclude heat damage from your setup.
- No roof, pergola, umbrella or tree branches overhead within the stated clearance.
- Deck framing rated for the table, tank and people.
- Fire code, HOA and lease confirmed in writing.
- Tank inside the base or per the manual.
- Fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave the flame unattended.

Frequently asked questions
Is a propane fire table a deck safe fire pit?
Often, but not automatically. Trex calls propane tables “generally safe” because they do not produce downward heat, yet the table’s own manual decides. If it calls for a noncombustible surface, do not use it on wood or composite.
Do I need a fire pit heat shield under a gas fire table?
Not if the manual allows direct placement, though a noncombustible pad adds margin. Built in gas fire pits on decks need real insulation, such as the HPC basalt kits over pavers, installed by a pro.
Can I use a wood burning fire pit on a composite deck?
We would not. Ohio Flame says no for wooden decks, and Trex says wood burning pits should not sit directly on its boards without a heat barrier, noting the material can soften at 176°F.
Can I put a fire table on an apartment balcony?
Many fire codes, leases and HOAs restrict open flame on multi family balconies. Get written approval first.
