Fire Pit Table Height: Chat, Dining, Counter or Bar

Fire pit table height decides how people actually use the table: low chat tables pair with lounge chairs, dining height suits a meal, and counter and bar heights work with stools. Most gas fire tables fall into one of four bands, roughly 24 to 25 inches for chat, about 28 to 30 inches for dining, 34 to 38 inches for counter and 40 to 43 inches for bar. This guide shows how to match the height to your seating, how many people each size seats, and how much clearance to leave around the flame.

If you are still deciding between a fire table, a fire bowl and an in-ground pit, start with our fire pit buying guide. This article goes deeper on fire tables only.

Fire pit table height: the four standard bands

Furniture makers sort fire tables by the seat they are built for, not by a single industry standard. Patio Resort Lifestyles, the maker of the fire tables we carry, labels each model on its own site as Chat, Counter or Bar, and lists a separate dining-height model. The numbers below combine those labels with general furniture height guides from Sebring Design Build and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Height type Typical table height Typical seat height Pairs with Example we sell
Chat About 24 to 25 in Varies by lounge chair Club chairs, swivels, sofas Venice 52″ Round, 25″ H
Dining 28 to 30 in 17 to 19 in Dining chairs Windsor 84″ x 44″, 28″ H
Counter About 34 to 37 in (some fire tables run to 38 in) About 23 to 28 in Counter stools Venice 52″ Round Counter, 38″ H
Bar About 40 to 43 in About 28 to 32 in Bar stools Venice 52″ Round Bar, 41″ H

Heights for the example tables come from Patio Resorts’ own product pages for the Venice 52″ chat, Venice 52″ counter, Venice 52″ bar and Windsor 84″ x 44″ dining tables. Some of our own product pages still show placeholder dimensions for these tables, so where they differ, the maker’s figures above take priority. Call us to confirm before you order.

Chat height: for lounge seating and conversation

Chat height is the classic fire table. The top sits low, close to the arm height of deep seating, so you can rest a drink and still feel the heat while leaning back. Patio Resorts lists the Venice 52″ Round Fire Table at 25″ high and says it seats 4 chairs. The Paris 49″ Square Fire Table is listed by the maker at 24″ high and described as accommodating up to 4 club chairs or club swivels. The Bermuda 48″ Round Fire Table and Rome 48″ Round Granite Fire Table are also chat height at 25″.

Choose chat height if your patio is built around a sofa or club chairs. Lounge seat heights vary, so measure your chairs’ seat and arm height and compare them with the table before ordering.

Dining height fire pit table: fire and dinner at one table

A dining height fire pit table sits at standard table height so you can eat around the flame. Sebring Design Build puts standard dining tables at 28 to 30 inches with chair seats around 17 to 19 inches, and recommends about 12 inches between seat and tabletop for comfort plus 26 to 30 inches center to center per chair. The Windsor 84″ x 44″ Rectangle Dining Fire Table is listed by Patio Resorts at 28″ high, and the maker’s product name describes twin fire pits.

Two practical points for dining fire tables. First, the burner, valve and tank storage all live under the top, so sit at a display model or check the manual for knee room before you commit. Second, plates, glasses and napkins end up close to the flame, so keep the burner cover handy and turn the fire off while food is being passed.

Counter height fire table: a middle ground for stools

A counter height fire table puts guests a little above lounge level without the climb of a bar stool. Bed Bath and Beyond pairs 35 to 37 inch counters with stools that have 23 to 28 inch seats. The Venice 52″ Round Counter Fire Table is listed by Patio Resorts at 38″ high and seats 4 stools. That is about an inch taller than a typical kitchen counter, so pick counter stools toward the taller end of that range, and test that you have roughly 10 to 12 inches between seat and tabletop.

Bar height fire table: for standing and tall stools

A bar height fire table suits standing, mingling crowds and views over a railing. Bar tables typically run 40 to 43 inches with stool seats of about 28 to 32 inches. The Venice 52″ Round Bar Fire Table is listed by Patio Resorts at 41″ high and seats 4 stools. Choose stools with footrests, and keep in mind that the flame sits close to seated chest height on a bar table.

Fire table size for seating

When the maker gives a seat count, use it. Where it does not, these rules of thumb help:

  • Chat tables 48″ to 52″: Patio Resorts rates its Venice 52″ chat table and Paris 49″ square table for 4 chairs.
  • Counter and bar rounds: 4 stools on a 52″ round per the maker. Bed Bath and Beyond suggests 6 to 10 inches between stools.
  • Dining rectangles: use about 26 to 30 inches of table edge per diner. Patio Resorts does not publish a seat count for the Windsor 84″ x 44″, so check with us before planning a full table.

Burner size also matters for comfort. See our guide to fire pit burner size for how burner diameter and BTU relate to table size. Several of our Patio Resorts listings state a 56,000 BTU burner, but the maker’s site does not publish BTU figures, so confirm output on the product manual.

Fire table clearance: how much space to leave

Clearance rules come from the specific appliance manual, and they differ between brands. As one example, EcoSmart Fire’s clearance page for gas fire tables calls for:

  • At least 24 inches between the flame and fixed furniture such as lounges.
  • At least 78.7 inches between the flame and movable items overhead, such as curtains or tree branches.
  • At least 72 inches from the top of the burner to any overhang.
  • Measurements taken from the edge of the flame, not the center of the table.

Treat these as an illustration, not a rule for every table. Your fire table’s manual and local fire and gas codes are the final word, and some jurisdictions restrict fire features under covered patios or on certain decks. Use gas fire tables outdoors only, keep the lid off while burning, and never move the table while it is lit. Fuel type affects installation too, which we cover in propane vs natural gas fire pits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard fire pit table height?

There is no single standard. Chat fire tables are about 24 to 25 inches tall, dining height runs about 28 to 30 inches, counter about 34 to 38 inches, and bar about 40 to 43 inches. Check the exact figure on the product spec sheet.

How tall is a bar height fire table?

Usually 40 to 43 inches. The Venice 52″ Round Bar Fire Table is listed by Patio Resorts at 41 inches and pairs with bar stools that have roughly 28 to 32 inch seats.

Can you eat at a dining height fire pit table?

Yes, that is what dining height is for. Leave about 12 inches between chair seat and tabletop, allow 26 to 30 inches per diner, and turn the flame off when passing food across the table.

How much clearance does a fire table need?

It depends on the model. One manufacturer, EcoSmart Fire, specifies at least 24 inches to fixed furniture and 72 inches from burner top to any overhang. Always follow your own table’s manual and local codes.
