If you are asking what size fireplace screen do I need, the short answer is: one that covers the whole opening with room to spare. Measure the width and height of the firebox opening, then pick a flat screen that overlaps it by at least an inch, or a folding 3 panel screen that is about 10 to 12 inches wider and at least an inch taller than the opening. Those numbers come from the Mantels Direct fireplace screen buying guide, and the rest of this page shows how to measure, how to choose between styles, and which screens we carry fit common openings.
What size fireplace screen do I need, and why?
The U.S. Fire Administration tells homeowners to keep a glass or metal screen in front of your fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out. A screen that is narrower or shorter than the opening leaves gaps at the sides or top where a popping log can throw an ember onto the rug.
A screen is an extra layer, not a substitute for the basics. It does not replace a proper hearth or the clearances your fireplace maker and local code require. USFA also says to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from the fireplace, never burn paper, put the fire out before you sleep or leave, have the chimney inspected and cleaned every year, and store ashes in a lidded metal container outside at least 10 feet from the house.
How to measure for a fireplace screen
- Opening width. Measure straight across the firebox opening at its widest point, edge of brick to edge of brick.
- Opening height. Measure from the hearth floor to the highest point of the opening. For an arched opening, measure at the peak.
- Hearth depth. Measure from the face of the fireplace to the front edge of the hearth. The screen feet have to sit fully on that surface, not half on the carpet.
- Hearth width. Measure side to side. A tri fold screen with angled wings needs this space.
- Obstacles. Note a raised hearth lip, a grate that extends forward, or existing glass doors.
Write the numbers as width by height (for example, 36 x 28), the way most product titles list screens.
Fireplace screen size guide: the sizing rules
The Mantels Direct guide gives two simple rules:
- Flat (single panel) screens should overlap the opening by 1 inch.
- Folding screens should be 1 inch taller than the opening and 10 to 12 inches wider, so the side panels can angle back and the screen stands on its own.
The guide also notes its product sizing is written with gas fireplaces in mind. For a wood fire, we would lean toward more overlap rather than less. By our math, if you apply the 1 inch overlap on each side, a 36 x 28 opening calls for a flat screen at least 38 inches wide and 29 inches tall, and a folding screen about 46 to 48 inches wide and 29 inches or taller.
Flat vs 3 panel fireplace screen
A flat screen is one panel on small feet. It takes up little hearth and is easy to lift aside, but it must be wider than the opening on its own, so very wide fireplaces run out of options.
A 3 panel (tri fold) screen has a center panel plus two hinged wings. You can open the wings wider or narrower to fit the opening, which is why the folding rule allows extra width. The tradeoff is footprint: the angled wings sit forward of the fireplace face, so you need more hearth depth and width. Before ordering, lay painter’s tape on the hearth in the shape of the screen to confirm the feet land on the hearth.
Fireplace screen with doors
A screen with doors lets you add a log or use a poker without moving the whole screen, which is handy if you burn wood often.
Do not confuse these with glass fireplace doors, which mount to the fireplace itself and are sized to the exact opening. USFA lists glass and metal screens as both acceptable for stopping sparks. Glass can get very hot, so with small children, a freestanding screen in front still makes sense.
Sizes we carry, built from our listings
The table below uses the dimensions on our product pages. The “fits openings up to” column is our math using the overlap rules above, so treat it as a starting point and check your own measurements.
| Screen | Style | Listed size (W x D x H, inches) | Fits openings up to (our math) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Benzara Hype single panel, black and silver | Flat, diamond mesh | 41 x 8 x 31.75 | 39 x 30 | $151.37 |
| Benzara classic diamond, black | Flat | 41.5 x 8.9 x 32.1 | 39 x 31 | $384.75 |
| Benzara gold overlapping circles | Flat | 41.1 x 9.25 x 31.1 | 39 x 30 | $380.50 |
| Benzara 2 door diamond mesh, matte black | Flat with 2 doors | 40 x 10.25 x 30.5 | 38 x 29.5 | $341.36 |
| Benzara 3 panel, 2 door, black copper | 3 panel with 2 doors | 41 x 9.75 x 31.75 | 39 x 30.5 (narrow wings, so we used the flat rule) | $285.67 |
| Benzara 49 inch 3 panel, gold | Tri fold | 48.5 x 0.75 x 30.25 | 36.5 to 38.5 x 29 | $215.74 |
| Benzara tri fold with doors and 4 piece tool set | Tri fold with 2 doors | 50.5 x 5.5 x 32 | 38.5 to 40.5 x 31 | $429.78 |
| Benzara 57 inch 3 panel scrolled mesh | Tri fold | 56.75 x 1.75 x 32.5 | 44.5 to 46.5 x 31.5 | $316.97 |
Tri fold depth figures are folded measurements, so plan for more hearth space once the wings open.
Price check: we compared each Benzara screen above with benzara.com when writing this, and the maker listed the same price for every one. Compare shipping before you buy: we ship free freight on orders of $999 or more and charge $200 flat below that, so on a single screen the maker may cost less once shipping is added. You can browse every Benzara model on our Benzara brand page.
Wider openings
For openings wider than about 46 inches, look at our Meyda screens, which give the width and height in each title, for example the Meyda 50 x 33 Prime arched screen with operable door at $2,800. Meyda listings carry little detail beyond the size, and we could not check Meyda’s own pricing, so call us to confirm size, finish and price before ordering.
Screens for gas, outdoor and electric fireplaces
Screens matter most for open wood fires. Several of the Benzara listings above say they suit indoor and outdoor fireplaces (the Hype model says covered outdoor), so if you are planning a patio unit, our outdoor gas fireplace guide covers the bigger choices first. If you are thinking about converting an old wood firebox instead, read our guide to an electric fireplace insert for an existing fireplace before you buy a screen.
Frequently asked questions
What size fireplace screen do I need for a 36 inch opening?
Following the Mantels Direct rules, a flat screen should be at least 37 to 38 inches wide, and a folding screen about 46 to 48 inches wide, in both cases at least an inch taller than the opening.
How to measure for a fireplace screen with an arched opening?
Measure the widest point of the opening and the height at the top of the arch. Size the screen to those two numbers, then confirm the hearth depth for the feet.
Is a flat or 3 panel fireplace screen safer?
Either works if it covers the full opening with overlap and sits stably on the hearth. A 3 panel screen wraps the sides better but needs more hearth space.
Does a fireplace screen with doors leak sparks?
The doors on our listed models close over mesh; one listing says its doors use magnets to stay shut. Keep the doors closed whenever the fire is burning and you are not tending it.
The bottom line
Measure width, height and hearth depth, then add overlap: about an inch for a flat screen, 10 to 12 inches of width for a folding one. Questions about fit?
