Hot Tub Cover Replacement: Measure, Taper, Fit

A hot tub cover replacement is mostly a measuring job. If the new cover is even an inch short, heat escapes and rain gets in; if the taper is wrong for your climate, you either lug around more foam than you need or pay for it in heating. This guide walks through how to measure, how to read thickness and foam density, how to tell when your old cover is done, and which cover styles fit which spas.

If you are still choosing or installing a tub, start with our guides to a hot tub foundation and 110V vs 240V hot tubs. This article assumes the spa is in place and the cover is what needs attention.

When a hot tub cover replacement makes sense

There is no fixed expiry date. Caldera Spas says it is difficult to say how long a cover will last because it depends on the conditions it faces, and suggests checking that the cover meets the spa edge all the way around and has no tears in the outer skin. Hot Spring lists the signs that usually mean it is time to find a replacement cover:

  • The cover sags in the center instead of lying flat.
  • The vinyl has tears or cracks.
  • The cover feels noticeably heavier, which points to water getting past the vapor barrier into the foam.
  • It smells musty or moldy.

How to measure a hot tub cover

The cover maker MySpaCover publishes a step-by-step hot tub cover measuring guide. The key points:

  1. Measure the spa, not a tired cover. Only use the old cover if it has not warped or taken on water. When in doubt, measure the tub. Leslie’s gives the same advice in its cover buyer’s guide.
  2. Find the right edge. On a standard cabinet, measure across the widest points of the acrylic lip. If your cabinet has a top rail, measure the rail. For an in-ground spa, measure where the cover will actually rest.
  3. Round up. Round to the next half inch or inch. A slightly large cover still seals; a small one leaks heat.
  4. Measure the corner radius. Set a carpenter’s square (or a sheet of letter paper) into the corner and measure from the corner point to where the curve starts.
  5. Pick the fold. Most covers fold along the longer side. Plan the fold so the cover opens away from the control panel and clears walls, steps and fences.
  6. Note skirt and strap length. The guide lists 4 in as a standard skirt and 9 in as a standard strap length, measured down from the bottom of the cover.

Model-specific covers skip most of the guesswork

If you own a Canadian Spa Company tub, the replacement covers we list are named by spa model and print their size. For example, the OEM Spa Cover for the Muskoka is listed at 74 in x 74 in, matching the 74 x 74 in outer dimensions on the Canadian Spa Muskoka 5-Person hot tub listing. The OEM Spa Cover for the Yukon is listed at 84 in x 40 in with a 4 in radius. You can browse the full range on the Canadian Spa Company brand page. Still measure your lip before ordering.

Hot tub cover thickness: what a 4 to 2 in or 5 to 3 in taper means

Cover thickness is described as a taper. Leslie’s explains that the larger number is the thickness along the fold (the center), and the smaller number is the outer edge.

Leslie’s lists tapers of 4 to 2 in on its economy through deluxe covers, 5 to 3 in on its energy saver model and 6 to 4 in on its top models. It also says higher density foam gives better insulation and durability, with its range running from 1.0 lb to 2.0 lb foam. In short: a thicker taper and denser foam add insulation and stiffness, and also add weight.

Here is what our Canadian Spa Company replacement cover listings print:

Cover (by spa model) Listed size Taper Foam Locking straps
Muskoka 74 x 74 in 3 to 2 in EPS (density not listed) 4
Saskatoon 63 x 63 in, 4 in radius 3 to 2 in EPS (density not listed) 4
Yukon 84 x 40 in, 4 in radius 5 to 3 in 1.5 lb density EPS 8
Toronto/Edmonton 84 x 84 in, 4 in radius 5 to 3 in 1.5 lb density EPS 8
St Lawrence 16ft swim spa 197 x 90 in, 4 in radius 5 to 3 in 1.5 lb density EPS 8

These listings also describe a 6 mil heat sealed polyethylene vapor barrier around the foam, a 5 in continuous skirt, a full-length steam seal along the fold and a 2 year pro-rated warranty.

Spa cover styles compared

Style Example from our store Best for Keep in mind
Folding hard cover OEM Spa Cover, Toronto/Edmonton Most hot tubs, cold climates, lockable child protection Heavier, a lifter helps
Rolling cover Rolling Spa Cover, 84 inch spa Square spas where lifting is a problem Listed as XPE with a fiberglass support tube and domed top; no foam taper
Brand-specific cover Outdoor cover for Empava SPA3527 Empava SPA3527, SPA3528 or SPA3550 owners Confirm specs with us before ordering
Weather guard (cap) 8 ft Hot Tub Cover Weather Guard Protecting an existing cover from UV, sap, ice and snow Not an insulating or safety cover

The Weather Guard is a woven polyethylene cap with a 12 in elastic skirt, made in 7 ft and 8 ft sizes, and its listing says to remove it before opening or closing the hard cover underneath.

Hot tub cover lifter: save your back and your new cover

Hot Spring recommends strongly considering a cover lifter so the cover stays raised and off the ground while you soak. The main thing to check is clearance behind the spa:

  • Top Mount Cover Lifter: listed for spas up to 96 in wide, needs about 10 in of clearance behind the spa and allows a corner radius up to 12 in.
  • Cradle Mount Cover Lifter: sits on a base plate under the tub, so nothing mounts to the cabinet. It needs 26 in of clearance and is not recommended for covers over 5 ft in length.

Follow the lifter’s installation instructions, and check that it is rated for your cover’s size, since a 5 to 3 in cover is heavier than a 3 to 2 in one.

How to make a new spa cover last

MySpaCover’s care tips are practical: clean it with a gentle cleaner and soft cloth (no harsh chemicals), shield it from UV and weather, fasten the straps so wind cannot lift it, keep heavy objects off it, and inspect it regularly for tears or water absorption. Caldera adds that keeping proper water chemistry and gently clearing leaves, snow and ice also help.

Frequently asked questions

How long do hot tub covers last?

It depends on climate, foam quality and care. MySpaCover states that a well-maintained spa cover can last 3 to 7 years on average, while Caldera Spas declines to give a figure because conditions vary so much. Replace it when it sags, cracks or gets waterlogged.

Should I measure the old cover or the hot tub?

Measure the hot tub, at the widest points of the acrylic lip or top rail. An old cover may have shrunk, warped or stretched. Round up to the next half inch.

Is a 5 to 3 in taper better than 4 to 2 in?

A thicker taper gives more insulation and better water runoff, which helps in cold climates. The trade-off is weight, so pairing a thicker cover with a cover lifter is common.

Can a spa cover cap replace a hard cover?

No. A weather guard like our 7 ft or 8 ft Weather Guard is a protective cap over your insulated cover. Its listing says it is not a safety cover or an insulating cover.
