How Long Do Patio Heaters Last? Lifespan and Care

How long do patio heaters last? There is no single number, because a patio heater is a set of parts that wear at different rates. Electric infrared heaters are the easiest to put a figure on: the heating elements in heaters we sell are rated for 5,000 to 10,000 hours of use, depending on the model. Gas heaters last as long as their frame and finish hold up, provided you replace the small wear parts (hose, regulator, igniter, thermocouple) as they age. Exposure to rain and salt air, how you store the heater, and how often you clean it decide where in that range yours lands.

If your heater will not light right now, start with our patio heater troubleshooting guide instead.

How long do patio heaters last? Start with the parts that wear

The shell (post, base, tank housing, mounting bracket) can last many seasons with care. These parts usually fail first.

  • Hose and regulator (propane units): rubber hoses crack and abrade, and regulators can fail. The AZ Patio Heaters care guide says to inspect the hose before use, replace it if there is evidence of abrasion or wear, and check the entire hose at least once a year (AZ Patio Heaters user care guide).
  • Igniter and thermocouple: small parts that sit close to heat and weather; the same guide lists both as replaceable.
  • Pilot and venturi tubes: debris and soot build up here. The guide calls for cleaning the pilot feed tube every year.
  • Emitter screen and glass tube: on flame tube heaters like the RADtec Tower Flame, the glass tube, flame screen and mesh guards are listed as separate parts, so they can be serviced individually.
  • Reflector: the top reflector takes heat and weather and can discolor or dent. Infratech notes it supplies replacement end reflectors under its maintenance program (Infratech warranty page), which tells you reflectors are treated as a wear item.
  • Electric element: the quartz, golden tube or carbon fiber element is the main wear part in an electric heater, and manufacturers rate it in hours.

Patio heater lifespan: gas vs electric

Propane and natural gas heaters

Gas heaters have no single rated life. They keep working as long as the burner, valve and frame are sound, and you swap the hose, regulator, igniter or thermocouple when they fail. Home Depot notes that natural gas patio heaters are easier to maintain and have lower long term ownership costs than electric versions (Home Depot patio heater guide). Our propane vs natural gas patio heater guide covers the fuel choice.

Electric infrared heaters

The element rating is the best guide to service life. Our listings give these figures:

  • RADtec Torrid Series 77-inch: golden tube elements rated for 7,000 to 10,000 hours.
  • RADtec Genesis Series: golden tube element rated for 5,000 to 8,000 hours.
  • Lynx electric heaters: quartz element rated for up to 5,000 hours.

To put hours in context: 5,000 hours at four hours a night is 1,250 nights of use. A restaurant heater that runs every service will reach its rating far sooner than a home heater. A burned out element does not always mean a new heater; check your manual for replacement elements.

Rain, coastal air and the finish

Water and salt shorten life more than hours of use. Compare the water resistance rating before you buy, and match it to where the heater will live:

  • IPX5: RADtec Real Flame, Tower Flame and Pyramid gas heaters, rated to withstand moderate rain.
  • IP54: RADtec Design Series, listed for indoor and covered outdoor use.
  • IP65: RADtec Genesis Series, listed for exposed outdoor installation.
  • IP67: RADtec Torrid Series, listed for sheltered and unsheltered installations with an anodized aluminum body described as corrosion resistant.

Finish matters too. The AZ care guide recommends cleaning powder coated surfaces with a soft damp cloth and mild cleanser, then applying automotive paste wax to prevent oxidation. For stainless steel it recommends a stainless steel cleaner and polisher. Near the ocean, wipe salt off more often than you would inland, and favor a covered spot or a heater with a high IP rating and a corrosion resistant body.

Storage and covers

A fitted cover keeps water, pollen and insects out of the burner and controls; let the heater cool fully first. For off season storage of gas equipment, see the shutdown and restart steps in our gas fire pit winterizing guide.

Patio heater maintenance schedule

When Gas heater Electric heater
Before each use Look over the hose for abrasion or wear; keep connections and the cylinder valve outlet clean Check the cord, plug and mounting for damage
After use Let it cool, then cover it Let it cool, then wipe the housing
Monthly in season Wipe the finish; more often near salt water Wipe the housing and reflector face
Yearly Check the entire hose, soapy water leak test, clean the pilot feed tube Inspect the element and wiring; have a pro check the circuit if it trips
As needed Replace hose, regulator, igniter or thermocouple Replace the element when output drops or it fails

The gas items come from the AZ Patio Heaters care guide. The monthly wipe is our own suggestion, not a manufacturer interval. Gas leak checks and electrical work carry real risk: a licensed gas fitter or electrician and your local code have the final word.

Warranty and rated life: heaters we sell

Most of our listings do not state a warranty, so ask us for manufacturer terms before you buy.

Prices are as listed at the time of writing. For comparison, Infratech offers a three-year warranty on heaters registered online (Infratech). See the full range on our RADtec brand page.

Repair or replace?

Repair when the frame, burner and finish are sound and the fault is a wear part: a hose, regulator, igniter, thermocouple or electric element.

Replace when rust has eaten through the post, base or burner, the housing is structurally damaged, a gas valve is corroded, or parts are no longer available. If a freestanding propane unit keeps getting soaked, a wall mounted electric heater with a high IP rating may fit better. Our patio heater buying guide walks through the options.

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical patio heater lifespan?

No reliable single figure exists. Electric element ratings in our listings run from up to 5,000 hours (Lynx quartz) to 7,000 to 10,000 hours (RADtec Torrid golden tube). Gas heaters last as long as the frame and burner, with wear parts replaced along the way.

Does patio heater maintenance really extend its life?

Yes. Yearly hose checks, leak tests and cleaning, plus waxing powder coat or polishing stainless steel, address the most common failure points listed in manufacturer care guides.

Do electric patio heaters last longer than gas?

They have fewer wear parts and carry hour ratings, but a well kept gas heater can serve many seasons with part swaps. Care and exposure matter more than fuel type.
