How Much Does a Sauna Cost? Prices and Install

How much does a sauna cost? In our own listings, a 1 to 2 person indoor infrared sauna runs from about $1,240 to $5,080, a 3 to 4 person infrared cabin from about $3,090 to $6,400, an indoor traditional cabin with an electric stove from about $3,170 to $5,040, and a Dundalk LeisureCraft outdoor barrel or cabin from about $5,555 to $10,130 before you add a heater. Then add installation: a plug-in infrared sauna may need little more than a dedicated outlet, while a traditional heater usually means a new 240V circuit, and an outdoor sauna needs a level base. Below: price, installation, accessories and running cost.

Infrared sauna price

Infrared saunas are usually the cheapest way in. They heat with carbon panels instead of a rock stove and run on household current in smaller sizes. The tradeoff is a lower air temperature: the Viti lists a maximum of 151 F. Our infrared vs traditional sauna guide compares the experience in detail.

Outdoor sauna cost

Outdoor saunas cost more because they are built for weather and hold more people. The Harmony barrel is $5,555.16 with no heater and $6,606.18 with the Harvia KIP 9 kW heater option. The CT Palmer 6-person cabin is $7,177 without a heater and $8,607 with a Harvia KIP 8 kW heater. The Tranquility barrel offers wood-burning stoves instead of electric. Sauna installation cost

HomeAdvisor’s sauna installation cost guide puts total home sauna installation at $2,500 to $7,000, with most homeowners spending around $3,100. It lists labor at 30 to 50 percent of the total and electricians at $50 to $100 per hour.

Electrical: 120V plug-in vs 240V circuit

Small infrared saunas plug into a 120V outlet, but it should be a dedicated one, not shared with other loads, and never an extension cord. HomeAdvisor’s outlet installation guide lists $138 to $320 for a professionally installed outlet, more if a new circuit has to be run. Traditional electric heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the heater. HomeAdvisor does not price a sauna circuit separately; for a similar 240V job, its hot tub installation guide lists $600 to $2,200 for wiring and $400 to $1,800 for a subpanel if your panel is full. Amps, wire size and breaker details are in our home sauna electrical requirements guide. A licensed electrician and your local code have the final word.

Foundation and ventilation

Outdoor saunas need a solid, level base. HomeAdvisor lists a concrete slab at about $6 per square foot, so an 8 by 8 foot pad (64 square feet) is roughly $384 before any site prep. Indoor saunas may need ventilation: HomeAdvisor lists $250 to $600 for a single fan and $2,000 to $4,000 for a ducted system. It also notes that any work touching your electrical or plumbing usually means a permit and inspection.

Delivery

Orders of $999 or more ship free freight in the United States, so every sauna in the table ships free. Large kits can need extra planning: the Palmer listing says it is delivered by appointment, needs an extended forklift to unload, and that moving it to its final spot is the customer’s job.

Accessories and extras

Traditional saunas need a few extras. The Dundalk Starter accessory package is $98 for a bucket and ladle, a cedar thermometer and eucalyptus essence. The Deluxe package is $325 and the Supreme is $443. Barrel saunas also offer roof options, and an electric sauna light is $129. Plan $100 to $500 for the basics.

Cost to run a sauna

Running cost is simple math: heater kW times hours of use times your electric rate. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A lists the average U.S. residential price at 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026. Use the rate on your bill.

  • Infrared, 1.5 kW for 1 hour (Hemlock two-person): 1.5 x 1 x $0.1831 = about $0.27 per session, or about $3.57 a month at three sessions a week.
  • Traditional, 4.5 kW for 1.5 hours (including heat-up): 4.5 x 1.5 x $0.1831 = about $1.24 per session, or about $16 a month at three sessions a week.
  • Outdoor, 8 kW for 1.5 hours (Harvia KIP 8 kW): 8 x 1.5 x $0.1831 = about $2.20 per session, or about $29 a month at three sessions a week.

These figures assume the heater draws full power the whole time. Thermostats cycle the heater once the room reaches temperature, so treat them as a ceiling. A wood stove has no electric cost but needs firewood.

A sample home sauna cost budget

  • Plug-in infrared: Hemlock two-person at $1,561.99, plus a dedicated outlet at $138 to $320, comes to about $1,700 to $1,880 before any new circuit.
  • Outdoor electric: Harmony with the Harvia 9 kW heater at $6,606.18, plus wiring at $600 to $2,200 and a pad at roughly $384, comes to about $7,600 to $9,200.

Safety and health

Follow the time and temperature limits in your manual, drink water, get out if you feel dizzy, and avoid alcohol before a session. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, low or high blood pressure, or any other health concern, check with your doctor before using a sauna.
