Here is how to move a wine fridge without hurting it: empty it, unplug it a day early, tape the shelves and door, and keep it upright the whole way. Every wine fridge manual we opened says to move the unit upright, and Empava warns that any other position can damage the compressor.
How to move a wine fridge: the quick checklist
- Take out every bottle and pack the wine separately.
- Unplug the day before so it can warm up, drain and dry.
- Tape down or remove shelves, then tape the door and wrap the cabinet.
- Screw the leveling feet up toward the base.
- Move it upright on an appliance dolly with a helper, and strap it upright in the vehicle.
- Level it, let it stand before plugging in, and let it cool before loading.
Step 1: Empty it and pack the wine
“Remove all bottles” is the first moving step in the Empava WC03S manual, and the Thor Kitchen TWC24US manual warns that moving the cabinet loaded with wine can distort the body. Pack bottles in sturdy boxes with dividers and ride them in the car rather than a hot trailer.
Step 2: Unplug, defrost and dry
GE Appliances suggests turning compact refrigerators off a day ahead so they can drain. Then:
- Wipe the interior dry. Empava’s manual says to dry the inside and leave the door open when the unit is taken out of service, and to check and clean the water drain.
- Empty the drain pan if your model has one. Marvel’s guide notes a defrost drain pan under the compressor and says to sponge out any water.
Step 3: Secure shelves and tape the door
The Empava and Thor manuals both say to securely tape down all loose items inside and to tape the door shut. Empava also allows packing removable parts separately. A few cautions from us:
- Use painter’s tape or stretch wrap, not duct tape, which can leave residue on stainless steel.
- Keep tape off the door gasket; tape across the outside of the door and cabinet.
For glass doors, the Thor manual says to protect the outside of the appliance with a blanket. Put cardboard over the glass, then a moving blanket, then stretch wrap.
Can you lay a wine fridge down?
The manuals we read say no. Empava states the appliance must be moved upright and that “all other positions can cause damage to the compressor.” Thor says to keep it secure in the upright position during transport, and GE says compact models should stay upright at all times and built in models must be upright under all circumstances.
If a brief tilt is unavoidable, such as clearing a low doorway, Whirlpool’s moving guide says never to lay a refrigerator on its front or back, only its left or right side. Treat that as a last resort.
Wait before plugging in a wine fridge after the move
Our wine fridge installation guide covers settle time in detail. In short, Marvel says a unit shipped or stored other than upright should stand at least 24 hours before plugging in so oil returns to the compressor, while Empava says 4 to 6 hours upright, then about 24 hours to stabilize.
Lifting and the appliance dolly
Marvel’s manual carries an excessive weight warning and says to use two or more people. Other rules from the sources we read:
- Lift from the base. Empava says never to use the door to move the unit because it damages the hinges.
- Screw the leveling feet up so they do not snap off, a step in both the Empava and Thor manuals.
- Dolly from the side. GE says damage could occur if a refrigerator is trucked from the front or rear, and Whirlpool says never to tip it forward onto the dolly.
- Strap it on. Whirlpool says to strap the unit tightly to the hand truck and tip back no more than 45 degrees. Keep the strap over the blanket, not across the glass or handle.
What our wine fridges weigh
Weights below are as stated on our product pages; “net” is the bare unit and “shipping” includes packaging.

| Empava 70 Inch Tall WC07S | 170 | Not listed | Not listed | $2,099.99 |
A 15 inch unit is a two person job; a tall cabinet near 190 pounds calls for a rated appliance dolly and a third person on stairs. See more models on our Empava brand page.
How to transport a wine cooler in a vehicle
- Use a van or truck tall enough to keep it standing. Whirlpool recommends strapping a refrigerator upright against the side of a moving truck or other tall truck.
- Strap it to tie points at two heights so it cannot tip or slide.
- Keep the blanket on and stack nothing on top.
Moving a built in wine fridge
- Remove the front grille or kick plate if needed. Marvel’s guide shows the grille held by screws and says not to obstruct it in use.
- Look for an anti tip bracket. A U-Line service manual for a 24 inch wine refrigerator includes one secured to the adjoining surface. Release it before pulling the unit and reinstall it at the new location.
- Pull straight out slowly over cardboard. Empava warns to make sure the power cord is not caught under the unit or damaged.
If the new spot needs a new outlet or circuit, hire a licensed electrician; local code has the final word.
After the move: level, settle, cool, then load
- Inspect for damage before discarding packaging.
- Level it side to side and front to back, as Marvel’s guide describes, tilting with a helper to reach the legs.
- Let it stand upright for the time your manual gives, then plug into a dedicated, grounded outlet. Empava says not to use a multi socket.
- Let it stabilize about 24 hours before loading, per Empava; Marvel gives the same 24 hours after long term storage.
- Check the door seal. Empava’s troubleshooting lists a defective door seal and an uneven floor as causes of poor cooling.

Frequently asked questions
Can you lay a wine fridge down to move it?
The manuals we read say keep it upright; Empava warns other positions can damage the compressor. If you must tilt it briefly, use the left or right side, never the front or back.
How long should you wait before plugging in a wine fridge?
Follow your manual. Empava says 4 to 6 hours upright; Marvel says at least 24 hours if it was not kept upright. When in doubt, wait 24 hours.
Can I move a wine fridge with bottles inside?
No. The manuals say to remove all bottles first, and Thor warns a loaded cabinet can distort.
