Loveseat vs Sofa: Sizes, Seating and Which to Buy

The short answer to loveseat vs sofa: a loveseat is built for two people and a sofa is built for three or more. Merriam-Webster defines a love seat as “a double chair, sofa, or settee for two persons.” What the label does not tell you is the actual width, and that is where most buying mistakes happen. Below we compare real loveseats and sofas from our catalog by their listed dimensions, so you can see how much the sizes vary and how to choose for your room.

Loveseat vs sofa: the real difference

The difference is seat count, not a fixed measurement. A loveseat is sold as two-person seating. A sofa is sold as three-person seating or more, and modular sofas can grow well past that. Because each manufacturer sets its own proportions, a wide loveseat from one brand can be wider than a compact sofa from another.

That overlap shows up in our own listings. The HomeRoots 76″ Pink Corduroy Loveseat measures 75.5 inches wide, while the Rove Concepts Louis Outdoor Sofa is 78 inches wide. Only 2.5 inches separate a piece called a loveseat from a piece called a sofa. Always shop by the tape measure, not the product name.

Loveseat dimensions vs sofa dimensions in our catalog

We do not quote an “industry standard” loveseat size, because the listings below show there is not a single one. These are stated widths and depths from product pages, with prices at the time of writing.

Listing Type Width Depth Price
Benzara Ohio Loveseat Settee Loveseat (settee) 44.25 in 29.75 in $951.84
Rove Concepts Louis Outdoor Loveseat Loveseat 54.3 in 33.9 in $1,399
Benzara Gaia set, loveseat Loveseat 55 in 33 in Sold as a set
HomeRoots 64″ Faux Leather Loveseat With Storage Loveseat 63.8 in 31.9 in $999.99
HomeRoots 76″ Pink Corduroy Loveseat Loveseat 75.5 in 37.5 in $409.99
Rove Concepts Arya Outdoor Modular Loveseat Loveseat 79 in 36.25 in $2,743
Rove Concepts Kyoto Loveseat Loveseat (modular) 93.3 in 33.5 in $2,624
Benzara Gaia set, sofa Sofa 78 in 33 in $1,414.44 for both pieces
Rove Concepts Louis Outdoor Sofa Sofa 78 in 32 in $1,959
HomeRoots 79″ Faux Leather Modular Sofa And Storage Sofa 79.2 in 33.5 in $1,339.99
Benzara Josy reclining set, sofa Sofa 88 in 39 in Sold as a set

Across these listings, loveseats run from 44.25 to 93.3 inches wide and sofas from 78 to 88 inches. The Kyoto is the outlier: per Rove Concepts, its arm modules include an integrated extended table, which adds width without adding a third seat. Its listed seat width is 77.9 inches.

What is a standard loveseat size?

There is no single standard. Most of the loveseats above fall between about 54 and 80 inches wide, and depth runs from 29.75 to 37.5 inches. A compact loveseat settee like the Ohio is closer to an oversized armchair, while modular pieces can be longer than many sofas.

How many people fit on a loveseat?

Plan on two. That is how loveseats are sold, and it is what the listings promise. The HomeRoots 64″ storage loveseat, for example, states it “seats up to 2 comfortably,” while its 79-inch matching sofa lists a 3-seat capacity. A third person may squeeze onto a wide loveseat for a short movie, but it will not be comfortable for daily use.

Seat count also depends on arm width. Two pieces with the same overall width can have very different usable seats if one has thick, padded arms. When a listing gives a seat width, as the Kyoto does, use that number rather than the overall width to judge real sitting room.

Loveseat vs settee: is there a difference?

The terms overlap. Merriam-Webster defines a settee as “a long seat with a back” and also “a medium-sized sofa with arms and a back.” In practice, retailers often use “settee” for a smaller, more upright, tailored piece with exposed legs, which is why the Benzara Ohio is listed as a “Loveseat Settee.” If you want a lighter-looking two-seater for an entry, bedroom or reading corner, settee styles are worth a look. If you want to lounge, a deeper loveseat is usually the better fit.

How to choose for your room

Rather than relying on general rules, measure your own space before you buy:

  1. Measure the wall or zone. Note the full width available, then subtract space for side tables, outlets, vents and any door swing.
  2. Tape the footprint on the floor. Use painter’s tape to mark the listed width and depth. Walk around it for a day to see whether paths still feel open.
  3. Check depth separately. Deep seats are great for lounging but eat into a small room. Our sofa depth guide explains how to compare overall depth and seat depth.
  4. Measure the delivery path. Doorways, hallway turns and stairwells stop more deliveries than room size does. See will a couch fit through my door for the steps.
  5. Count daily users, not party guests. If two people sit there every night, a loveseat works. If three or more do, look at a sofa.

Recliners need extra room. The Benzara Josy loveseat in the reclining set lists a 77-inch width and a depth of 39 inches that extends to 65 inches when reclined, so measure for the open position, not just the closed one.

Pairing a sofa and a loveseat

A sofa plus a loveseat is a common layout for family rooms because it seats five without a sectional’s fixed corner. You can place them facing each other for conversation, or in an L shape around a coffee table or TV. Buying a matched set keeps fabric, arm style and height consistent.

Two sets in our catalog show the range. The Benzara Gaia 2-piece set pairs a 78-inch sofa with a 55-inch loveseat at $1,414.44. The Benzara Josy 2-piece reclining set in light gray fabric pairs an 88-inch sofa with a 77-inch loveseat at $2,237.00. You can also build a pair from a collection: the Rove Concepts Louis outdoor loveseat and sofa share the same aluminum frame, teak armrests and five finish options per Rove Concepts. Frequently asked questions

Is a loveseat smaller than a sofa?

Usually, but not always. In our listings, loveseats range from 44.25 to 93.3 inches wide and sofas from 78 to 88 inches, so a large loveseat can match or exceed a compact sofa.

What are typical loveseat dimensions?

Most loveseats we carry are about 54 to 80 inches wide and 29.75 to 37.5 inches deep. Check each product page for exact figures.

Can three people sit on a loveseat?

Loveseats are designed and sold for two. A third person may fit briefly on a wide model, but for regular three-person seating, choose a sofa.

Should I buy a loveseat or a sofa for a small living room?

Measure first. A compact loveseat or settee leaves more floor space, but a narrow sofa with slim arms can seat more people in a similar footprint.
