An office water fountain works best when it is sized to the wall, kept out of the main walking path, and placed where reception staff can still hear callers. For most lobbies that means a wall fountain between about 4 and 10 feet wide, or a flush mounted floor fountain against a feature wall, wired to its own switched outlet and topped up on a set schedule. For scale, a fountain should read as part of the wall, not a picture hung on it. A 38 in Reflection Creek suits a waiting nook or private office. Behind a mid size reception desk, the 75 in Olympus Falls or 78 in Solitude River fill the wall. The 10 foot wide Regal Falls and 10 foot tall Mega Grandeur are for double height lobbies.
Office wall fountain or floor fountain?
An office wall fountain hangs from a bracket and sits 5 to 6 in deep, so it keeps floor space clear. The tradeoff is load: slate on the wide panels runs 465 to 960 lb hanging weight, so the wall must be built or reinforced for it. A flush mounted floor fountain such as Tranquil River or Grandeur River stands on its own base with the panel at the rear, so it sits tight to a wall while the floor carries the weight. That suits leased space where you cannot open walls, but it takes 14 in of depth.
Depth matters in commercial space for another reason. The ADA Standards limit objects mounted between 27 and 80 in above the floor to 4 in of protrusion into a circulation path (section 307.2). A 6 in deep wall fountain on a corridor wall can exceed that, so put it in an alcove, behind a desk, or on a wall outside the walking route, and have your designer or code official confirm.
Lobby water feature placement around reception and traffic
- Behind or beside reception, not in front of it. Visitors see the fountain as they approach, and the desk keeps people from touching the surface or the pebble tray.
- Away from the door swing and main path. A wet floor where people walk is the real risk, so leave a buffer.
- Out of direct sun. Adagio notes that features in direct or prolonged sunlight are the most likely to grow algae.
- Not beside planters. Leaves and soil in the basin are a common source of growth.

Sound levels in a workplace
Falling water masks some background chatter, but beside a desk where staff take calls it can be too much, so give reception a few feet of distance or use a side wall. Unwanted noise usually comes from the pump, not the water. Adagio’s FAQ says a loud pump usually means it is touching the tray, and the sponge pump pad keeps vibration from carrying. Flow can be fine tuned with the tabs on the distribution baffle, and wall models use a pull chain that runs pump only, lights only, or both, so you can keep lights on during a meeting and stop the water.
Power and outlet placement
Adagio’s FAQ says its features run on a standard outlet behind the fountain: centered for a single panel, or behind the far left stone on multi panel models. A 90 degree plug means no recessed outlet is needed, and Adagio suggests wiring the outlet to a wall switch so staff can turn the fountain off easily. Olympus Falls and Regal Falls list a 6 foot cord.
Adagio advises against a GFCI outlet hidden behind the panel because it is hard to reset. GFCI rules depend on where the outlet sits and on your local code, so a licensed electrician and your local code have the final word on the outlet, the switch and any permit.
Office fountain decor: logos and surfaces
Logo panels are a real option here. Adagio’s custom logo page describes sandblasting the design into the surface and hand painting it, with a removable vinyl logo as an alternative on glass. It allows about two weeks from final artwork approval to shipping. A staff maintenance schedule
Assign one person and follow Adagio’s maintenance page and water care guide. Based on those pages:
- First two weeks: check the water level daily to learn your evaporation rate. Adagio says some features need filling as often as every other day.
- Every top up: turn the fountain off, pour water onto the surface just above the tray, and stay below the fill line. Top up before small air bubbles appear, since a pump running dry can burn out.
- Water: Adagio recommends distilled water. Never use water from a salt based softener.
- About twice a year: drain, wipe out the tray and liner, and refill. Plan on more often with tap water.
- If it smells musty or turns green: remove the source, clean and refill, and dose treatment only by the model chart in Adagio’s water care guide.
Adagio’s model pages also list an auto fill with gravity drain upgrade, worth asking about for a busy office.
