How much does an outdoor kitchen cost? A prefab stainless island that ships mostly assembled starts around $2,900 to $3,300 in our listings, modular cabinet packages with a grill and sink run about $8,700 to $10,300, and large modular packages reach about $27,500. A professionally built outdoor kitchen averages $16,533 nationally, with a normal range of $6,269 to $27,087, according to HomeAdvisor. Your outdoor kitchen cost comes down to three things: the build type, the appliances, and the utility work. This guide breaks down each line item and shows a sample budget.

Prefab outdoor kitchen price
The cheapest way into a full outdoor kitchen is a one-piece island. The DIY Deluxe Stainless Steel Island with wine cooler is listed at about $3,272. Its listing describes a 157-inch island with 6 main burners, a rear infrared burner and a side burner (96,000 BTU total), black granite counters, drawers, cabinets and castor wheels, and says it arrives almost fully assembled. Units like this skip most construction labor, but you still need a level patio and, for natural gas, a fuel line.
Modular island packages
Modular cabinets give you a built-in look without masonry. NewAge outdoor kitchen sets are listed from about $3,110 for a 3 piece set to about $8,930 for a 5 piece set with a 40 inch Platinum grill. On the Sunstone side, the Sunstone Caprice 6 foot package is about $8,704 and includes a 3 burner grill, a bar sink with hot and cold faucet, and storage in a 72 inch run of 304 stainless steel. Note that its spec table says the countertop is not included, so budget for one. The KoKoMo 7 foot 6 inch island package is about $10,295 with a 32 inch 4 burner grill, a power burner, an outdoor refrigerator and a finished base. At the top end, the Sunstone Big Texan 21 foot package is about $27,486 with a 42 inch hybrid grill, an infrared Companion Pro burner, a refrigerator and a sink.
Custom masonry
Custom builds cost the most because you pay for design, framing, finish and trades. HomeAdvisor puts framework at $200 to $800 per linear foot and overall builds at $33 to $130 per square foot. Fixr uses about $75 per square foot as an average. A custom island still needs the same grill head and appliances listed below, which is why many custom quotes land well above prefab.
Outdoor kitchen cost line items
Grill head
The grill is usually the biggest single appliance. The Sunstone 28 inch 3 burner built-in grill is listed at about $2,423 with 60,000 BTU and a 484 square inch cooking surface, per its listing. Stepping up to the Sunstone 42 inch 5 burner infrared grill brings the price to about $3,736. For help sizing burners, see how many BTUs a gas grill needs.
Island structure and countertop
For a built island, HomeAdvisor lists framing at $200 to $800 per linear foot and countertops at $15 to $185 per square foot, with granite at $15 to $140 and stainless steel at $60 to $100. Fixr estimates framing and cabinets at $100 to $300 per linear foot installed.
Refrigeration and burners
Outdoor-rated refrigerators cost more than indoor mini fridges. The Sunstone SAPFR21PRO is listed at about $1,436 for a 21 inch, 4.1 cubic foot under-counter unit. A Sunstone single drop-in side burner (15,000 BTU) is about $498, while a power burner such as the Napoleon 700 Series power burner is about $1,679. Napoleon’s listing notes a separate power supply kit is required when it is not paired with a Built-in 700 Series grill. Our side burner vs power burner guide explains which one fits your cooking.
Doors and drawers
Built islands need access doors for storage and gas shutoff. The Sunstone 30 inch double door is about $268. Sunstone triple drawer units are listed at about $748. Two doors and a drawer stack can add $1,000 or more.
Utilities, permits and labor
Thumbtack lists $473 to $1,609 to supply a new gas line to an outdoor appliance and at least $303 for a grill line. Bob Vila puts grill gas lines at $20 to $25 per linear foot. HomeAdvisor lists plumbers and gas plumbers at $45 to $200 per hour, electricians at $50 to $150 per hour, permits at $250 to $2,000 total, and labor at 20 to 40 percent of a project budget. Gas, electrical and plumbing work should go to a licensed pro, and your local code and permit office have the final word.

Ways to save on your outdoor kitchen budget
- Choose prefab or modular. Units that ship assembled cut framing and finish labor.
- Use propane. A tank skips the gas line. If the tank sits inside the island, confirm venting requirements with your installer.
- Build in phases. Start with the grill and storage, then add a fridge or power burner later. Leave cutouts sized for them.
- Keep the run short. Framing and counters are priced by the foot.
- Bundle the order. Orders of $999 or more ship freight free with us.

Frequently asked questions
What is a realistic outdoor kitchen budget?
HomeAdvisor’s normal range is $6,269 to $27,087, with $16,533 as the average. A prefab island can come in well under that, while a large custom build can exceed it.
What is the prefab outdoor kitchen price range?
In our listings, one-piece stainless islands run about $2,900 to $10,400, and NewAge modular sets run about $3,110 to $8,930. Fixr says small pre-made islands can start around $1,400.
Is a modular outdoor kitchen cheaper than custom masonry?
Usually, because modular cabinets arrive finished and you skip most framing and veneer labor. Large modular packages with premium appliances can still cost as much as a mid-range custom build.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
Most towns require permits for gas, plumbing and electrical work, according to HomeAdvisor. Check with your local building department and hire licensed pros for those connections.
