Sauna Size Guide: 1, 2, 3 and 4 Person Dimensions

A sauna’s person rating tells you how many people fit on the bench, not how much room you need. This sauna size guide covers both: real exterior dimensions for 1, 2, 3 and 4 person saunas we sell, the bench depth and ceiling height that make a sauna comfortable, and the clearance you should plan around the cabin. If you are still choosing between infrared and traditional, start with our home sauna buying guide.

Sauna size guide: what the person rating really means

A capacity rating assumes people sitting upright, shoulder to shoulder. HUUM, the Estonian heater maker, says in its bench planning guide that each person usually needs about 60 cm (roughly 24 inches) of sitting space. Compare that with a cabin’s inside width.

The North American Sauna Society (NASS) gives a simple rule of thumb on its Build a Sauna page: a good size for an average two or three person sauna is from 4 x 6 feet to 5 x 7 feet, a one person 3 x 3 foot sauna still works, and a sauna 6 feet wide or more is recommended if you want to lie down. Their advice: if you have a choice, do not make it too small.

1 person sauna dimensions

A one person infrared cabin is the smallest footprint you can buy. The Lucia 1-Person Hemlock Infrared Sauna lists exterior dimensions of 35.4 in. W x 35.4 in. D x 74.8 in. H and interior dimensions of 32 x 32 x 71 inches. That is a floor area of under 9 square feet, close to the NASS 3 x 3 foot minimum, and 32 inches of inside width gives one adult more than the 24 inch seat HUUM suggests.

Plan for one seated user. If you want to lie down, look at the larger traditional models below.

2 person sauna dimensions

Two person infrared cabins in our catalog run about 46 inches wide by 40 inches deep:

About 42.5 inches of inside width split between two people is roughly 21 inches each, a little under HUUM’s 24 inch guideline. Two adults fit, but expect to sit close. If you want elbow room, consider a 3 person cabin for two.

3 and 4 person sauna dimensions

The Curacao 3-Person Hemlock Infrared Sauna lists exterior dimensions of 63 in. W x 43.3 in. D x 74.8 in. H and interior dimensions of 60.71 x 39.76 x 69.49 inches. That is roughly 20 inches of bench per person at full capacity, or a very comfortable two.

Outdoor traditional saunas from Dundalk LeisureCraft are much larger because they hold a heater and multi-level benches:

Note that the product names and the descriptions do not always agree on capacity. The Granby is titled 3 person but described for 2 or 3, and the Harmony is titled 4 person but described for 2 to 4. Plan around the lower number if you want comfort. For the shape trade-offs, see barrel sauna vs cabin sauna.

Sauna ceiling height and bench depth

For a traditional sauna, height matters as much as floor area because hot air collects at the ceiling. NASS says a sauna needs a space that is preferably 7 feet high. HUUM’s guide recommends:

  • Bench depth: at least 60 cm, about 24 inches.
  • Bench heights: about 30 cm, 60 cm and 105 cm (roughly 12, 24 and 41 inches) for the lower, middle and top levels.
  • Top bench to ceiling: 110 to 130 cm, about 43 to 51 inches.
  • Straight bench length: at least 120 cm, about 47 inches, and as long as your body if you want to lie down.

Infrared cabins work differently. The heat comes from panels close to your body, so the ceiling and bench layout are fixed by the maker, and interior heights of 69 to 73 inches are normal. Just confirm the cabin fits under your ceiling with room to assemble it.

Room shape and layout

NASS recommends a room shape close to a square, or about a 6:4 ratio between wall lengths, with the door swinging out and placed on a longer wall, and the main upper bench along the longest wall. Their design guidelines add that a good layout gives maximum bench area and minimum floor area.

How much space do you need for a sauna?

Start with the exterior footprint, then add working room:

  1. Door swing: sauna doors swing out, so keep the arc in front of the door clear.
  2. Assembly room: panel kits need space to stand walls up and reach behind them. Check the manual for the clearance the maker requires.
  3. Power: plan the outlet or hardwired circuit before you place the cabin. See our home sauna electrical requirements guide, and match heater output to room volume with our sauna heater size guide.
  4. Ventilation: NASS describes an air inlet of about 4 x 6 inches near the floor on the heater wall and an outlet on the opposite wall just below the upper bench.
  5. Floor and surroundings: NASS calls for a smooth, level, waterproof floor such as tile, concrete or vinyl, not carpet, and a shower and cool-down area nearby.

Outdoor saunas need a level, solid base. Orders of $999 or more ship free by freight (a $200 flat rate applies below that); see our return and refund policy before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What are typical 2 person sauna dimensions?

The two person infrared cabins we carry measure about 46 inches wide, 40 inches deep and 75 to 77 inches tall on the outside. NASS suggests 4 x 6 feet to 5 x 7 feet for an average two or three person traditional sauna.

What are the smallest 1 person sauna dimensions?

The Lucia one person cabin is 35.4 x 35.4 inches outside. NASS notes that one person 3 x 3 foot saunas still work.

How high should a sauna ceiling be?

NASS says preferably 7 feet. HUUM recommends 110 to 130 cm, about 43 to 51 inches, between the top bench and the ceiling.

How deep should a sauna bench be?

HUUM recommends at least 60 cm, about 24 inches, with about 24 inches of bench width per seated person.

Is sauna use safe for everyone?

Not necessarily. Heat affects people differently, and NASS advises consulting a doctor before using a sauna. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition or take medication, talk with your doctor first and follow the manufacturer’s time and temperature guidance.
