Our Synesso review in one line: Synesso builds premium, temperature stable espresso machines for specialty coffee, and the right model depends on how much control your baristas want and how busy your bar gets. The ES.1 brings pressure profiling to home and light commercial bars, the S-Series keeps things simple for cafes that want consistent volumetric shots, and the MVP Hydra is the high volume flagship with an independent pump for every group. Prices in our listings run from $12,600 to $31,250 at the time of writing.
For group sizing, voltage and a full spec table, see our commercial espresso machine buying guide. This review focuses on the brand and on fit.
Who is Synesso?
According to Synesso’s own company page, the brand began when engineer Mark Barnett left La Marzocco USA in 2003 to “build a better machine.” He and Sandy Schneiter built the first prototype in their garage in 2004, and the first machine went to a cafe on Broadway in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Synesso’s homepage describes its machines as “Seattle Built since 2004.”
Milestones from the company timeline:
- 2010: 4 stage pressure profiling released
- 2015: MVP and MVP Hydra launch
- 2018: S-Series launches
- 2021: Synesso joins Middleby Coffee Solutions Group
Synesso says it supports machines in 75 countries.
What Synesso is known for
Temperature stability
Synesso’s founding story centers on temperature stability, and its S-Series page explains the approach: stainless steel boilers, plus individual brew boilers filled with preheated water, each run by its own PID controller. Synesso says this setup is standard across its commercial machines.
MVP: manual volumetric programming
On its ES.1 page, Synesso explains MVP tech (often called pressure profiling) as letting a barista manually control the pressure ramp during a shot, save it, and then let the machine repeat that shot by volume. Staff can dial in by hand, then run the shot automatically through the rush.
Hydra: independent pumps per group
The MVP Hydra page says the Hydra gives each group head its own pump and motor, plus its own brew boiler, which Synesso positions as the high volume option. It also lists 4 stage pressure control and 6 saved recipes per group head.

Synesso ES.1
Synesso pitches the ES.1 to home, mobile and light commercial baristas. Beyond profiling, its page lists shot history and a tea spout adjustable from 165F to 205F. Pick it if you want Synesso control without a full commercial install.
Synesso S-Series
Synesso says the S stands for simple: a single pump system, auto volumetric shots and a low profile that keeps the barista facing the customer. It suits cafes with rotating staff who run one or two coffees all day.
Synesso MVP Hydra and MVP
The MVP Hydra is the flagship, offered in one, two and three group sizes per Synesso. The MVP (non Hydra) has no page of its own on synesso.com today; Synesso mentions it only alongside the Hydra, so we describe it from our listing, which notes 6 programmable positions per group and 4 magnetic flow meters. Call us to confirm the exact MVP configuration before you order. The 2 group Hydra costs $4,500 more than the 2 group MVP in our listings (our math), which buys fully independent pumps.
Synesso pros and cons
Pros
- Temperature control built around individual PID controlled brew boilers on every commercial model, per Synesso.
- Pressure profiling with saved, repeatable recipes on the ES.1, MVP and MVP Hydra.
- Heavy build: Synesso cites stainless, brass and copper construction on the Hydra.
- Warranty: the S-Series page lists a two year warranty, five years on some parts and a lifetime warranty on its group head activation switches. The ES.1 page lists 13 months from shipment.
- Customization: powder coated panels in any RAL color, wood accent kits and vinyl graphics, per Synesso.
Cons
- Price. Even the ES.1 starts at $12,600 in our listings, and custom powder coating is extra (from $1,369 for the S-Series).
- Installation. Commercial models need a water line, a drain and a dedicated electrical circuit. Our S-Series, MVP and MVP Hydra listings do not state voltage or amperage, so ask us for the spec sheet.
- Strict water rules. Synesso’s ES.1 water standards include 50 to 85 ppm total hardness and 0 ppm chlorine, and it says water outside the standards voids the warranty.
- Service. Synesso strongly recommends annual preventative maintenance by a qualified Synesso technician; check who services machines near you.
- Learning curve. Profiling rewards trained staff; high turnover cafes may do better with the S-Series.

Synesso review verdict
Synesso is a strong choice for specialty cafes and serious home baristas who care about temperature stability and repeatable shots and can support a proper install. Choose the S-Series for simple, consistent volume; the MVP or MVP Hydra if your team profiles coffee and you need speed; and the ES.1 if you want that control at home or on a cart.

Can the Synesso ES.1 be used commercially?
Synesso markets the ES.1 for home, mobile and light commercial use, with 120 volt or 220 volt versions and reservoir or plumbed water.
Is the Synesso S-Series good for a busy cafe?
Synesso designed the S-Series for simple, volumetric shots with programmable pre-infusion and a low profile, offered in 2 and 3 group sizes.
