Table Lamp Size Guide: Height, Shade, Placement

This table lamp size guide comes down to one test: when you sit next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should land close to your eye level, so you see a soft glow instead of a bare bulb. On a standard end table or nightstand that usually means a lamp about 24 to 32 inches tall, with a shade wider than the base and about one third of the lamp’s height. Below are heights, shade sizing, placement tips and real lamps from our catalog with their listed dimensions.

Table lamp size guide: typical height ranges

These are common design rules of thumb, not fixed standards, so check them against your own furniture.

  • Accent lamps, about 14 to 21 inches: mood light on shelves, dressers and small nightstands. Rarely tall enough for reading from a sofa.
  • Standard table lamps, about 24 to 32 inches: the workhorse size for end tables and nightstands.
  • Tall and buffet lamps, about 28 to 34 inches and up: consoles and sideboards seen from standing height.
  • Desk and task lamps, about 15 to 27 inches: adjustable arms or heads make reach more important than height.

How tall should a table lamp be? Use your seated eye level

What matters is the table plus the lamp. Seated beside it, the bottom edge of the shade should sit roughly at your eye level. Too high and the bulb glares from under the shade; too low and the light pools on the table.

The LampsPlus guide to choosing table lamp size, shade and bulb suggests measuring from the tabletop to your seated eye level. Its example of 18 inches gives a shade height of about one third of that (6 inches) and an overall lamp height of the shade plus 18 inches (24 inches). Treat it as an estimate: lamps with taller necks or shades can still work if the shade bottom lands near your eyes.

In practice, lower tables pair with taller lamps and higher tables with shorter ones.

Nightstand lamp height with your bed and headboard

Sit up in bed against the headboard and measure from the nightstand top to your eye level. That is your target shade bottom height. Also check:

  • Mattress height: a nightstand at or slightly above the mattress is easiest. If it sits much lower, choose a taller lamp.
  • Headboard: a lamp topping out near or a little below a tall headboard looks balanced. With a low headboard, a slimmer lamp keeps the wall uncluttered.
  • Switch reach: rotary socket switches sit under the shade; in line and base switches are easier to find in the dark.
  • Night lights: several lamps in our table include a small LED night light in the base.

End table and sofa side lamps

Beside a sofa, aim for a shade bottom a little above the sofa arm and near seated eye level, with the shade roughly in line with your shoulder so light falls onto your book. If the end table is lower than the arm, size up the lamp; if it is taller, size down. For a pair of lamps, keep the shade bottoms at the same level even if the tables differ. For a reading chair with no table nearby, see our floor lamp height guide.

Desk, console and buffet lamps

Desk lamps: aim light at the work surface without glare on the screen. Place the lamp opposite your writing hand to avoid shadows.

Consoles: often 30 to 36 inches tall and seen while standing, so the lamp is mostly decorative. Choose slimmer lamps for narrow consoles and keep the shade from hanging past the front edge.

Buffet lamps: tall and narrow so a pair can flank a mirror or artwork on a sideboard. Leave space between the shade top and any art above.

Lamp shade size: width, height and harp

  • Width: the shade bottom should be wider than the widest part of the base, often by an inch or more on each side.
  • Height: about one third of the overall lamp height usually looks proportional.
  • Coverage: the shade should hide the socket from normal viewing angles.
  • Harp and fitter: a harp is the metal loop holding a spider fitter shade; a taller harp raises the shade. Many lamps instead use an uno fitter that threads onto the socket, as the HomeRoots lamps below do. Replacement shades must match the fitter type.
  • Table space: the shade should not overhang the table edge, and a nightstand still needs room for a phone and a glass of water.

Bulbs and brightness, briefly

Check the listing for socket type and maximum wattage and never exceed it. For reading, LampsPlus recommends 60 watts or more, or an LED with comparable light output. Warm color temperatures around 2700 to 3000 Kelvin suit living rooms and bedrooms, and three way switches let one lamp handle reading and ambient light. New outlets near a bed are a job for a licensed electrician under local code.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a table lamp be?

Most standard table lamps are about 24 to 32 inches tall. The better test is that the shade bottom sits near your seated eye level, so measure from the tabletop to your eyes while seated.

What is a good nightstand lamp height?

Sit up in bed and measure from the nightstand top to your eye level, then choose a lamp whose shade bottom lands near that number. Your bed and nightstand heights decide it.

How do I choose the right lamp shade size?

Choose a shade wider than the widest part of the base, about one third of the total lamp height, that hides the socket and matches your lamp’s fitter type.

Should paired lamps be the same height?

Usually yes. If the tables differ, pick lamps that bring both shade bottoms to the same level.
