The short answer on a two post vs four post lift: a two post lift picks the car up by its frame and leaves the wheels hanging free, so it is the better choice for brakes, suspension, tires and exhaust work. A four post lift is a drive-on platform that holds the car on its tires, so it is the easier choice for parking one car over another, storage and oil changes. Your ceiling height, concrete slab and power supply usually decide the rest.
How a two post vs four post lift works
Two post lifts: arms under the frame
Two columns are anchored to the floor, one on each side of the car. Four swing arms reach under the vehicle to the lifting points the car maker specifies. Once the car is up, the wheels and suspension hang free. Symmetric arms are equal length and center the car between the posts. Asymmetric arms are shorter in front and longer in back, which sets the car farther back so the doors open more easily.
Two post lifts also come in two layouts. A floor plate (also called base plate) lift runs its hoses and cables across a plate on the floor between the posts, so you drive over a low hump. A clear floor lift routes them overhead through a top bar, which leaves the floor open but needs more ceiling height.
Four post lifts: drive-on runways
A four post lift has two runways joined by crossbeams on four posts. You drive on, set the wheel chocks and raise the whole platform. The wheels sit on the runways, so wheel and brake jobs need an add-on rolling jack.
Garage car lift ceiling height and space
Start with the fixed height of the lift itself, then add the vehicles. Here is what Katool publishes for a few models we sell:
- KT-H105 two post (floor plate): 110.9 inches overall height, 140.4 inches overall width, 70.8 inches max lifting height.
- ME-H90S two post: 74.8 inches max lifting height, 108 inches between columns.
- KT-4H110 four post: 94.88 inch posts, 126 inches overall width, 229.73 inches overall length with ramps, 84.25 inches max lifting height.
For storage on a four post lift, a rough check is max lifting height plus the roof height of the top car plus a few inches of margin. With the KT-4H110 and a 57 inch tall sedan on top, that is 84.25 plus 57, or about 141 inches (11 feet 9 inches) before margin. A lower door track or opener becomes the real limit.
For a two post lift, the column height (about 111 inches on the KT-H105) is the bare minimum ceiling. To stand under the car you also need lift height plus vehicle height to clear the ceiling.
Concrete and power requirements
Katool states that its two post lifts need concrete at least 5.9 inches (150 mm) thick with a 3,000 PSI rating, and that slab strength must be verified before installation. Its pre-purchase checklist in the Katool help center says installation should not proceed if thickness or PSI cannot be confirmed.
Power varies by model. Katool lists the KT-H105 motor as 220V, 60Hz, single phase, the ME-H90S as 110V or 220V, and the KT-4H110 four post as 110V. A licensed electrician, the lift manual and your local building code have the final word on concrete, anchoring and wiring. Which jobs suit each lift
- Wheel, brake and suspension work: a two post lift, because the wheels hang free.
- Parking two cars in one bay or long term storage: a four post lift, because the car sits on its tires and no arms need setting.
- Oil changes and inspections: either works. A four post lift is faster to load.
Cost at the time of writing
In our current Katool range, two post lifts start at $1,849 (ME-H90S) and run to $3,495 (SP-12CFX 12,000 lb). Four post lifts are $2,999 (AK-4H110) and $3,295 (SP-11P). Budget separately for installation, concrete work and an electrician. For air tools, see our air compressor size guide.
Safety and locks
The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) advises using the vehicle maker’s lifting points, lowering the load onto the lift’s mechanical locks before going under the car and inspecting for leaks and loose anchor bolts before use. ALI’s buyer guide says a lift is only certified if it is in the ALI Directory and carries the gold label. Our listings above do not state ALI certification, so check the directory if that matters to you or your local code.
Katool also notes that the most common issue it hears about on its two post lifts is uneven lifting between posts, usually from air in the hydraulics or cable adjustment.
Scissor lift and portable car lift alternatives
If your ceiling is under 10 feet or you rent, a mid rise scissor lift or portable car lift may be the better fit. Katool lists the KT-X77 scissor lift at about 39.4 inches max height and about 4.3 inches lowered. The VEVOR 7,000 lb portable car lift ($2,093.99) reaches 26.8 inches, runs on a 120V power unit, has mechanical safety locks and folds for wall storage, according to its listing. You work on a creeper, not standing.
How to choose
- Measure ceiling height at the lowest point, including the door track and opener.
- Confirm slab thickness and PSI, or have a contractor test it.
- Check what power is available near the bay.
- Decide whether you mostly fix cars (two post) or store and park them (four post).
- Match capacity to your heaviest vehicle with room to spare.

Frequently asked questions
What ceiling height do I need for a home car lift?
It depends on the model and use. A two post lift like the KT-H105 stands about 111 inches tall on its own. Stacking two cars on a four post lift like the KT-4H110 can need about 141 inches plus margin with a 57 inch tall car on top. Check the manual for your exact model.
Clear floor vs floor plate: which is better?
A clear floor lift leaves the floor open between the posts but needs more ceiling height for its overhead bar. A floor plate lift works under lower ceilings but leaves a low plate you drive over.
Can I install a two post lift on any garage floor?
No. Katool calls for at least 5.9 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for its two post lifts. Have the slab verified by a qualified contractor before you buy.
Is a scissor lift or portable car lift enough?
For tire rotations, brakes and oil changes, often yes. For exhaust or transmission work, a full rise two post lift is easier.
