Barrel Sauna Door Not Closing? How to Adjust It

A barrel sauna door that rubs, will not latch, or shows a gap is usually telling you something about the barrel, not the door. Cedar moves with the weather, the base can settle, and the bands that hold the staves can loosen, and any of those can pull the door wall slightly out of square. Almost Heaven Saunas, another barrel sauna maker, says in its barrel door troubleshooting article that the most common culprit is a barrel that has leaned forward as the wood settles. Work through the checks below in order before you touch the door hardware.

This guide is for a sauna that is already built; for the build itself, see our barrel sauna assembly guide. The steps here draw on Dundalk Leisurecraft’s Canadian Timber Harmony assembly instructions and published maker advice, not a hands on test.

Barrel sauna door symptoms and likely causes

Symptom Most likely cause Check first
Door rubs at the top on the latch side Barrel leaning forward or base settled on one side Level on the front wall and base
Door will not latch or springs back open Door wall out of square, or magnets or latch set too tight Level, then magnets or catch
Barrel sauna door gap along one edge Seasonal wood shrinkage, loose bands, or hinge side shifted Band fasteners and hinge screws
Door drops or sags at the latch corner Loose or stripped hinge screws Hinge screws with the door supported
Door sticks in wet weather, fine when dry Cedar swelling with moisture Wait for dry weather before adjusting

Before you adjust anything

  • Heater off and cool. Switch an electric heater off at its control and breaker. Let a wood stove burn out completely and cool. Do not work on the sauna while the stones or stove are hot.
  • Support glass doors. Every Dundalk barrel listing in the table below that names a door type lists a glass door. Have a second person hold the door whenever you loosen hinge screws, and never pry against the glass. If you see a chip or crack in the glass, stop using the sauna and contact the manufacturer.
  • Change one thing at a time and test the door after each adjustment.

Step 1: Check the barrel for lean and the base for level

Almost Heaven’s test is simple: hold a level vertically against the barrel ends and see if the bubble shows a lean. If it does, the company says to push the barrel back into position and links a video showing how.

Dundalk’s manual sets the reference points you are checking against. It calls for a level base with a slight slope to the back for drainage, and during the build it uses a level and rubber mallet to tap the door section until it is centered and level. Put the same level on the door section now. If it is out, look underneath before you blame the door:

  • Is either cradle sitting lower than the other? Pavers and gravel can settle.
  • Is the front of the base now lower than the back? The slight slope should run toward the rear, not the door.

Fix a settled base at the base; our outdoor sauna foundation guide covers pad options and cradle support. Lifting a loaded barrel is a job for helpers or a contractor, not one person with a jack.

Step 2: Check band tension

The marine grade aluminum bands with stainless steel tightening bolts are what hold the staves tight against the end walls. Dundalk’s care section says the cedar shrinks or expands depending on moisture, and the desired effect is for the wood to expand into the bands so the staves get tighter. In a dry spell the reverse happens and the bands can loosen slightly.

Walk around the sauna and check each band fastener. During assembly Dundalk keeps all fasteners at the same height, tightens them in stages while a helper taps the staves, and says you cannot overtighten. If a band has gone slack, snug it back up in the same even way, front and back bands first, then the center band. For seasonal band checks, the band section of our outdoor sauna winterizing guide fits into the same routine.

Step 3: Allow for seasonal swelling and shrinkage

Almost Heaven says wood movement is most noticeable in the first year after assembly. A door that sticks after a week of rain and closes fine in dry weather is usually the cedar, not a defect. Give it a few dry days before you sand or plane anything; wood trimmed in wet weather can leave a gap once it dries.

Dundalk also says minor water seepage on the top and sides of an outdoor sauna is normal and evaporates once the heater runs.

Step 4: Sauna door adjustment at the hinges, magnets and latch

Hinge screws

With a helper supporting the door, check that every hinge screw is tight. If a screw spins without biting, the hole is stripped; ask the manufacturer what replacement screw to use rather than guessing at a longer one.

Magnets and catch

Almost Heaven says that if the barrel is level but the door still does not seal, slightly loosening the door frame magnets can improve the seal. A catch set too tight can also stop a door from latching.

Adjustable glass door hinges

Some glass sauna doors have adjustable hinges. Icetubs, a different brand, describes in its sauna door troubleshooting page loosening the main hinge bolts and using paired screws to shift the door, testing after each small change. Hardware differs between brands. The Dundalk manual we opened covers door handles but not hinge adjustment, so call Dundalk before loosening any glass door hinge you are unsure about.

When to contact Dundalk or us

Dundalk’s manual gives a 5 year residential limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. It covers replacement parts only, not labor, and excludes normal wear and tear, improper installation, insufficient maintenance and natural weather conditions. Contact Dundalk Leisurecraft support at 888-923-9813 or support@leisurecraft.com if:

  • The glass is chipped, cracked or loose in its frame.
  • A hinge, door frame or door section is split or broken.
  • The barrel is level and the bands are snug, but the door still will not close.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my barrel sauna door not closing all of a sudden?

The most common reasons are a barrel that has leaned forward, a base that has settled under one cradle, or cedar that has swelled after wet weather.

How do I fix a barrel sauna door gap?

Check the band fasteners first, since dry weather can shrink the cedar and loosen them. Then check the hinge screws and the magnets or catch. Avoid trimming wood until you have seen how the gap behaves in both wet and dry weather.

Can I do a sauna door adjustment myself?

Leveling, band tightening and snugging hinge screws are owner jobs with the heater off and cool. For glass door hinge changes you are unsure about, or any broken glass, contact the manufacturer first.

Is door misalignment covered by warranty?

Dundalk’s warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship with parts only, and excludes improper installation, maintenance issues and natural weather conditions. Ask Dundalk to confirm for your case.
