Chaise Lounge Buying Guide: Indoor and Outdoor

A chaise lounge is a long chair built for one person to sit with their legs stretched out, with a back at one end and an open foot. To choose one, first decide whether it will live indoors or outdoors, then check the listed length, width and height (or seat height), then back adjustment, materials and weight capacity. Indoor chaises we compared run roughly 62 to 67 inches long; outdoor loungers run about 76 to 81 inches because they are made to lie flat.

What is a chaise lounge?

The name comes from the French “chaise longue,” which Chairish’s explainer translates as “long chair.” It is easy to confuse with a few other pieces:

  • Daybed: Chairish notes that a piece with three back panels is a daybed, not a chaise. Our daybed vs futon guide covers that category.
  • Sofa: A sofa seats several people side by side. A chaise is mainly for one person lying lengthwise.
  • Sofa with chaise: A sofa or sectional with one extended seat. It is a different purchase from a standalone chaise.
  • Sun lounger: The outdoor version, usually an adjustable frame on short legs that reclines nearly flat. On our store, “lounger” and “outdoor chaise lounge” generally describe the same product type.

Indoor vs outdoor chaise lounge

Indoor chaises are upholstered pieces for reading corners, bedrooms and living rooms, and most have a fixed back. Examples include the Benzara Henry Chaise Lounger (fabric over a bentwood birch frame) and the Benzara Siva Ergonomic Chaise Lounge Chair, a curved foam piece that rests on the floor and has a removable, machine-washable cover.

Outdoor chaises use aluminum, acacia or teak frames with sling, mesh or cushioned seats, and most have a back that adjusts. The Rove Concepts Preston Outdoor Lounger, for example, lists a powder-coated aluminum frame, UV-resistant mesh fabric and four positions from upright to flat.

Do not put an indoor upholstered chaise on an uncovered patio. The indoor listings describe corduroy, faux leather or fabric over foam, and none claim weather resistance.

Chaise lounge size: length, width and height

  • Length: The number that matters most. Indoor chaises we compared list 62.5 to 66.9 inches; outdoor loungers list about 76 to 81 inches.
  • Width: Single seats list about 18 to 28 inches. Oversized and double designs list 38 to 48 inches.
  • Height: Outdoor loungers are often listed with the back laid flat, which is why the Benzara Pina shows only 12 inches. The Benzara Sally lists 12.5 inches reclined and 37 inches upright. If a seat height is listed (the Preston lists 14.1 inches), compare it with a chair you find easy to get out of.

Room and walkway clearance

Tape the footprint on the floor using the fully reclined length, since that is the most floor space the lounger takes. Our sectional sofa dimensions guide cites Homes and Gardens on spacing: about 30 to 36 inches for walkways between large pieces, or as little as 24 inches in tight spots. Keep the open foot of the chaise out of the main path from the door.

Single vs double chaise lounge

A single chaise fits one adult and is the easiest to place. A double chaise lounge, sometimes sold as a sun bed or oversized chaise, fits two people or one person with room to curl up, and takes roughly twice the width.

Some listings give width x depth x height; we put the long side first in every row. The Rove Concepts listings note measurements can vary by up to 2 inches.

Adjustable backs and reclining positions

  • Number of positions: The Linnea lists three; the Preston and the LeisureMod Marlin each list four.
  • Flat position: If you want to lie face down, confirm the listing says the back goes flat or gives a fully reclined dimension.
  • Head support: The Linnea and the Rove Concepts Spencer each include a head cushion.

Indoors, adjustable backs are rare. The Benzara Dora listing says its backrest flattens into a sleeping surface for an overnight guest.

Materials, cushions and weight capacity

For outdoor chaises, the frame (aluminum, acacia, teak or treated pine) drives most of the upkeep. Rather than repeat that comparison, see our guide to the best patio furniture material. For cushions, look for quick-drying foam or UV-resistant fabric; the Florian listing names EcoDry cushions. Fitted covers are sold separately for some models.

Indoors, it comes down to texture and cleaning: corduroy and waffle-stitch fabric feel soft, faux leather wipes clean, and a removable cover like the Siva’s can be machine washed.

Weight capacity is missing from many listings. In our table only the HomeRoots (300 lb) and three Rove Concepts loungers (330.7 to 462 lb) list a limit. If it matters to you, call us rather than assuming a number.

Where to place a chaise lounge

  • Reading corner: Angle it toward a window with a floor lamp, and make sure the arm side suits the room (the HomeRoots model is right-hand facing).
  • Bedroom: At the foot of the bed or along a wall, with a clear path to the closet.
  • Living room: Opposite the sofa or under a window, so the open foot does not block the walkway.
  • Pool or patio: Pairs with a small table between them, turned toward the sun or set under shade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard chaise lounge size?

Among the listings we compared, indoor chaises are about 62 to 67 inches long, and outdoor loungers about 76 to 81 inches long and 24 to 28 inches wide for a single.

How wide is a double chaise lounge?

The wide models in our table list 38.3 inches (Rove Concepts Florian) and 48 inches (Benzara Cline Oversized). Some double designs, such as the LeisureMod Chelsea, do not list dimensions, so confirm with us first.

Can I use an indoor chaise lounge outside?

We do not recommend it. Indoor listings describe upholstery and foam with no weather resistance, so choose a model sold as an outdoor chaise lounge.

What is the difference between a chaise lounge and a daybed?

A chaise has a back at one end and is built for lounging. A daybed has backs on three sides.
