Sectional Sofa Dimensions: What Size Do You Need?

Sectional sofa dimensions are two numbers that behave differently from a regular sofa’s. Width is the long side, arm to arm. Depth is the other leg of the shape: on a chaise sectional it is measured to the front of the chaise, and on an L-shaped sectional it is the full length of the return. Together they draw a rectangle on your floor. This guide covers how to measure for it, how much walkway and coffee table space to leave, and published sizes of sectionals we sell.

Sectional sofa dimensions by shape

There is no single standard size. Each shape uses width and depth in its own way:

  • Chaise sectional. A sofa with one extended seat. Width is the whole piece; depth is measured to the end of the chaise, so it is far deeper than the seating section beside it.
  • L-shaped sectional. Two seating runs meet at a corner. Both numbers are long, and some are nearly square, such as 106.7 x 106.7 in.
  • U-shaped sectional. Seating on three sides. The footprint is the outer width by the length of the two returns, and the open space inside the U matters as much as the outside.
  • Modular sectional. The listed size is one configuration of rearrangeable pieces; see modular vs regular sectionals.

Dimensions are from each product page at the time of writing; for every Rove Concepts piece, the matching roveconcepts.com page showed the same width and depth. Rove notes measurements can vary by up to 2 in, and prices change and can differ by fabric.

How much space for a sectional: clearances to plan around

The furniture is only part of the footprint. In a guide to living room clearances, Homes and Gardens gives these spacing figures:

  • Between large pieces of furniture: about 30 to 36 in, or as little as 24 in in tight quarters.
  • Behind a sofa against a wall: 3 to 5 in.
  • Sofa to coffee table: 14 to 18 in.
  • Rug to wall: 12 to 18 in of exposed floor, a little less in small rooms.

Livingetc’s article on the 18-inch seating rule treats 18 in as a working distance from sofa to coffee table. The designers it quotes would tighten that to about 15 in in a small apartment and allow 20 in in a large room. On a sectional, measure that gap from the front of the main seats, not from the chaise, which usually runs alongside the table.

What size sectional do I need? Measure the room in five steps

  1. Measure each wall the sectional will touch, noting doors, windows and vents.
  2. Mark the walkways from each door through the room. Those lanes need 30 to 36 in.
  3. Tape the rectangle (width x depth from the listing) on the floor with painter’s tape, then mark the chaise or return inside it.
  4. Add the coffee table 14 to 18 in in front of the main seats, using your table’s real size.
  5. Walk the route to every seat. If you have to turn sideways, go down a size or switch the chaise side.

Also check the delivery path. Our guide to whether a couch will fit through your door covers box sizes and diagonal depth, which this article does not repeat.

L-shaped sectional dimensions: worked examples

The figures below are our math, using the clearances above. Treat them as estimates.

  • Nuvo L-Sectional in a corner. At 106.7 x 106.7 in, plus a 4 in gap behind each side, each wall needs about 110.7 in (roughly 9 ft 3 in) clear of doors and vents.
  • Porter Sectional on a 12 ft wall. A 144 in wall minus 116 in leaves 28 in at the open end. That is below the 30 in walkway but above the 24 in tight minimum, so it works if that end is not a main path.
  • Porter Sectional room depth. 4 in behind plus 69.5 in to the front of the chaise is 73.5 in from the wall. Add a 30 to 36 in walkway past the chaise and you need about 103.5 to 109.5 in of room depth before anything else sits on that side.
  • Milo Modular on the same 12 ft wall. 144 minus 133.4 leaves about 10.6 in, enough for a slim side table but not a walkway. The Dresden at 170 in needs a wall longer than 14 ft.

U-shaped and chaise sectionals: what changes

A U shape adds a second problem: the space inside it. If a coffee table sits in the middle, the open span needs the table’s length plus 14 to 18 in on each side, so table length plus 28 to 36 in (our math). The open side of the U also needs a 30 to 36 in path if people walk past it. Some U-shaped listings in our store do not label width and depth clearly, so call 866-777-2590 to confirm measurements before ordering.

For a chaise sectional, the overall depth is the chaise, but the coffee table sits in front of the shorter seating section. Pick the left or right chaise version so the chaise does not point into a doorway or walking path. Overall depth is also not seat depth. The Porter Extended Sectional lists 69.5 in overall depth but a 25 in seat depth. Our sofa depth guide explains the comfort side of that number. If your room has curves or a bay window, see curved sectionals for small spaces.

Frequently asked questions

What are standard sectional sofa dimensions?

There is no single standard. In our catalog (not an industry standard), chaise sectionals run 106.7 to 170 in wide and 65 to 88.25 in deep, and L-shaped sectionals run 106.7 to 126.5 in per side. Always use the specific listing’s numbers.

How much space do you need for a sectional?

Add 3 to 5 in behind it, 14 to 18 in to the coffee table, and 30 to 36 in for any walkway, per Homes and Gardens. Tape the full width by depth rectangle on the floor first.

What size sectional do I need for a 12 x 12 ft room?

By our math, an L-shaped sectional around 106.7 in per side fits into a 144 in corner with room for a walkway along one open side. A 126.5 in corner piece leaves about 13 in per side after a 4 in wall gap, which is too tight for a path.

How do I measure an L-shaped sectional?

Measure the outside of each leg from the corner to the arm; listings give these as width and depth. Add the wall gap and walkway clearances to both. Questions? Call 866-777-2590, Monday to Friday, 9AM to 6PM PST.
