Comforter Sizes Chart: Twin to California King

Comforter sizes are not standardized the way mattress sizes are, which is why two “queen” comforters can differ by 6 inches or more. As a rule of thumb, a twin comforter is about 66 to 68 inches wide, a queen about 86 to 90 or more, and a king about 90 to 108 inches wide. The right size for your bed depends on your mattress width, its height and how much drape you want on each side. This comforter size chart pulls the typical ranges together, shows how to do the math, and lists the real dimensions of comforter sets we sell.

Comforter sizes chart: twin to California king

The typical ranges below come from the Sleep Foundation comforter size chart. Widths are listed first.

Comforter size Typical comforter dimensions Mattress dimensions
Twin 66 to 68 in. x 86 to 90 in. 38 x 75 in.
Twin XL 68 in. x 86 to 90 in. 38 x 80 in.
Full 78 to 88 in. x 86 to 92 in. 54 x 75 in.
Queen 86 to 90 in. x 90 to 100 in. 60 x 80 in.
King 90 to 108 in. x 86 to 108 in. 76 x 80 in.
California king 90 to 110 in. x 92 to 108 in. 72 x 84 in.

Notice how wide some ranges are. A king comforter at the small end barely covers the top of a thick mattress, while one at the large end can reach close to the floor on a low bed. That is why the label alone is not enough; check the actual dimensions on the listing.

How to measure for the right comforter size

You need two numbers: mattress width and mattress height (including any topper). The Sleep Foundation formula is simple: multiply the mattress height by two and add the mattress width. That is the comforter width that just covers both sides. For example, a 60 in. wide queen mattress that is 15 in. tall needs a 90 in. wide comforter to reach the bottom edge of the mattress on each side.

To find the drape you will actually get, flip the math around:

  1. Subtract the mattress width from the comforter width.
  2. Divide by two. That is the overhang on each side.
  3. For the foot of the bed, subtract mattress length from comforter length. Remember that pillows and a tucked top edge use up several inches.

Compare the overhang to your mattress height. If the overhang is less than the mattress height, you will see the mattress edge or your bed skirt. If it is several inches more, the comforter will cover the box spring or frame rail too.

Real comforter dimensions from our listings

Here is what the comforter sets we sell measure, according to their listings, with the drape each one gives on a standard mattress of that size. All of these are from Benzara.

Set Size Comforter (W x L) Side drape on matching mattress Price
Kia 2 piece Twin 68 x 86 in. 15 in. $245.57
Sieno 3 piece Twin XL 68 x 90 in. 15 in. $205.81
Sieno 4 piece Queen 90 x 90 in. 15 in. $231.60
Jela 5 piece Queen 92 x 92 in. 16 in. $404.39
Loi 7 piece Queen 96 x 96 in. 18 in. $294.59
Sieno 4 piece King 106 x 92 in. 15 in. $285.30
Jela 5 piece King 108 x 92 in. 16 in. $434.10
Regy 10 piece King 110 x 96 in. 17 in. $384.67

One tip when reading listings: several king listings label the 106 to 110 in. side as “L” and the 92 to 96 in. side as “W”. On a king bed, the larger number is the side that runs across the bed. If a listing’s labels look reversed, go by the numbers, or call us and we will confirm.

Queen comforter dimensions vs full and king beds

Can you use a queen comforter on a full bed?

Usually yes. A full mattress is 54 in. wide, so a 90 in. queen comforter leaves about 18 in. of drape per side, enough to cover most mattresses fully. The Sleep Foundation notes a queen on a full will likely drape down either side, which many people like. It will be a little long at the foot (a full is 75 in. long).

King comforter on a queen bed

This is the most common sizing up question. A 108 in. king comforter on a 60 in. queen mattress leaves about 24 in. per side. On a tall bed that can look generous and luxurious. On a low platform bed, the edges can puddle on the floor, which the Sleep Foundation describes as a less polished look. Measure from the top of your mattress to the floor before you size up; if that distance is less than 24 in., the comforter will touch the floor. Our platform bed height guide has typical frame heights if you are still choosing a bed.

What about a California king?

A California king mattress is 72 x 84 in.: narrower but longer than a king. A 108 x 92 in. king comforter gives a California king about 18 in. per side but only about 8 in. at the foot, so look for California king or oversized comforters about 96 in. or more in length if you like full coverage at the foot. See king vs California king for why the sheets are not interchangeable either.

When to buy an oversized comforter

Standard comforters are cut close to the mattress size; oversized ones add width and length for extra drape. Consider oversized or sizing up if:

  • Your mattress plus topper is 14 in. tall or more.
  • You share the bed and tend to fight over the covers.
  • You skip a bed skirt and want the frame rail hidden.
  • Your bed is high off the floor.

Stick to the standard size if your bed is low, you tuck the comforter in, or you prefer a tailored look that stops at the mattress edge.

Shams and extras: sizes in a comforter set

Comforter sets usually include shams sized to match. On our listings, standard shams measure 20 x 26 in., king shams 20 x 36 in., and Euro shams 26 x 26 in. Larger sets (7 to 10 pieces) often add Euro shams, decorative pillows or a bed skirt. If you are still deciding between a comforter and a duvet with a cover, read comforter vs duvet first; the sizing math above works the same way for duvet inserts.

Frequently asked questions

What are standard queen comforter dimensions?

Most queen comforters fall between 86 and 90 in. wide and 90 to 100 in. long. The queen sets we sell measure from 90 x 90 in. to 96 x 96 in.

How much should a comforter hang over the side of the bed?

At minimum, enough to cover the mattress edge, which means overhang equal to your mattress height. Many people prefer a few extra inches so it also covers the box spring or frame rail.

Should I size up my comforter?

Size up if you have a deep mattress, a high bed, or share with a partner. Do not size up on a low bed if you dislike fabric touching the floor.

Are comforter sizes the same across brands?

No. There is no single standard, so two comforters with the same size label can differ by several inches. Always check the listed dimensions.
