King vs California king comes down to one trade: a standard king is 4 inches wider, a California king is 4 inches longer. Neither is simply “bigger.” This guide gives the exact mattress sizes, who each one suits, how much room you need, why the sheets are not interchangeable, and the real frame dimensions of the Rove Concepts beds we carry that come in both sizes.
King vs California king: the exact dimensions
According to the Sleep Foundation’s California king vs king guide, the standard sizes are:
| King | California king | |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress width | 76 in | 72 in |
| Mattress length | 80 in | 84 in |
| Surface area | 6,080 sq in | 6,048 sq in |
| Width per person (two sleepers, our math) | 38 in | 36 in |
| Best for (Sleep Foundation) | Couples, families with small children, wider rooms | People over 6 feet tall, pets at the foot of the bed, narrower rooms |
| Sheets and accessories | Widely available | Fewer options, often more expensive |
The two differ by just 32 square inches. What changes is the shape.
Is a California king bigger than a king?
No. A California king has slightly less total sleeping surface than a king. It is only “bigger” in length. For legroom the California king wins by 4 inches; for elbow room across the bed, the king wins by 4 inches.
Who should pick a California king
- Tall sleepers. The Sleep Foundation recommends the California king for anyone over 6 feet tall, particularly back and stomach sleepers who lie fully extended. Side sleepers curl up and often do fine on either size.
- Pet owners. The extra length gives a dog or cat room at the foot of the bed.
- Narrow rooms. Losing 4 inches of width can make a long, narrow bedroom easier to walk around.
Who should pick a standard king
- Couples who want width. Two sleepers get 38 inches each instead of 36 (our math).
- Families who share the bed with small children.
- Anyone who wants easy bedding. King sheets, toppers and protectors are the more common size.
Room size and clearance
The Sleep Foundation suggests leaving about 24 inches between each side of the bed and the walls, and up to 36 inches or more for a roomier feel. Remember that the frame, not the mattress, sets the footprint. Using the Rove Concepts Harper frame below as an example (our math, 24 inches on both sides and at the foot):
- Harper King frame (88.2 in wide x 95.3 in deep): about 136 in of wall to wall width (11 ft 4 in) and about 119 in of length from the headboard wall (9 ft 11 in).
- Harper Cal King frame (84.3 in wide x 99.2 in deep): about 132 in of width (11 ft) and about 123 in of length (10 ft 3 in).
Nightstands and dressers add to that. Instead of repeating their measurements here, see our guides to nightstand height and dresser dimensions, then sketch the whole wall before you order.
Bedding: California king sheets do not fit a king
Fitted sheets are cut to the mattress. A California king fitted sheet is made for 72 x 84 inches, so on a king it is 4 inches too narrow; a king fitted sheet on a California king is 4 inches too short (our math from the standard sizes). Buy sheets, mattress protectors and toppers that name your exact size. The Sleep Foundation also notes that California king frames, box springs, sheets and other bedding tend to have fewer options and cost more than the king equivalents, so budget for that if you go long.
California king bed frame sizes: Rove Concepts beds we sell
Most of the Rove Concepts beds we list come in Queen and King only. Four offer a Cal King option. The frame dimensions below are from the size diagrams on each bed’s roveconcepts.com page (width x depth x height):
| Bed | King frame | Cal King frame | Our King or Cal King price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ophelia Bed (also Full, Queen) | 81.5 x 93.3 x 34.3 in | 77.5 x 97.2 x 34.3 in | $2,616.67 |
| Angelo Bed | 122 x 87 x 41 in | 118 x 90.6 x 41 in | $2,372.33 |
| Harper Bed | 88.2 x 95.3 x 31.1 in | 84.3 x 99.2 x 31.1 in | $2,372.33 |
| Porter Bed | 93 x 93.1 x 33.5 in* | 89 x 97.6 x 33.5 in* | $2,596.33 |
Prices are for the Modern Felt Alesund finish; other finishes vary. *Porter widths are as drawn with one side extension attached.
Each Cal King frame is about 4 inches narrower and 4 inches deeper than the King. The Angelo’s headboard makes it far wider than the mattress (122 inches on the King), so measure the headboard wall. The Ophelia has the slimmest footprint.
How our prices compare with buying direct from Rove
On roveconcepts.com today, the King and Cal King add the same upcharge to each bed, and Rove’s regular prices for these sizes work out to about the same as ours (our math from Rove’s listed base prices and size upcharges). Rove members pay much less: Rove’s pages show members saving 40%, for example a Queen Angelo or Harper at $1,343 member versus $2,239 regular. If you plan to buy a Rove membership, buying direct will likely cost less. Rove charges a flat $159 standard shipping fee on orders up to $5,000 (see Rove’s store policy and refund policy); our orders of $999 or more ship free by freight. We are an authorized Rove Concepts dealer. For returns with us, see our return and refund policy. Before ordering a Cal King, call us to confirm current availability of that size.

Frequently asked questions
Is a California king bigger than a king?
Only in length. A California king is 72 x 84 inches and a king is 76 x 80 inches, so the king is wider and has slightly more total surface (6,080 vs 6,048 square inches).
California king vs king bed size: which fits a smaller room?
A narrow room often suits a California king because it is 4 inches slimmer. A short room suits a king because it is 4 inches shorter. Measure the frame, not just the mattress.
Will California king sheets fit a king bed?
Not properly. A California king fitted sheet is 4 inches narrower than a king mattress, and a king fitted sheet is 4 inches shorter than a California king. Buy bedding labeled for your exact size.
Can I put a California king mattress on a king bed frame?
No. A California king bed frame is built for a 72 x 84 inch mattress; a king frame for 76 x 80. The mattress would hang over the end or leave a gap at the sides. On the Rove beds above, the King and Cal King are separate frame sizes, so choose the size that matches your mattress.
