Dresser Dimensions: Standard Sizes, Depth and Height

Dresser dimensions come down to three numbers: width, depth and height. Most dressers are 30 to 74 inches wide, 18 to 24 inches deep and 30 to 50 inches tall, according to the planning ranges published by Dimensions.com. That range is wide because “dresser” covers everything from a small three drawer chest to a 62 inch double dresser. This guide breaks the sizes down by type using real measurements from dressers we sell, then covers how much room you need in front for the drawers, how a dresser fits with your bed and nightstands, and how to make sure it gets through the door.

Standard dresser size by type

There is no single legal standard, but dressers fall into clear groups. The examples below are taken from the listed dimensions on our product pages (width x depth x height).

Type Typical shape Example we sell W x D x H (in)
Single (3 drawer) dresser Narrow, waist high 31 inch Black Wood Three Drawer Dresser 31 x 16 x 30
Double (6 drawer) dresser Two columns of drawers, waist high 59 inch Light Gray Six Drawer Double Dresser 59 x 19 x 32
Wide dresser Long, low and deep Rove Concepts Asher Wide Dresser 62 x 18.1 x 34
Low dresser (doubles as media unit) Under waist height 45 inch White Six Drawer Double Dresser 44.5 x 15.75 x 26.5

Lingerie chest Very narrow, tall 23 inch Five Drawer Lingerie Chest 22.5 x 15.75 x 43

6 drawer dresser dimensions

The 6 drawer double dresser is a popular choice for a main bedroom. In our catalog they run from about 44.5 to 62 inches wide. The budget fabric drawer versions are 44.5 inches wide and 15.75 inches deep, while full wood versions like the 59 inch HomeRoots double dresser are 59 x 19 x 32. If you want a 6 drawer dresser to anchor a queen or king bedroom, plan on 59 to 62 inches of wall.

How deep is a dresser?

Most dressers are 16 to 20 inches deep. Dimensions.com gives 18 to 24 inches as the overall range. Every Rove Concepts dresser we list is 18 to 19 inches deep, and the slimmer HomeRoots pieces are 15.75 to 16 inches. A shallower dresser saves floor space, but the drawers are also shorter front to back, so check that folded sweaters will fit. Our Asher listing gives the inner drawer size as 27.7 inches wide, 14.7 inches deep and 5.6 inches high, which is a useful reference point for what an 18 inch deep case holds inside.

Dresser height: low, standard and tall

  • Low (26 to 30 inches): works under a window or as a TV stand. The Rove Concepts Hunter Wide Dresser is 30.1 inches tall in its 48 inch size.
  • Standard (30 to 34 inches): roughly waist high, which is comfortable for a mirror on top. The Rove Concepts Vienna Dresser is 60 x 18 x 32.
  • Tall (43 to 50 inches): chests and lingerie chests. The tops are too high for a mirror, but they fit narrow walls.

How much clearance do dresser drawers need?

A drawer has to open fully and you have to stand in front of it. Dimensions.com breaks this into a drawer zone of 16 to 20 inches and an 18 inch standing zone, and recommends 42 to 48 inches of clearance in front of a dresser (a total zone of 62 to 72 inches including the dresser itself). That is the comfortable target. As a bare minimum, Hunker says to allow at least 2 feet of walking space in front of a dresser.

Our math for a typical layout: an 18 inch deep dresser plus 42 inches of clearance needs about 60 inches (5 feet) from the wall to the next obstacle, such as the foot of the bed. If you only have 3 to 4 feet, choose a shallower dresser or put a tall chest on a side wall instead.

Fitting a dresser with your bed and nightstands

Start with the mattress. The Sleep Foundation lists a queen at 60 x 80 inches, a king at 76 x 80 and a California king at 72 x 84. The frame will usually be a few inches larger, so check the bed’s own listing (our Rove Concepts beds compared post has frame sizes for the Ophelia, Mikkel and Kaye).

  • Dresser opposite the bed: a 60 to 62 inch dresser lines up visually with a queen and sits comfortably inside the width of a king. Use the clearance math above between the dresser front and the foot of the bed.
  • Dresser on the same wall as the bed: add up the pieces. Our math: a queen (60 inches) plus two Vienna Nightstands at 24 inches each is 108 inches before frame width and gaps. A 31 inch wide tall chest beside that needs about 12 feet of wall in total.
  • Height balance: most of the Rove nightstands we list are 18 to 23 inches tall and dressers are 30 inches and up, so the dresser will always read taller. Matching finishes, like the Vienna dresser with the Vienna nightstand, ties them together. See our nightstand height guide for bed height matching.

Will the dresser fit through the door?

Dressers are easier than sofas because they are boxes, but they are heavy and many arrive assembled. The Rove Concepts Vienna and Georgio listings say no assembly is required, and the Vienna ships in a wooden crate (tools recommended for unboxing). Several HomeRoots and Benzara pieces we list, including the 59 inch double dresser and the Onira chest, require assembly, so they ship in smaller boxes.

  1. Measure the door opening with the door open, plus any tight hallway turns or stair landings.
  2. Compare against the dresser’s smallest two dimensions. An 18 inch deep, 32 inch tall dresser can usually be carried through a standard doorway on its side, but a 62 inch length has to make every turn.
  3. Remove drawers before carrying to cut the weight.

Our will a couch fit through my door guide walks through the same measuring method for hallways and stairs.

Rove Concepts dresser prices: buying from us vs direct

We are an authorized Rove Concepts dealer, and our prices on Rove dressers match Rove’s regular prices: for example $1,959 for the Asher and the Vienna, and $1,455 for the 48 inch Hunter. To be plain about it, Rove Concepts members pay less buying direct. When we checked Rove’s own pages, the Asher Wide Dresser showed $1,959 regular and $1,175 for members, and the Vienna Dresser showed the same split. If you already have or plan to buy a membership, direct is likely cheaper; our Rove membership math post helps you decide. Buying from us gets you free freight shipping on orders of $999 or more ($200 flat below that).
