Dresser vs Chest of Drawers: Size, Storage and Fit

Dresser vs chest of drawers comes down to shape. A dresser is wide and low, roughly waist high, and is the piece you put a mirror on or above. A chest of drawers is narrow and tall, so it stacks its drawers vertically and takes up less floor. Merriam-Webster defines a chest of drawers simply as “a piece of furniture designed to contain a set of drawers,” and one of its definitions of a dresser is “a chest of drawers or bureau with a mirror.” So every dresser is a chest of drawers, but in a store the two names mean different shapes.

Dresser vs chest of drawers: the core difference

Retailers, including us, use the names like this:

  • Dresser: drawers arranged side by side in two or more columns, a long flat top and a height around 30 to 36 inches. The top can hold a mirror, lamp or TV.
  • Chest (tall chest, chest of drawers): usually one column of four to six drawers, about 29 to 32 inches wide and 45 to 50 inches tall. The top is too high for a mirror.

Our own listings show the split clearly. The Benzara Tory collection sells both shapes in the same finish: the Tory Wide Dresser is 56.75 inches wide and 35.5 inches tall with six drawers, and the Tory Tall Dresser Chest is 29.25 inches wide and 47.87 inches tall with five. The dresser listing also notes a matching mirror sold separately.

Types of dressers and chests

Double dresser

The standard bedroom dresser: two columns of drawers, usually six to eight in total. For size ranges by type, see our dresser dimensions guide.

Tall chest and highboy

A single stack of drawers. Merriam-Webster defines a highboy as “a tall chest of drawers with a legged base,” which is the traditional, more formal version.

What is a lingerie chest?

A lingerie chest is the slimmest kind of chest: very narrow, fairly tall, with several shallow drawers sized for small folded items, socks and accessories. The HomeRoots 23 inch Five Drawer Lingerie Chest is 22.5 inches wide, 15.75 inches deep and 43 inches tall.

Gentleman’s chest

A gentleman’s chest is usually a tall chest with doors on the upper part that hide shelves or trays, and drawers below. We do not currently list one.

Floor footprint vs wall height

A dresser spreads storage along the wall; a chest stacks it upward. Our math from the Tory listings:

  • Tory Wide Dresser: 56.75 x 16.5 inches, about 6.5 square feet of floor.
  • Tory Tall Dresser Chest: 29.25 x 16.25 inches, about 3.3 square feet of floor.

The chest uses roughly half the floor and frees 27.5 inches of wall, but has one fewer drawer.

  • Choose a dresser if you want a mirror or TV surface, have a long open wall, and need the most drawer space.
  • Choose a chest if wall width is short (between a door and a corner, beside a window), or the floor in front is tight.

Tall dresser vs wide dresser: real sizes from our store

Sizes and prices below come from our product listings (width x depth x height, inches). Prices are listed at the time of writing and can change.

HomeRoots Five Drawer Lingerie Chest Lingerie 5 (fabric) 22.5 x 15.75 x 43 $142.99

Check drawer interiors and depth. The Roso chest lists each of its five drawers at 26.25 inches wide, 13 inches deep and 4 inches high inside, better for tees than bulky sweaters. Depth runs from 15.75 inches on the HomeRoots pieces to 20.25 inches on the Bette.

Dresser vs chest for a small bedroom

In a small bedroom the limit is usually walkway space, so a tall chest is often the better fit:

  • Measure the open wall first. If you have less than about 45 inches between a door frame and a corner, a 29 to 32 inch chest fits where most double dressers will not.
  • Measure the space in front. Our dresser dimensions guide covers clearance; a 15.75 or 16 inch deep piece leaves more walkway.
  • Use a lingerie chest for gaps. At 22.5 inches wide, the HomeRoots lingerie chest can fill the space beside a closet.
  • Want a mirror? Hang it on the wall above a chest or on a door instead of buying a wide dresser just to hold one.

Pairing a dresser and a chest

Many bedrooms use both: the dresser opposite the bed with a mirror, and a chest on a side wall for extra drawers. This is also how most 5 piece bedroom sets are built, as our guide to what comes in a bedroom set explains. Matching collections make it easy: the Tory wide dresser and tall chest together come to $1,242.09 at the listed prices, which also clears our $999 free freight shipping threshold (orders under $999 ship for a flat $200). If you need hanging space rather than more drawers, compare an armoire instead; see our armoire vs wardrobe guide.

Anchor any dresser or chest to the wall

Tall chests have a higher center of gravity than low dressers, but both can tip if a child climbs open drawers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It campaign says “Anchoring all furniture with drawers, doors, and shelves to the wall prevents tip-over injuries and deaths.” It also says to tug on the straps to confirm everything is secure.

Under the federal rule that followed the STURDY Act, CPSC’s clothing storage unit guidance covers free standing units at least 27 inches tall, at least 30 pounds and with at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage, manufactured after September 1, 2023. Covered units are tested with loaded drawers, on carpet, with a 60 lb test weight on an open drawer, and an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096 must be packaged with the product. Even so, install the anchor. Our Roso chest listing, for example, says it includes a tip-over restraint device and meets ASTM F2057.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chest of drawers the same as a dresser?

Technically a dresser is a type of chest of drawers. In stores, “dresser” means a wide, low piece that can hold a mirror, and “chest” means a narrow, tall one.

Chest vs dresser: which holds more?

Usually the dresser, because it has more drawers. The Tory chest has one fewer drawer than its matching dresser but uses about half the floor.

What is a lingerie chest used for?

Small folded items like underwear, socks and accessories. It is the narrowest chest style, about 22 to 24 inches wide, so it fits gaps a regular chest cannot.

Is a tall dresser or a wide dresser better for a small bedroom?

A tall chest usually works better when wall width or walkway space is tight. A wide dresser is better when you have a long wall and want a mirror or TV on top.

Do I need to anchor a dresser?

Yes. CPSC’s Anchor It campaign recommends anchoring all furniture with drawers to the wall, whether it is a low dresser or a tall chest.
