An executive desk is a large desk built to anchor a private office: a wide top, drawer pedestals on one or both sides, often a file drawer, and a finish meant to look good from the visitor’s side. To choose one, measure the room first, decide whether you need a straight desk or an executive desk with return (an L shape), then pick the material and storage that match how you work. Below we use the real specs of the executive desks we sell.
What makes an executive desk different
There is no official standard, but most executive desks share these traits:
- Width. Our executive listings run from 51 to 66 inches wide for straight desks, wider than a typical home office desk.
- Pedestals. Drawer stacks that support the top. A double pedestal desk has drawers on both sides with knee space in the middle; a single pedestal desk has one stack and a leg or panel on the other side.
- Storage. Expect several drawers, and on larger models a file drawer or locking drawer.
- A finished front. Many executive desks have a closed front panel (often called a modesty panel) so visitors do not look at your knees and cables.
Our desk dimensions guide covers standard width, depth, height and knee clearance in detail, so this guide focuses on the choices that are specific to an executive setup.
Executive office desk size: fit the desk to the room
Measure the wall where the desk will go, then account for the chair, the door, and any credenza behind you:
- Chair room behind the desk. You need space to roll the chair back and stand up without hitting a wall, a radiator or a credenza. Push your current chair back as you normally would and measure that distance.
- Visitor side. Leave room for guest chairs in front of the desk.
- Door swing. Open the office door fully and mark where it lands.
- Delivery path. Measure doorways, hall corners and stairs.
Placement is partly about how the room feels. In an office layout article from Lamps Plus, a designer and a feng shui consultant suggest placing the desk so you can see the door when seated and sitting with your back to a solid wall rather than a window.
Executive desk with return or L shape
A return is a shorter section attached at a right angle to the main desk, creating an L and a second work surface, so the computer can sit on the return while the main top stays clear for meetings.
Choose a return if you use a large monitor setup or want the computer off to the side. Stick with a straight desk if the room is narrow or you plan to add a credenza behind you. The L shaped desks section of our desk dimensions guide lists typical overall sizes.
In our current executive range, the L-Shaped Executive Desk with LED Light and Cable Management, 2.2 m, Black ($2,152.99) is the L shaped option. Its listing describes a cable box, hidden LED lighting and a height adjustment feature. The listing does not give a full depth, height range or weight, so call us for the complete dimensions before you order. A 2 m version ($2,094.99) is also listed.
Solid wood vs veneer vs engineered wood and steel
“Wood desk” can mean several different builds:
- Solid wood with veneer. The Dauphin desks list kiln-dried solid ash hardwood together with wood veneer laminated on MDF. That mix gives real wood where it matters and a stable, flat panel for large surfaces.
- Hardwood, MDF, particle board and veneer. The Benzara 66 inch desk lists Asian hardwood, MDF, particle board and veneer, with English dovetail construction front and back.
- Manufactured wood on a steel base. The HomeRoots pedestal desks use a manufactured wood top with a steel frame. They are lighter and lower in price, with a modern look rather than a traditional one.
- Particle board. The L shaped desks list particle board (and MDF on the 2.2 m model).
Choose based on the look you want, how often the desk will be moved, and your budget.
Storage: drawers, file space, keyboard tray and power
Think about what will live in the desk, then check these features:
- Drawer count and slides. The Dauphin desks list five soft-close drawers on metal slides. The Benzara lists 45 mm full extension ball bearing glider tracks.
- File and locking storage. The Benzara 66 inch desk lists one locking cabinet and one file cabinet with an adjustable shelf.
- Keyboard tray. The Benzara includes a keyboard drawer, which keeps the main top clear for paperwork.
- Built-in power. The Benzara lists 2 AC and 2 USB outlets built in, and the L shaped desk lists a cable box. Either cuts down on cords across the floor.
If you want more storage behind you, the Stigham Burnished Oak 5-drawer Credenza with Hutch ($2,563.99) lists 66 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 78.25 inches high, in engineered wood with 2 AC and 2 USB outlets, a hutch with glass door cabinets and adjustable shelves.

Frequently asked questions
What size is an executive desk?
Based on their listings, the straight executive desks we sell run 51 to 66 inches wide. The listings that label each dimension show depths of 23.25 to 24 inches and heights of 29.75 to 31.25 inches.
What is an executive desk with return?
It is a main desk with a shorter side section attached at a right angle, forming an L.
Is solid wood better than veneer for an executive desk?
Not always. Veneer over MDF stays flat on wide tops, while solid wood can be refinished. Many quality desks, like the Dauphin, combine solid wood with veneer.
What executive office desk size works for two monitors?
A wider and deeper top helps. Our desk dimensions guide covers sizing for two monitors.
