Fire Glass Colors: How to Choose a Look

The best fire glass colors are the ones that suit your fire feature when it is off, not only when it is lit. During the day you see the glass as a colored bed sitting in the table; at night you mostly see flame light bouncing off it. A good pick works in both and suits your table, patio stone and house. For quantity, fill depth and cleaning, see the guides linked below.

How fire glass colors look lit vs unlit

Fire glass is tempered glass sold in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes, and some of it has a reflective coating, according to the Wikipedia entry on fire glass. That coating is what changes the look most between day and night.

  • Daytime, unlit: you see the base color. Dark glass (black, charcoal, smoke) reads like polished stone. Light glass (clear, white frosted, champagne) reads bright and shows dust and soot sooner.
  • Dusk and night, lit: the flame becomes the light source. Reflective and clear glass pick up the flame and sparkle; dark matte glass stays in the background and lets the flame stand out by contrast.

The practical test: look at a sample in full sun and again after dark next to a lit burner before committing to a whole bed.

Reflective fire glass colors vs regular glass

Firegear describes reflective glass as having “high shine and sparkle,” says it “enhances flame visibility, especially at night,” and recommends it in a thin layer on top (Firegear fire media guide). Regular tempered glass has more of a solid, gem look. We compare the two in more detail in our lava rock vs fire glass guide, so here is just the color angle:

  • Reflective colors with a mirrored side, such as charcoal or dark grey, look dark by day and flash silver at night.
  • Reflective warm tones like champagne, light brown, bronze or golden add a warm cast that pairs with wood decking and tan pavers.
  • Reflective cool tones like azure or aqua read crisp and modern.

Fire glass color ideas by table, stone and house

Fire glass has the biggest impact when it either matches or deliberately contrasts with the surface around the burner. Firegear notes that the wide color range lets you match existing decor or patio furniture (Firegear on fire glass). A few combinations that work:

Your setting Glass that blends in Glass that contrasts
Dark concrete or charcoal table Black, charcoal, smoke Clear, white frosted, aqua
Light grey or white concrete Clear, mist, white frosted Black, cobalt or azure blue
Brown wicker or wood tones Bronze, amber, light brown Clear or champagne
Pool deck or coastal patio Aqua, azure, clear Black or dark grey
Warm brick or tan pavers Amber, golden, copper tones Charcoal or smoke

If you are still choosing the table itself, our fire pit table materials guide covers the finishes. Prism Hardscapes says its concrete fire features come in six color and finish options (Prism Hardscapes FAQ), so table and glass color can be planned together.

Our outdoor fire glass colors

For gas fire pits and tables, the Prism Hardscapes 1/4 inch metallic fireglass comes in 10 lb bags and is described as melt proof fire glass media for outdoor fire features. Each color was listed at $56 at the time of writing:

Mist, Aqua and Bronze are also available. See the full range on our Prism Hardscapes brand page. Some tables ship with media already. The Direct Wicker Brown Wicker Oval Fire Pit Table lists 7 kg of glass in its accessories but does not name the color, so ask us before ordering if color matters.

Mixing colors and blends

You do not have to pick one color. The Outdoor GreatRoom Company says you can mix and match shapes, sizes and colors of its tempered fire glass gems for a custom look (Outdoor GreatRoom fire glass gems at Classic Patio). Tips for blends:

  • Stay in one color family. Two or three related tones (clear, mist and azure, or bronze, amber and golden) look intentional. Many unrelated colors look busy.
  • Use one dark anchor. A dark base color with a lighter accent reads cleaner than equal parts of two bright colors.
  • Consider a sample set. For Amantii electric fireplaces, the Amantii 3 Colors of Decorative Fire Glass Media includes Clear, Suntea and Harvest Moon, listed at $179 at the time of writing, so you can try more than one look.

Base layer vs top layer

Firegear says fire glass pairs best with a lava rock base to maintain airflow, and suggests pairings such as a lava rock base with amber glass on top for a warm look, or a white pebble base with mirrored glass on top for a modern one (Firegear). It also notes that trough burners need smaller media in a thin layer, while pan style burners can take layering. Your burner manual has the final word on what goes over the burner; for fill depth see our lava rock vs fire glass guide.

How glass size and shape change the look

Fire glass is made as beads, diamonds, cubes and rounded pebbles, in sizes from about 1/4 to 1 inch, and the shattered (crushed) form is often reflective on one side and colored on the other (Wikipedia).

Note: the Amantii listings describe these as media for Amantii electric fireplaces. For electric fireplace media choices, see fire glass vs log set for an electric fireplace.

Does fire glass change the flame color?

None of the manufacturer or retailer pages we read claim that glass color changes the color of the gas flame itself. What changes is what you see around it: Firegear says fire glass reflects flame movement, and Outdoor GreatRoom describes its glass giving the table an ember like glow. Colored glass tints that reflected light; the flame itself stays the same.

Fading, soot and discoloring

Wikipedia notes the glass itself is unchanged by the fire but collects dust and black soot. Firegear warns that inexpensive media may discolor or break down, so buying quality media matters more than the bag price. Soot is easier to spot on clear, white and light reflective glass than on black and charcoal. If your glass is darkening, our how to clean fire glass guide covers cleaning and when soot points to a burner problem. Gas work belongs to a licensed pro, and local code has the final word.

Frequently asked questions

What fire glass colors look best at night?

Reflective and clear glass show the most sparkle after dark because they bounce flame light. Firegear says reflective glass enhances flame visibility, especially at night.

What are some easy fire glass color ideas for a grey concrete table?

Smoke, black or charcoal blend in. Clear, mist or azure give contrast.

Are reflective fire glass colors worth it?

If you mostly use the fire after dark, reflective glass adds shine. Firegear suggests it as a thin top layer, which keeps the cost down.

Can I mix fire glass colors?

Yes. Outdoor GreatRoom says its glass can be mixed and matched. Stick to one color family and pre mix a small batch.
