How Long Do Gas Fire Pits Last? Parts and Warranty

How long do gas fire pits last? There is no single number, because a gas fire pit is a set of parts that wear at different rates. The enclosure, whether GFRC concrete, cast aluminum or wicker over an aluminum frame, can outlast the gas parts if it is covered and drained. The burner, ignition, hose and regulator age first, and most can be replaced. The best clue to how a maker expects each part to hold up is its warranty, which often splits coverage by component.

How long do gas fire pits last? Think part by part

None of the manufacturer documents we checked give a lifespan in years for a whole fire pit. What they do give is warranty coverage by part. HPC Fire’s FPPK insert manual is a good example. For residential use it lists 3 years on electronics and the gas valve, 2 years on the pilot assembly, and 5 years on the stainless steel pan, fire ring and valve box. For commercial use, each drops to 1 year. Simple steel parts get the longest coverage.

Fire pit burner lifespan by material

Most fire pits we carry use stainless steel burners. Every Prism Hardscapes bowl in the table below lists a stainless steel burner insert, and the Direct Wicker and Patio Resorts tables list stainless burners too. Stainless resists rust well but is not immune: salt air and pool chemicals can stain or pit it, and listings rarely state the grade. Brass burners also turn up in some log sets and kits. Painted or plain steel parts are the ones to watch most closely for rust, especially when they sit in wet media. If a burner shows holes or warping, replace it with the specified part; HPC’s manual says a damaged fire ring must be replaced with the one the manufacturer specifies.

Ignition: match lit vs electronic

A match lit key valve has the fewest parts to fail. Several Prism Hardscapes models use one. Electronic and push button systems add an igniter, batteries and, on flame sensing kits, a thermocouple. The Patio Resorts Paris table lists a battery powered push button spark ignition, with batteries sold separately. HPC recommends brushing soot off the thermocouple about every six months. If your pit will not stay lit, see our gas fire pit troubleshooting guide.

Hoses and regulators

HPC’s manual says the hose should be inspected before each use and replaced with the manufacturer’s specified hose if it shows excessive abrasion, wear or damage. It also calls for a leak test at installation, every year, and each time a cylinder is connected or a gas part is replaced.

Emerson, which makes Fisher LP gas regulators, says in its LP-32 regulator inspection bulletin (“Inspecting LP-Gas Regulators: What to Look For”) that it recommends most regulators be replaced at 15 years from the date of manufacture, that coastal installations may need replacement sooner, and that flooded regulators must be replaced. That guidance is written for propane system regulators, not fire pit hose regulators specifically. Gas work is a job for a licensed pro, and local code has the final word.

Media matters too: porous lava rock holds rain water and keeps the burner pan damp, so dry it out when water collects.

Enclosure materials in our catalog

Warranty is shown as stated in each listing. Prices are listed at the time of writing.

Fire pit Enclosure Burner and ignition Warranty in listing Price
Prism Hardscapes Pebble 56″ Natural (propane) Glass fiber reinforced cement (GFRC) Stainless burner insert, key valve, match lit 2 year limited $2,954
Prism Hardscapes Rotondo 48″ Cafe (propane) GFRC Stainless burner insert, key valve, match lit 2 year limited $3,456
Prism Hardscapes Lombard 42″ Cafe (natural gas) GFRC Stainless burner insert, key valve, match lit 2 year limited $2,462
Patio Resorts Paris Rectangle Cast aluminum, powder coat Stainless burner, battery push button spark 10 years frame, 3 years finish $1,950.50
Direct Wicker Brown Oval Fire Pit Table PE rattan over aluminum frame Stainless fire system 12 months $1,258
Direct Wicker Gray 40,000 BTU Set Magnesium oxide and aluminum Stainless burner 1 year limited $599

GFRC bowls from Prism Hardscapes are heavy and hand finished, so expect color variation and some surface weathering. Cast aluminum does not rust; Patio Resorts backs its frame for 10 years but the powder coat finish for 3. For wicker, Direct Wicker’s care notes say to use water repellent covers with airflow so moisture does not build up. For more on choosing a pit, see our fire pit buying guide.

What shortens a gas fire pit’s life

  • Standing water. HPC calls for enclosures that drain, and says not to use a fire pit if any part has been under water; a qualified technician should replace submerged control parts.
  • No cover. HPC’s match lit kit manual makes covering the fire pit whenever it is not in use a warranty requirement. Our fire pit cover guide covers sizing.
  • Salt air and pool chemicals. Chlorides are hard on metal finishes. Near the ocean or a pool, rinse metal parts with fresh water now and then and store pool chemicals away from the pit.
  • Insects. HPC warns that spiders and insects can nest in the air intake of propane units and calls for periodic inspection by a qualified technician.
  • Modifications and wrong fuel. HPC says altering the product voids its warranty, and Prism’s listing says burning wood or unspecified fuels voids its warranty immediately.

Gas fire pit maintenance schedule

Part Common materials What wears Maintenance
Burner and fire ring Stainless steel, brass, painted steel Clogged ports, rust, warping Clean ports once a year, or sooner if flames look abnormal (HPC)
Burner pan and valve box Stainless steel Corrosion from standing water Keep drains and vents clear; cover when not in use
Ignition Key valve, spark igniter, thermocouple Batteries, soot Brush thermocouple about every six months (HPC); replace batteries as needed
Hose Flexible gas hose Abrasion, kinks, cracks Inspect before each use; replace with the specified part
Regulator and fittings Metal regulator, fittings Age, flooding, blocked vent Leak test yearly and at each cylinder change
Media Lava rock, fire glass Soot, trapped water Clean and dry; keep pilot and vents uncovered
Enclosure GFRC, cast aluminum, MgO, resin wicker Finish wear, UV Cover; follow the maker’s care guide

HPC also calls for inspection by a qualified service person at least annually.

How to read a fire table warranty

  • Coverage by part. A long frame warranty is not a burner warranty. Patio Resorts lists one year on fire pit accessories alongside 10 years on the frame.
  • Exclusions. Patio Resorts excludes normal wear, fading of hand applied finishes, freeze damage, harsh chemicals and wind damage. Prism excludes misuse and installation error.
  • Claim process. Prism replaces a confirmed defective unit FOB its facility; the buyer supplies proof of purchase and arranges shipping. HPC does not cover installation or maintenance labor.

Frequently asked questions

How long do gas fire pits last if they are covered?

HPC makes covering a warranty requirement for its match lit kits. A covered, well drained enclosure can outlast several hoses, batteries and igniters. No maker we checked states a total lifespan in years.

What is the typical fire pit burner lifespan?

It depends on material and moisture. HPC’s residential warranty covers its stainless steel pan and fire ring for 5 years, its longest term in that manual. Burners sitting in wet media wear fastest.

What does a fire table warranty usually cover?

Manufacturing defects, often with different terms by part. In our listings, Prism Hardscapes states 2 years limited, Patio Resorts 10 years on the frame and 3 on the finish, and Direct Wicker 12 months.

When should I replace the hose or regulator?

Replace a hose showing abrasion, cracks or damage, and any regulator or control that has been under water. Emerson recommends replacing most LP gas regulators at 15 years from manufacture. Let a licensed gas pro make the call.
