A glass door display refrigerator, often called a beverage merchandiser, is an upright commercial cooler with see-through doors and interior lighting so customers can spot a drink and grab it without asking. For most convenience stores, cafes, delis and office break rooms, the right choice comes down to four things: how many doors fit your wall, whether a swing or sliding door suits your aisle, the temperature range, and the plug the unit needs. This guide walks through each one using the specs printed on the merchandisers we list.
What a glass door display refrigerator is (and is not)
It helps to separate four types of commercial cold storage that often get lumped together:
- Glass door merchandiser: a tall, self-contained cooler built to sell. Glass doors, bright LED lighting and often a lighted sign panel on top. Customers open it themselves.
- Solid door reach-in: built for storage in a kitchen, not for display. Staff open it, and nobody needs to see inside from across the room.
- Open air merchandiser: no doors at all. A curtain of cold air holds the temperature, which makes grabbing fast; see the energy note below.
- Back bar cooler: a low, counter-height unit behind a bar for staff to reach. If that is your setup, our back bar cooler buying guide covers it in detail.
Sizing a beverage merchandiser by door count and cubic feet
Door count is the fastest way to narrow the field, because it sets the width of the cabinet. Here is how our commercial drink fridge options line up:
| Model | Doors | Door type | Capacity (listed) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEAGATE S20GDM | 1 | Swing, self-closing | 19.2 cu ft | $1,499 |
| ORIKOOL glass door merchandiser | 1 | Swing | 19.3 cu ft | $1,400.99 |
| SEAGATE S45GDM | 2 | Swing, self-closing | 44.7 cu ft | $2,199 |
| SEAGATE S45GDM-S | 2 | Sliding, spring loaded | 49 cu ft | $2,199 |
| 54 inch stainless display refrigerator | Not listed | Swing, self-closing | 49 cu ft | $2,983.99 |
| SEAGATE S70GDM | 3 | Swing, self-closing | 70 cu ft | $2,799 |
Cubic feet tells you volume, not how many bottles or cans you can face. For a realistic count, see our guide to beverage fridge can capacity. Before ordering, also measure the width, depth and height against your floor space and the doorways the unit must pass through. The 54 inch unit, for example, lists an assembled size of 54.13 x 32.87 x 83.11 inches, and the ORIKOOL lists 26.97 x 33.54 x 82.95 inches.
Swing vs sliding doors in a store aisle
Swing doors open wide for easy restocking. The 54 inch unit says its door opens to 222 degrees and closes itself once it is pushed below 90 degrees. The tradeoff is aisle space: an open swing door blocks the walkway in front of it.
Sliding doors stay inside the cabinet footprint, which helps in narrow aisles where shoppers pass close to the cooler. The SEAGATE Commercial Products S45GDM-S uses two spring loaded sliding glass doors, while the S45GDM is the swing door version at the same price.
Temperature range for drinks
Check the stated range before you buy, especially if you plan to stock sandwiches or dairy next to drinks. Listed ranges on our units include:
- ORIKOOL 19.3 cu ft: 32 to 44 degrees F with a CAREL digital controller and automatic defrost every 6 hours.
- 54 inch stainless unit: 33 to 40 degrees F, also with a CAREL controller and 6 hour auto defrost.
- Open air 2 tier merchandiser: 35.6 to 50 degrees F.
The SEAGATE refrigerator listings do not state a temperature range, so ask us for the spec sheet if that number matters for your products. Follow your local health department for any food items you merchandise.
Lighting, signage, locks and other features
- LED lighting: every glass door refrigerator in the table above lists LED interior lighting.
- Signage: the ORIKOOL lists a customizable top panel for your logo, and the SEAGATE SGF-48 freezer lists a top lighted signage panel.
- Self-closing doors: listed on the SEAGATE S20GDM, S45GDM, S70GDM and the 54 inch unit. None of the listings mention a door ajar alarm, so do not assume one.
- Locks: the ORIKOOL lists a door lock with 2 keys, and the SGF-48 lists lockable doors.
- Casters: the SEAGATE units list locking casters, and the ORIKOOL lists 4 casters, two with brakes, which makes cleaning behind the cabinet easier.
- Refrigerant: the ORIKOOL, the 54 inch unit and the Migali models list R290.
Power, circuits and placement
Most of the refrigerators here run on standard 115V power. The SEAGATE S20GDM, S45GDM, S45GDM-S and S70GDM each list 115V/60/1-ph with a NEMA 5-15P plug. The Migali scratch and dent units list 115V, single phase, 15A with a NEMA 5-15P. The SEAGATE SGF-48 freezer is different: it lists a NEMA 5-20P plug, which needs a 20 amp receptacle.
A dedicated circuit for each merchandiser is a common recommendation, since a compressor sharing a circuit with other equipment can trip breakers. A licensed electrician and your local code have the final word on circuits, receptacles and placement. Our listings do not give clearance figures, so check the manufacturer manual for ventilation space around the cabinet before you build it into a tight spot.
Energy use and certifications
The SEAGATE listings state ETL Electrical, ETL Sanitation (NSF 7) and DOE compliance, and the ORIKOOL and 54 inch unit state ETL certification and DOE compliance. None of these listings claim ENERGY STAR certification. If efficiency is a priority, ENERGY STAR says certified commercial refrigerators and freezers are on average 20 percent more energy efficient than standard models, and that open air units are not eligible.
Refrigerator vs freezer merchandiser
A freezer merchandiser holds ice cream, frozen meals and ice, not chilled drinks. The SEAGATE SGF-48 lists 48 cu ft, two self-closing triple-pane glass doors, a 1 HP system with R-404a refrigerant and a price of $2,999.
The open air 2 tier merchandiser ($3,580.99, 12.7 cu ft) is a third route for grab-and-go food and drinks near a register.
Scratch and dent merchandisers
We also carry merchandisers titled as scratch and dent listings, such as the Scratch and Dent Migali C-49RM-HC two door at $2,295 and the Scratch and Dent Migali C-72RM-HC three door at $3,495. Ask us about condition before ordering. For more on matching other cold storage to your space, see wine fridge vs beverage fridge and our commercial kitchen equipment guide.
Buying checklist
- Pick door count from your wall width, then confirm cubic feet.
- Measure the floor spot, the path in and every doorway.
- Choose swing or sliding doors based on aisle width.
- Confirm the temperature range fits everything you will stock.
- Match the plug (5-15P or 5-20P) to your receptacle, with an electrician involved.
- Check the manual for ventilation clearance.
- Decide whether you need locks, signage or casters.
Frequently asked questions
What size glass door display refrigerator do I need?
Start with available wall width. A one door unit near 19 cu ft suits a cafe or office, two doors near 45 to 49 cu ft suit a small store, and three doors near 70 cu ft suit a full cooler wall.
Is a beverage merchandiser the same as a commercial drink fridge?
Mostly, yes. Both terms describe an upright glass door cooler for self-serve drinks. “Merchandiser” stresses display features like lighting and signage.
Can I plug a commercial drink fridge into a regular outlet?
Many units list a standard 115V NEMA 5-15P plug, but a dedicated circuit is often recommended, and some units, like the SGF-48 freezer, need a 5-20P receptacle. Have a licensed electrician confirm your setup.
Are sliding doors better than swing doors?
Sliding doors save aisle space, while swing doors open wider for stocking.
