Outdoor fireplace cost runs from a few hundred dollars for a small wood burning unit to $20,000 or more for a custom stone build. Lawn Love puts the national average at $3,000, with a typical range of $1,200 to $21,000. Fixr says most outdoor fireplace projects cost $1,500 to $8,000, while luxury custom builds can reach $50,000. Where you land depends on three choices: the type of unit, the fuel, and how much site work it needs.
This guide breaks the outdoor fireplace cost into price tiers and line items, then walks through a sample budget so you can plan before you call contractors.

For a covered patio without a gas line, the Amantii Panorama 50 in Deep XT ($3,599) and 60 in Deep XT ($4,199) are rated for indoor and covered outdoor use, with a 4,800 BTU supplemental heater. Our outdoor electric fireplace guide covers wiring and what “covered outdoor” means.
Outdoor fireplace installation line items
The unit is only part of the bill. Here is what else to price out.
- Base or slab. A 600 to 690 lb fireplace needs a level, solid surface. If you have no patio, Lawn Love lists a new patio at $2,290 to $6,420.
- Gas line. Bob Vila lists $15 to $25 per linear foot for a fireplace line and $4 to $12 per foot for trenching, depending on depth. Thumbtack lists $473 to $1,609 to supply a new gas line to an outdoor appliance.
- Gas fitter labor. Bob Vila and HomeAdvisor both put gas plumber rates at $45 to $200 per hour.
- Electrical. Needed for an electric unit, outlet or lighting. HomeAdvisor lists electricians at $50 to $100 per hour plus materials. The Cal Flame FRP-909-1 listing specifies battery powered electronic ignition.
- Permit. Fixr lists $50 to $500 for outdoor fireplace permits.
- Delivery and placement. We ship freight free on orders of $999 or more, and $200 flat below that. Plan for equipment or a crew to move a 600 lb unit from the truck to its final spot.
- Finish upgrades. Fixr lists surround stone at $40 to $75 per square foot and brick at $3 to $50 per square foot.

No patio? Add Lawn Love’s $2,290 to $6,420 for a new one. Prefer real stone over stucco? Add the $2,450 factory upgrade.
Propane vs natural gas running cost
Propane can skip the buried gas line but adds tank refills, while natural gas needs plumbing up front. Our outdoor gas fireplace guide covers fuel choice, BTU, clearances and base requirements in detail. Note that some listings ship as propane and need a conversion kit or a certified technician for natural gas.
What drives custom masonry cost
Custom builds land at the top of the range for a few reasons:
- Footing. Fixr notes that new masonry fireplace cost climbs when a new foundation must be poured to carry the weight.
- Chimney and surround. Fixr notes that luxury builds with chimneys, seating or full masonry surrounds can reach $50,000.
- Materials. Natural stone costs far more per square foot than stucco or concrete.
- Extras. Lawn Love lists pizza ovens, rotisseries, grill plates and smokers as add ons that raise the price.
Lawn Love describes the contractor kit as a middle path: a premade concrete framework you finish with your own stone or brick veneer.
Ways to keep outdoor fireplace cost down
- Place it close to the gas source. Every foot of line and trench adds cost.
- Use an existing patio if it can carry the weight. Ask a contractor to confirm.
- Pick the standard stucco finish. Stone is the most common upgrade.
- Get two or three quotes from licensed gas fitters with the unit’s spec sheet in hand.
- Consider a fire pit. Our outdoor fireplace vs fire pit guide compares heat, space and cost.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average outdoor fireplace cost?
Lawn Love puts the average at $3,000, with most projects between $1,200 and $21,000. Fixr says most outdoor fireplace projects run $1,500 to $8,000.
How much does an outdoor gas fireplace cost installed?
Our Cal Flame gas units run $5,300 to $7,477.92 before installation. Add a gas line at $15 to $25 per foot (Bob Vila), trenching, a permit and placement. Our 30 foot example comes to roughly $6,420 to $7,410 before placement.
Is a prefab outdoor fireplace cheaper than custom?
Usually. Lawn Love lists prefab units at $1,200 to $8,335 on average and custom builds at $6,000 to $21,000. A prefab also arrives finished, which cuts masonry labor.
Can I install the gas line myself?
We do not recommend it. Gas work belongs to a licensed gas fitter or plumber, and local code and permit rules have the final word on placement, pipe sizing and inspection. Electrical work for outlets or lighting belongs to a licensed electrician.
