Go Kart for Kids: Age, Size and Gas vs Electric

Buying a go kart for kids comes down to three numbers on the spec sheet: the manufacturer’s recommended age, the maximum rider weight, and the rider height the seat is built for. Get those right and the choice between gas and electric, or one seat and two, becomes much easier. This guide explains what each spec means, compares the MotoTec karts we sell side by side, and covers the safety gear and rules that come with them.

One point up front: every MotoTec kart in our range that lists an age recommends riders 13 and up, and MotoTec’s listings say adult supervision is required. These are not toddler ride-ons.

Go kart for kids: what age and size?

Recommended age

The manufacturer’s age rating reflects speed, power and the judgment needed to brake and steer. Treat it as a minimum, not a target. A responsible 13 year old who already rides bikes confidently is a different rider from a 13 year old who has never controlled a vehicle.

Maximum rider weight

Weight limits on our karts run from 120 lb to 400 lb. Staying under the limit protects the frame, brakes and drivetrain, and MotoTec notes that top speed and range are weight dependent. If your child is close to a kart’s limit now, they will outgrow it quickly.

Rider height

Some listings give a comfortable rider height. The Mud Kids karts fit riders up to about 63 inches, and the two-seat Mud XL is recommended for riders up to 67 inches. Taller kids need to be able to reach the pedals without their knees hitting the wheel.

Gas vs electric go kart for kids

Factor Gas Electric
Run time Refuel and keep riding Limited by battery, then hours to recharge
Noise Engine noise; check neighborhood rules Quiet
Maintenance Fuel, oil and engine upkeep Battery charging and care
Starting Pull start on our gas models Switch or key
Parent controls Not listed on our gas models Selectable speeds or parental speed control on some models

Electric karts suit backyards and families who want quiet rides and a way to limit speed while a new driver learns. Gas karts suit larger properties and longer sessions. Either way, two-stroke engines like the Sandman’s need oil premixed with the fuel, while four-stroke engines take straight gasoline with oil in the crankcase.

Best for a first kart: Mud Kids 98cc or Mud Kids Electric

The two Mud Kids models share a frame with a roll bar, seat belt, adjustable seat, kill switch, dual front and single rear hydraulic shocks, and a foot-operated hydraulic rear disc brake. The gas version uses a 98cc four-stroke engine that MotoTec lists as EPA and CARB approved for California sale. The electric version runs on four 12v 12ah sealed lead acid batteries and lists a 15 degree climbing angle. Both are built for riders up to about 63 inches and 150 lb.

Best for quiet backyards: Maverick

The Maverick adds turf-safe tires to help protect grass, key start, a battery meter, forward and reverse, three selectable speeds and a parking brake. MotoTec lists up to 40 minutes of ride time and a 4 to 5 hour charge from three 12v 12ah lead acid batteries. It has a full roll bar, netting and a chain guard. The listing does not give an age rating, so call us before buying for a younger rider.

Best for older teens and two riders: Mud XL 212cc

The Mud XL is the biggest kart we sell: two seats, a 212cc engine with a CVT, a four-point harness, a padded roll bar, independent front and dual rear shocks, and a listed top speed of 25 mph. The 400 lb limit and 67 inch rider height make it the one to buy if a parent wants to ride along or teens will share it.

Off Road 79cc and Off Road 48v

Both are single seat karts for 13 and up with roll cages, positraction and hydraulic brakes. The 79cc gas model has the lowest weight limit in the group at 120 lb, so it suits smaller teens. The 48v electric model lists a parental speed control and forward and reverse.

Sandman 49cc

The Sandman is the lightest kart here at 89 lb, with 9 inches of ground clearance, 8 inch knobby tires, a folding seat, a seat belt, a safety flag and a rear disc brake. It does not have a roll cage and its listing gives no age rating, so we see it as a better fit for older riders than for young beginners. It runs on a 32:1 fuel and oil mix and cannot be sold in California or Canada.

Safety gear and rules

  • Helmet every ride: MotoTec’s listings say to always wear a helmet and safety gear. Add gloves, closed shoes and eye protection.
  • Adult supervision: Required by the manufacturer on the Mud Kids, Mud XL and Off Road 79cc listings, and a good rule for every kart.
  • Private property only: These karts are built for off-road riding, not public streets. Check local rules on noise and where you can ride.
  • Set limits: Use lower speed settings while a new driver learns, and mark out a clear riding area away from roads, pools and people.
  • Pre-ride checks: Brakes, tire pressure, steering, seat belt and the kill switch before every session.

Ownership costs and support

MotoTec lists short parts warranties: 30 days on the Sandman, 60 days on the Mud Kids, Mud XL and Maverick, and 90 days on the Off Road models, and several listings advise that mechanical knowledge is helpful. We stock many MotoTec replacement parts, such as brake pedals, tie rods and chains, which keeps an older kart running. If you also have older kids on two wheels, our electric dirt bike size chart and MotoTec 72V battery replacement guide cover sizing and battery care.

Frequently asked questions

What age can a kid drive a go kart?

For the MotoTec karts we sell that list an age, the recommendation is 13 and up with adult supervision. Judge your own child’s experience and maturity too.

Is a gas or electric go kart better for kids?

Electric is quieter and some models let parents limit speed, which helps new drivers. Gas runs longer without recharging. Both need helmets and supervision.

How fast does a kids go kart go?

Most MotoTec listings say top speed depends on rider weight and do not give a figure. The Mud XL 212cc lists 25 mph. Ask us for details on a specific model.

Can an adult ride a kids go kart?

Only within the listed weight and height limits. The two-seat Mud XL takes up to 400 lb and riders up to 67 inches, so a parent can ride along.
