MotoTec 72V Battery Replacement Guide

A tired battery is the most common reason a MotoTec 72V dirt bike starts feeling slow, cutting out on hills or losing range after a season or two. The good news: on the Pro and Venom models the battery is a swappable pack, not a rebuild job. The catch is that MotoTec lists each 72V pack for one specific model, so the right part depends on your exact bike. This guide shows you how to confirm the battery is actually the problem, which pack fits your bike, and how to get the most life out of the new one.

Which 72V battery fits my MotoTec?

Match the battery to the bike’s motor wattage, which is printed on the frame sticker, the original box and your order confirmation. The three 72V bikes use three different packs:

Your bike Replacement battery Matching charger
MotoTec 72V 5000W Pro Electric Dirt Bike 72V 30Ah Pro 5000W Battery 72V 6A 5000W Pro Lithium Charger
MotoTec 72V 8000W Pro Electric Dirt Bike 72V 35Ah 8000W Pro Battery 72V 8000W Pro Charger
MotoTec Venom 72V 30000W Electric Dirt Bike Venom 72V 50Ah Battery Venom 72V Charger

Same voltage does not mean same fit. The packs differ in capacity, and MotoTec does not list them as cross-compatible between models, so order the pack listed for your bike. If you are not sure which bike you have, call us at 866-777-2590 with the model on your sticker and we will confirm the part before you order.

Is it really the battery? Check these first

A new pack is the most expensive part on the bike, so rule out the cheap causes before you buy one.

  • Measure the voltage. A 72V lithium pack is 20 cells in series. Fully charged it should read about 84V on a multimeter, and it is essentially empty around 60V. A pack that comes off the charger reading well under 80V, or drops sharply the moment you open the throttle, is on its way out.
  • Test the charger. With the charger plugged into the wall but not the bike, the output should read slightly above 84V. No output or a very low reading means the charger has failed, not the battery. A replacement charger costs a fraction of a pack.
  • Check the connections. Loose or burnt battery leads cause cutouts that feel exactly like a weak battery. Inspect the battery wires and charging port for melted plastic or corrosion.
  • Rule out the gauge. If the bike rides normally but the display reads empty, the battery meter may be the fault, not the cells.
  • Rule out the controller. Full voltage at the pack but no power at the wheel points to the controller or throttle. The 5000W Pro uses the 85A controller; the 8000W Pro uses the 150A controller.

Signs the battery is done

  • Range has dropped to half or less of what the bike did new.
  • The bike bogs down or shuts off under hard acceleration or on hills, then works again after a rest.
  • The pack will not hold a charge overnight while parked.
  • Any swelling, cracked casing, burning smell or heat while idle. Stop using it immediately and store it outdoors away from anything flammable.

How to swap the battery

  1. Turn the key off and disconnect the charger.
  2. Remove the seat and side panels to reach the pack. On the 5000W Pro the pack sits in a holder bracket; replace the bracket too if it is bent or cracked.
  3. Photograph the wiring, then unplug the main battery connector and the meter lead.
  4. Lift the old pack out. It is heavy, so lift with your legs and keep it upright.
  5. Seat the new pack, reconnect exactly as in your photo, and refit the panels.
  6. Give the new battery a full charge before the first ride.

Make the new pack last

  • Use the matching charger only. A charger for a different model can overcharge the pack or never fill it.
  • Do not store it empty. Lithium cells left fully drained can drop below the point where they will take a charge again.
  • Store it around half charged for the off season, somewhere cool and dry, and top it up every month or two.
  • Charge at room temperature. Let a hot pack cool down after a ride before charging, and avoid charging below freezing.
  • Keep it dry. Rinse the bike with a damp cloth, not a pressure washer, near the battery and electrics.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the 35Ah battery in my 5000W Pro for more range?

We do not recommend it. MotoTec lists the 35Ah pack for the 8000W Pro only, and fit, connector and controller compatibility with the 5000W Pro are not confirmed. Buy the pack listed for your exact model, or call us at 866-777-2590 before mixing parts.

How long does a MotoTec 72V battery last?

It depends on how hard and how often you ride and how you store it. Lithium packs lose capacity gradually with every charge cycle, and heat and storing the pack empty speed that up. Following the storage tips above is the best way to stretch the pack’s life.

Is a replacement battery covered by warranty?

Replacement parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty. See our warranty page for how claims work, and keep your order number with the bike.

Do you sell other MotoTec parts?

Yes. We carry more than 3,000 MotoTec products, including tires, wheels, brakes, controllers, throttles and body panels. Browse the full range on our MotoTec brand page, or read our battery and power guides for more on lithium care.
