A gun safe dehumidifier keeps the air inside a closed safe dry enough that steel parts do not rust and wooden stocks do not swell, split or grow mold. For most home safes the simplest answer is an electric heating rod sized to the safe, mounted low on the floor, paired with a cheap hygrometer so you can see the reading. Mesa Safe rates its rods at 100 cubic feet of coverage for the 12 inch model, 200 for the 18 inch and 300 for the 24 inch, which is more than the outside volume of either gun safe we list, so the practical choice usually comes down to which length fits the floor of your safe.
Why gun safes get humid in the first place
A safe is a sealed steel box. Whatever moisture gets in tends to stay in. Every time you open the door on a humid day, damp air moves in.
Temperature swings make it worse. When the steel walls cool overnight, the air right next to them cools too, its relative humidity climbs, and moisture can condense on metal surfaces. The National Park Service notes in its guidance on caring for metal objects that low temperatures usually raise relative humidity and the chance of condensation, and that seasonal swings in temperature and humidity can promote corrosion. Basements and garages see exactly those conditions. If your safe lives in the garage, it is worth reading our notes on garage floor tiles vs epoxy.
Best humidity for a gun safe
The goal is low and steady. NPS conservation guidance for metals says to keep relative humidity as low as practical, observes that steel will not rust below about 15 percent RH, and recommends no more than 35 percent RH to stop active corrosion in salt air environments. Its Conserve O Gram on caring for historic longarms adds an important point for firearm owners: guns combine wood, metal and sometimes plastic, each material reacts differently to humidity, and keeping the level constant matters as much as keeping it low.
Treat these as guidance, not hard rules:
- Keep readings consistently low, with no condensation or musty smell.
- In coastal areas, aim lower, in line with the NPS 35 percent ceiling for salt air.
- If you store fine wooden stocks, avoid big swings rather than driving the air as dry as possible.
Electric vs desiccant safe dehumidifier
Electric heating rods
An electric rod is a sealed tube with a low heat element inside. It warms the air near the bottom of the safe slightly. Warmer air holds more moisture, so relative humidity drops, and gentle convection keeps air moving. Mesa describes its MD-Series as made for tightly closed spaces with little or no ventilation, and lists gun safes and weapon storage as the main use on its MD-Series dehumidifier page.
- Pros: runs continuously, no recharging, nothing to remember once it is installed.
- Cons: needs a power cord routed into the safe, and it stops working during a power outage.
Rechargeable desiccant units
Desiccant units hold silica gel or a similar material that absorbs moisture. You recharge them outside the safe when they are full.
- Pros: no cord running into the safe, works anywhere, including safes with no power port.
- Cons: has a fixed capacity, so it needs regular recharging, and it does nothing once it is saturated.
Many owners use a rod as the main control and a desiccant canister as an outage backup. If you are planning for outages generally, our home backup power guide covers how to keep small loads like this running.
Dehumidifier rod length and safe size
Pick a rod that fits across the inside floor of the safe with room for the mounting brackets and cord, then check that its rated coverage meets or beats the interior volume. Here is how the Mesa lineup we carry compares, based on Mesa’s published product data:
| Model | Rod length | Mesa stated coverage | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesa MD12 | 12 in | 100 cu ft | Small to mid safes, document and jewelry safes with a narrow floor |
| Mesa MD18 | 18 in | 200 cu ft | Mid size gun safes and tall vaults |
| Mesa MD24 | 24 in | 300 cu ft | Wide gun safes and large vaults |
| Mesa MD36 | Largest in series | Confirm with us before ordering | Very wide safes and walk in style storage |
Mesa says each MD-Series kit includes the rod, a detachable cord and plug, two brackets and four screws, and carries a lifetime warranty against defects. Mesa’s published data for the MD36 was unclear when we checked, so call us to confirm the MD36 length and coverage before you buy it.
To estimate interior volume, multiply the inside width, depth and height in inches and divide by 1,728. Exterior dimensions give you an upper limit. Our 36 Gun Safe is listed at 25 x 30 x 55 inches assembled, under 24 cubic feet on the outside. The 40 Gun Safe is listed at 24 x 40 x 59 inches, under 33 cubic feet on the outside. Both are far below even the MD12’s rated coverage, so measure the interior floor width and pick the length that fits.
How to install a gun safe dehumidifier
Most gun safes and many fire rated vaults have a small pre drilled power port near the back or bottom for exactly this purpose. Follow your safe maker’s instructions, and never drill a fire rated safe without checking with the manufacturer.
- Remove the power port cover.
- Choose a spot on the floor or lowest shelf, since warmed air rises.
- Mount the rod with the supplied brackets so it is not touching gun stocks, cases, paper or fabric.
- Feed the detachable cord through the port and connect it to the rod.
- Plug in and check that the door closes without pinching the cord.
- Place a hygrometer on a middle shelf and check the reading after a day or two.
If you need a new outlet near the safe, use a licensed electrician and follow local code. Planning the whole garage wall? Our NewAge garage cabinets review covers layout ideas.
How to keep moisture out of a safe beyond the dehumidifier
- Use a hygrometer. It is the only way to know your setup is working.
- Raise the safe off bare concrete where your safe maker allows, or put down a sealed floor surface.
- Do not store damp gear. Let firearms, cases and holsters dry after a wet hunt or range day before they go back in.
- Wipe and lightly oil metal. NPS guidance recommends a light, non drying oil on moving parts and wiping fingerprints from metal.
The same approach applies to document and jewelry safes. Our 8.47 cu ft tall fireproof safe vault and 2.75 cu ft keypad fireproof jewelry safe hold paper and jewelry that also suffer in damp air. Always check local laws on firearm storage where you live.

Frequently asked questions
What size gun safe dehumidifier do I need?
Choose the longest rod that fits on the inside floor of your safe with room for brackets. Mesa rates its 12 inch rod at 100 cubic feet, so fit usually matters more than coverage.
Is an electric or desiccant safe dehumidifier better?
An electric rod is better for continuous, hands off control if your safe has a power port. A rechargeable desiccant is better for safes without power or as a backup during outages.
What is the best humidity for a gun safe?
Low and steady. NPS conservation guidance recommends keeping metal storage as dry as practical and no higher than 35 percent RH in salt air, while keeping humidity constant to protect wooden stocks.
Should a dehumidifier rod stay on all the time?
Yes. Electric rods are designed to run continuously at low heat. Turning one off lets humidity build back up.
Do all safe dehumidifier rods work the same way?
Electric safe dehumidifier rods work on the same principle: gentle, constant warmth near the floor of the safe. Mesa’s MD-Series is one option, available in several lengths to match your safe.
