Hardtop vs Soft Top Gazebo: Roofs, Snow and Cost

Hardtop vs soft top gazebo comes down to how long the structure stays up. A hardtop has a rigid steel, polycarbonate or resin roof built to stay up all year, often with a stated snow and wind rating. A soft top uses a polyester or canvas canopy that costs less but is generally not meant to carry snow, so it is seasonal shade. One honest note: nearly every gazebo we sell is a hardtop. We do not currently stock a classic fabric soft top gazebo, so for the soft side we compare the closest fabric covered products we carry.

Hardtop vs soft top gazebo at a glance

If you want one structure that handles rain, sun and winter without being taken down, buy a hardtop with a stated snow rating that suits your area. If you only need summer shade or something you can pack away, a fabric roof makes sense. For the broader question of an open beam roof versus a solid one, see our pergola vs gazebo guide.

Roof materials compared

Galvanized steel

Steel is the most common hardtop roof we sell. Most are double roofs: two tiers with a vent gap between them so hot air can escape. The 12×12 Hardtop Gazebo with Galvanized Steel Double Roof pairs that roof with an aluminum frame and lists snow pressure resistance of 22 lbs per square foot and wind resistance up to 50 mph. Curtains and netting are included.

Aluminum hardtop gazebo frames

When people search for an aluminum hardtop gazebo, they usually mean an aluminum frame under a steel roof. Aluminum does not rust. The Garden Hardtop Aluminum Gazebo uses 3 in x 3 in powder coated aluminum columns with a two tier galvanized steel roof and lists a snow load of 16.39 psf.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate panels let daylight through. The 10×12 Polycarbonate Double Roof Gazebo has a see-through two tier roof on an aluminum frame. Its listing gives no snow rating and says not to let snow accumulate on the roof, so treat polycarbonate models like this as three season structures unless the listing says otherwise.

Resin and steel

The 12×12 Hardtop Gazebo with Resin Roof stacks a 16mm resin lower roof under a galvanized steel upper roof. The listing claims a snow load of up to 35 lbs per square foot, wind resistance up to 60 mph, less rain noise and better insulation.

Polyester, canvas and PE fabric

Soft tops use woven fabric. Fabric is light, cheap to replace and easy to take down, but it sags under water and snow and wears out in strong sun faster than metal. The closest fabric roofed items we carry are the 20×40 Party Canopy Tent, which uses a 170gsm PE canopy on galvanized steel tubes, and the YardCraft EZShade Canopy, a Subrella fabric cover with aluminum components made for the YardCraft 10×12 Wood Pergola. Neither listing states a snow or wind rating.

Gazebo snow load and wind ratings

Snow is where the hardtop vs soft top gazebo decision is usually made. Ratings on our hardtop listings vary a lot, so compare numbers, not the word “hardtop”:

  • Resin and steel roof: up to 35 lbs per sq ft, 60 mph wind.
  • Steel double roof on aluminum: 22 lbs per sq ft, 40 to 50 mph wind depending on the model.
  • Aluminum frame, steel roof: 16.39 psf.
  • Fir wood gable roof: 5.12 psf, wind rating 7 to 8.
  • Polycarbonate roof: no snow rating; do not let snow build up.

Even a rated roof needs clearing in heavy storms. Wind ratings generally assume the gazebo is anchored as the instructions direct; our pergola vs gazebo guide covers anchoring in more detail. For a soft top, the safe habit is to remove the canopy before snow or high wind.

Lifespan and maintenance

A hardtop asks for little: clear snow and leaves, keep gutters open, check fasteners each season and wash the curtains. Steel roofs are powder coated or galvanized against rust, and aluminum frames do not rust at all. A soft top asks for more. Fabric fades and can tear, so plan on replacing the canopy at some point, and take it down for winter storage where you get snow.

Heat, light and noise

Solid steel gives the deepest shade. Several of our steel roof listings state UPF50+ sun protection, and the double roof vent lets heat escape. Polycarbonate brightens the space instead of darkening it. The party tent listing says its canopy blocks up to 97% of UV. Steel can be loud in heavy rain, which is one reason the resin model adds a resin layer under the steel.

Cost and assembly in our listings

At the time of writing, our hardtops start at $1,349.99 for the 12×12 Dual-Layer Steel Roof Gazebo and run past $3,400 for 14×24 models. Fabric tops are generally the cheaper buy, but expect to budget for replacement canopies over the years.

Many of our hardtop listings recommend 2 to 5 people and 3 to 6 hours, and the larger ones quote up to 6 to 8 hours. Most listings do not state a shipping weight, so plan for help to unload and carry long roof panels. Freight ships free on orders of $999 or more, so every gazebo in the table below ships free.

Which roof fits how you use it

Year round use

Pick a steel or resin hardtop with a stated snow load that suits your area. Curtains help block winter wind. If a heater goes under the roof, follow its manual for clearances; our patio heater buying guide helps you choose one.

Grill cover

Heat and smoke need room to escape under any roof. Keep the clearances in your grill manual, and if you are planning a full cooking area, see our outdoor kitchen cost guide. Against a house wall, the 10×14 Lean to Hardtop Gazebo lists a steel roof rated for wind gusts up to 40 mph.

Hot tub cover

A hardtop is the usual choice over a spa because it stays up in winter. The resin roof listing specifically mentions hot tubs. Our hot tub privacy ideas guide covers placement and cover lifter clearance.

Seasonal shade and events

A fabric roof suits summer only use, rentals and parties. The party tent accommodates up to 80 people per its listing and can be taken down when the season ends.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hardtop gazebo worth it over a soft top?

If you want the structure up all year or you get snow, usually yes. You skip canopy replacements and the seasonal take-down.

What gazebo snow load do I need?

Your local building department can tell you the design snow load for your area. Compare that with the rating on the listing, and clear heavy snow regardless.

Does an aluminum hardtop gazebo rust?

Aluminum frames do not rust. The steel roof panels on most models are galvanized or powder coated to resist rust, so touch up any scratches.

Can you leave a soft top gazebo up in winter?

Fabric canopies are generally not built to carry snow. Where it snows, take the canopy down and store it dry.

Most of our hardtop gazebos are listed under The Everything Depot, with pergola kits and canopies under YardCraft. Questions about sizing, snow ratings or delivery?
