How much does a wine cellar cost? It depends far more on cooling and construction than on the racks. HomeAdvisor’s 2026 cost guide (updated June 19, 2026) puts the national average for building a wine cellar at about $40,000, with most projects between $5,000 and $100,000 and room construction running roughly $300 to $600 per square foot. At the low end, a cabinet or a wall of racks costs a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Below we break down wine cellar cost by size, by component and by type, then show real racking prices per bottle from our own VintageView listings so you can budget the part you control most easily.
How much does a wine cellar cost by bottle capacity?
These ranges are from HomeAdvisor’s wine cellar cost guide, which ties capacity to room size:
| Capacity | Approximate space | Typical cost (HomeAdvisor) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 bottles | Small cabinet | $500 to $4,000 |
| 200 bottles | 10 sq ft | $7,000 to $15,000 |
| 500 bottles | 25 sq ft | $15,000 to $22,000 |
| 1,000 bottles | 50 sq ft | $26,000 to $32,000 |
| 2,000 bottles | 100 sq ft | $35,000 to $45,000 |
Notice the jump between 100 and 200 bottles. That is the point where you stop buying an appliance and start building a room: insulation, vapor barrier, a sealed door and a cooling system. HomeAdvisor’s overall storage figure is $5 to $75 per bottle of capacity.
Wine room cost: where the money goes
HomeAdvisor’s component ranges for a climate-controlled wine room:
| Component | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Through-the-wall cooling unit | $1,000 to $3,500 |
| Ducted cooling system | $3,000 to $10,000 |
| Split cooling system | $5,000 to $15,000 |
| Humidifier | $1,000 to $2,000 |
| Temperature and humidity controls | $100 to $3,500 |
| Insulation | $1.50 to $4 per sq ft |
| Door | $500 to $3,500 |
| Flooring | $1,500 to $5,000 |
| Lighting | $150 to $750 |
| Wine racks | $2 to $20 per bottle |
Cooling is the biggest decision
A through-the-wall unit is the cheapest of the three in HomeAdvisor’s ranges, but it exhausts heat into the space on the other side of the wall, so that space needs to handle the heat and the noise. Ducted and split systems move the noisy, hot parts away from the cellar and cost more to install. Size the system to the room and its insulation, not just to bottle count, and get the cooling contractor involved before you frame. If the room will not be cooled at all, keep the bottles you plan to age in a climate-controlled appliance instead.
The room itself
Insulation and a vapor barrier keep the cooling unit from running constantly and stop condensation in the walls. A sealed exterior-grade door matters for the same reason. Skipping them makes the cooling system work harder.
Racking cost per bottle: real prices
Racks are the most visible part of a cellar and the easiest to price. Here is what VintageView systems cost on our site on 3 Oct 2026, using the basic black or matte black finish for each:
| Rack | Bottles | Price | Per bottle |
|---|---|---|---|
| W Series Wine Rack 3 (36 in tall) | 9 (single deep) | $123 | $13.67 |
| 18 (double deep) | $130 | $7.22 | |
| 27 (triple deep) | $138 | $5.11 | |
| W Series Wine Rack 4 (48 in tall) | 12 | $154 | $12.83 |
| 24 | $162 | $6.75 | |
| 36 | $168 | $4.67 | |
| Evolution Wine Wall 45 1C | 9 | $305 | $33.89 |
| 18 | $382 | $21.22 | |
| 27 | $459 | $17.00 | |
| Evolution Single Sided Post Kit 10 1C (floor to ceiling) | 18 | $1,219 | $67.72 |
| 36 | $1,372 | $38.11 | |
| 54 | $1,527 | $28.28 |
Two patterns stand out. First, deeper racks are far cheaper per bottle: a triple-deep W Series rack costs only a little more than a single-deep one but holds three times the wine, and our 1, 2 and 3 deep rack guide explains the trade-off in visibility. Second, design-forward systems like Evolution and floor-to-ceiling post kits cost more per bottle in exchange for the look, so a common budget approach is a feature wall plus high-density racking elsewhere. Luxe finishes (chrome, golden bronze, gunmetal) add to these prices. Our wine cellar racks guide compares metal and wood, and how many bottles fit on a wine wall helps you count capacity before you price it.
Lower-cost alternatives to a full wine room
A wine cabinet
If you have fewer than about 100 bottles to age, a refrigerated cabinet avoids construction entirely. Our 69-bottle wood wine refrigerator cabinet is $2,762.99, about $40 per bottle of capacity. The wine fridge buying guide covers sizes and built-in vs freestanding.
A display wall in a cool room
For bottles you drink within months, a wall of racks in a naturally cool interior room or basement can work at a fraction of the cost. HomeAdvisor puts wall wine racks at $500 to $3,000 and under-stairs or crawl space conversions at $500 to $2,500. See wine display wall ideas for layouts that still hold real capacity.
Phase it
Build the shell correctly (insulation, vapor barrier, door, electrical for cooling) and buy racks in stages. VintageView systems are modular, so you can add sections as the collection grows. Browse the full VintageView collection or start with our wine rack and cellar storage guide.
Budget checklist
- Count bottles now and in five years; size the racking for the larger number.
- Decide whether you need long-term aging (cooling required) or display and short-term storage.
- Get a cooling quote early; it drives framing, electrical and venting.
- Price racking per bottle and mix high-density and display racks.
- Add door, insulation, flooring and lighting before you call the budget final.
Our racking orders ship free freight at $999 or more ($200 flat below that). Need help sizing a wall? Call 866-777-2590, Mon to Fri, 9AM to 6PM PST.
Frequently asked questions

What is the wine cellar cost per square foot?
HomeAdvisor puts room construction at roughly $300 to $600 per square foot.
How much does a small wine room cost?
For about 200 bottles in roughly 10 square feet, HomeAdvisor’s range is $7,000 to $15,000, mainly because a small room still needs insulation, a sealed door and cooling.
How much do wine cellar racks cost?
HomeAdvisor gives $2 to $20 per bottle. On our site, W Series racks run about $5 to $14 per bottle in basic finishes, while Evolution and floor-to-ceiling post kits run about $17 to $68 per bottle depending on depth.
Is a wine cabinet cheaper than a wine cellar?
For small collections, yes. A cabinet needs no construction; HomeAdvisor’s range for about 100 bottles is $500 to $4,000.
