Electric Fireplace With a TV Above: Heat and Clearance

An electric fireplace with a TV above it is the classic media wall, and unlike a wood or gas fireplace, it is usually a practical combination. Electric units have no flue or combustion, and Amantii, the main brand we carry, says its fireplaces are designed for installation beneath televisions and direct their heat forward. That does not mean anything goes. You still need to follow your model’s mantel clearance, plan the circuit and the TV mount, and pick a sensible height. This guide covers the heat question, the real clearance numbers from Amantii’s manuals, linear electric fireplace with TV above layouts, and the mistakes to avoid.

Is an electric fireplace with a TV above safe?

Amantii’s FAQ answers this directly: its electric fireplaces “are designed for safe installation beneath televisions” when installed according to the manufacturer’s clearance guidelines, and they are “engineered to direct heat forward,” so the TV above is not in the path of the heat. The same FAQ says most Amantii units produce about 5,000 BTU of supplemental heat, which is roughly what a 1500 watt space heater puts out. The WM-FM manual, for example, lists 1500 W max and 5,118 BTU.

The conditions are what matter:

  • Install the exact model to its manual, including any mantel clearance.
  • Keep the heat outlet clear. Do not let a soundbar, shelf or decor block it.
  • Keep furniture, curtains and other combustibles away from the front. The general safety instructions in Amantii’s manuals call for at least 3 feet from the front, sides and rear of the heater for items such as furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes and curtains.
  • Remember that most Amantii fireplaces can run the flame with the heat off, and Amantii notes some wall mount and built-in models have LED flames and no heat output at all. If the TV wall is mainly for looks, running flame-only removes the heat question entirely.

Also check your TV maker’s guidance on operating temperatures and nearby heat sources, since each TV manual sets its own conditions.

Mantel clearance by Amantii series

If you add a mantel or shelf between the fireplace and the TV, Amantii’s manuals give a minimum gap. These are from the current manuals we opened:

Series Minimum mantel clearance Measured from Source
WM-FM (wall mount or flush built-in) 1 in Glass front WM-FM manual
Symmetry XtraSlim 1/2 in Trim Symmetry XtraSlim manual
Panorama BI-SLIM (built-in) 4 in Trim Panorama Slim manual

These are minimums for a mantel, not recommended TV heights. In practice the gap between the top of the fireplace and the bottom of the TV is usually set by comfort and looks, not by clearance. Always check the manual for your exact model before you frame, because series differ.

Linear electric fireplace with TV above: layout basics

Linear fireplaces are a natural fit under a TV because their wide, short shape lines up with a widescreen. A few practical rules:

  • Match widths. Many people choose a fireplace about as wide as the TV, or slightly narrower. Our linear electric fireplace sizes guide has a TV width table so you can match them.
  • Keep the stack low. The taller the fireplace and the bigger the gap, the higher the TV ends up. A unit with a shorter overall height leaves more room to keep the screen lower, so compare heights on the spec sheets.
  • Center everything. Center the fireplace and TV on the same line, and plan for the mount, the outlet and the cable path before you close the wall.
  • Consider a tilting or pull-down mount if the TV must sit high, so viewers are not craning their necks.

Built-in or wall-mount under a TV?

A recessed (built-in) fireplace sits flush with the wall, so the TV wall looks clean and nothing sticks out under the screen. A wall-mount unit hangs on brackets and projects from the wall, which is faster and cheaper to install but adds depth below the TV. Some Amantii models do both. Our built-in vs wall-mount electric fireplace post compares them, and how to recess an electric fireplace into a wall covers framing and rough openings.

Wiring and wall planning

Amantii’s manuals call for a 15 amp, 120 volt branch circuit with proper ground at the location, preferably a dedicated circuit so the breaker does not trip. They also say not to use an extension cord or power strip. On a media wall that matters, because it is tempting to plug the TV, soundbar, streaming box and fireplace into one strip. Plan separate outlets, and have a licensed electrician handle any hardwiring or new circuits.

Before closing the wall, also plan:

  • TV blocking. Mount the TV into studs or solid blocking above the fireplace framing, not into the fireplace or its trim.
  • A recessed TV outlet and cable path behind the screen, so nothing hangs over the fireplace.
  • Service access. You may need to reach the fireplace’s connections later, so do not bury them.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a TV above an electric fireplace?

Yes, with a unit designed for it and installed to its manual. Amantii says its electric fireplaces are designed for installation beneath TVs and direct heat forward. Follow the model’s mantel clearance and keep the heat outlet unobstructed.

Will an electric fireplace damage my TV?

Amantii’s FAQ says no, when installed correctly. For extra margin, run the flame without heat when you are watching for long periods, and check your TV maker’s temperature guidance.

How far should a TV be above an electric fireplace?

There is no single number. The manuals give minimum mantel clearances (1/2 in for Symmetry XtraSlim, 1 in for WM-FM, 4 in for Panorama Slim). Beyond that, keep the TV as low as the layout allows for comfortable viewing.

Is a linear electric fireplace with a TV above a good idea?

It is a practical media wall layout, because a wide, short linear unit keeps the TV lower than a tall traditional firebox would. Match the widths and plan the wiring before the drywall goes up.

Do I need a dedicated circuit?

Amantii’s manuals call for a 15 amp, 120 volt grounded circuit and prefer a dedicated one. Do not run the fireplace through a power strip shared with your TV gear.
