How to Clean a Crystal Chandelier Safely

Here is how to clean a crystal chandelier safely: turn the power off at the breaker, let the bulbs cool, pad the floor below, then either wipe each crystal in place with a damp white cotton glove and dry it at once with a second glove, or take the crystals down, hand wash them in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry. Lamps Plus suggests a full cleaning about once a year and a light dusting every two or three months in between.

Safety first: before you touch the fixture

Set up the job like this:

  • Power off at the breaker. Lamps Plus and Schonbek both say to turn the fixture off at the breaker box before cleaning. Set up a work light nearby.
  • Let the bulbs cool. Give them time after switching off before you handle crystals near the sockets.
  • Use a stable ladder on level floor, and move it rather than leaning out.
  • Bring a helper for big fixtures. A second person can steady the ladder and hand you parts.
  • Pad the floor. Both sources recommend a towel or drop cloth under the fixture.
  • Never spin the fixture. Schonbek and Lamps Plus both warn against twirling or rotating a chandelier; it can loosen its support. Walk around it and clean in sections.
  • Keep liquid out of sockets. Never spray cleaner into the sockets, wiring or canopy. Any rewiring or remounting is a job for a licensed electrician, and local code has the final word.

How to clean a crystal chandelier in place

This faster method suits a chandelier that is only dusty or dull.

  1. Mix a solution of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in a clean spray bottle. Lamps Plus suggests one part alcohol to four parts water; Schonbek suggests one part alcohol to three parts water.
  2. Spray the glove or cloth, not the chandelier. Schonbek says to spray one white cotton glove.
  3. Gently polish each crystal with the damp glove, then wipe it immediately with a dry glove or lint free cloth.
  4. Do not tug or pull on crystals. Schonbek notes this can chip or crack the crystal at its connectors or pull it off the fixture.

What about chandelier cleaning spray?

Packaged chandelier cleaning spray products are sold for spraying directly on a fixture and letting it drip dry. Neither source we used covers that approach, so we cannot vouch for it. What both do say: avoid cleaners with ammonia. Schonbek says ammonia may degrade the crystal and the fixture’s finish, and Lamps Plus says it can strip the gold or silver finish from the metal hooks that hold the crystals. If you use one, check the label for ammonia and keep spray away from sockets.

Removing crystals for a deep clean

When a fixture has real grime build up, or you want to clean the frame properly, take the crystals down.

  1. Map it first. Photograph each tier or make a quick drawing. Schonbek says to use the fixture’s trim diagram to put crystals back, and to contact its customer service if you need one; for other brands, ask the maker or the seller.
  2. Remove gently and lay crystals out in order.
  3. Wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent or dish soap.
  4. Rinse each piece in clean water.
  5. Dry with a soft clean cloth.
  6. Rehang wearing white gloves or using a soft cloth so you do not leave fingerprints.

Drying without spots

Both sources say to dry crystals right away rather than leaving them wet. Distilled water in the spray mix and an immediate wipe with a dry glove or lint free cloth is the routine they describe.

Cleaning method comparison

Method When to use it Time and effort
Light dusting (feather or lambswool duster) Every two or three months between cleanings (Lamps Plus) Minutes; no liquid, power still needs to be off if you are close to bulbs
Crystals in place, glove and alcohol mix Annual cleaning when crystals look dull but are not grimy Faster; one person on a ladder for small fixtures, more for tall ones
Crystals removed, wash and rinse Heavy grime, cleaning the frame, or after years without cleaning Slowest; needs a map or trim diagram and a helper on large fixtures
Professional cleaning service Fixture hung too high or too elaborate to handle yourself (Lamps Plus) Least work for you

Crystal chandelier care: how often, frame and bulbs

How often. Once a year or when crystal looks dull (Lamps Plus).

The metal frame. Schonbek says to wipe the frame with a soft dry cloth once the crystals are off. Keep ammonia cleaners away from plated finishes, as noted above.

Bulbs. If the fixture is hard to reach, Lamps Plus suggests changing all the bulbs while you are up there, never exceeding rated wattage.

Too high to reach? Our foyer chandelier size guide covers placement in tall entries; a high fixture may be a job for a pro cleaning service.

Replacing missing prisms

Store any spare crystals that came with your fixture. Some of our listings include spares: the 48 inch gold Empire listing says it ships 674 crystal balls plus 6 extra, and the 42 inch gold Empire listing says 476 plus 4 extra. For a lost or chipped piece, match the shape and size to your map, and ask the manufacturer for the trim diagram and replacement part.

Ammonia cleaners, tugging on crystals, rotating the fixture and spraying liquid near sockets. Any wiring repair belongs to a licensed electrician.
