The quickest way to get the chandelier size for a dining room right is to start with the table, not the room. Two rules from lighting retailers agree closely: make the chandelier about 12 inches narrower than the table, or between half and three quarters of the table’s width. Then hang it so the bottom sits about 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop under an 8 foot ceiling, and a little higher for each extra foot of ceiling. This guide walks through each rule with real fixture sizes from our listings.
Chandelier size for dining room tables: the two width rules
Rule 1: table width minus 12 inches. Birch Lane’s chandelier size guide says the chandelier should be 12 inches narrower than the table so no one bumps into it while getting in and out of their seat. A 42 inch wide table gets a chandelier of about 30 inches.
Rule 2: 50 to 75 percent of table width. Mod Lighting’s dining room chandelier guide puts the range at 50 to 75 percent of the table width, and suggests sizing toward the upper end when in doubt. Their example: a 72 inch table gives a range of 36 to 54 inches.
For a round or square table, “width” is simply the diameter or side length. For a rectangular table, use the short side (the distance across), then see the section on long tables below for the shape of the fixture.
Chandelier size calculator: the room rule
If you have no table yet, or the fixture is for an open room, there is a second check from Birch Lane. Add the room’s length and width in feet, and use that number as the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 by 14 foot dining room adds up to 26, so a chandelier of about 26 inches. Mod Lighting notes that when the room number and the table number disagree, the table measurement should win, which makes sense: the chandelier reads as part of the table setting.
Chandelier sizes by table, with examples we sell
The table below runs the two width rules for common table sizes and pairs each with a fixture from our listings. Prices are as listed at the time of writing.
| Table width | Width minus 12 in | 50 to 75 percent | Example we sell |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 in | 24 in | 18 to 27 in | Meyda 24 in Wide Bungalow Mission 4 Light, about $1,083 |
| 42 in | 30 in | 21 to 31.5 in | Meyda 30 in W Revolution 4 Light, about $748 |
| 44 in | 32 in | 22 to 33 in | Meyda 32 in W Crestwood 4 Light, about $1,571 |
| 48 in | 36 in | 24 to 36 in | Meyda 36 in Wide Loxley 18 Light Two Tier, about $4,200 |
| 60 in round | 48 in | 30 to 45 in | Luxury Gold Crystal Chandelier, 42 Inch, about $1,534 (tall ceilings only, see below) |
Tables 36 to 44 inches wide land on a chandelier of roughly 24 to 32 inches, which is why that range is so common in our Meyda lighting catalog. If you are still choosing the table itself, our dining table size guide covers widths and lengths by seat count.
How high to hang a chandelier over a dining table
Both guides place the bottom of the fixture about 30 inches or a little more above the tabletop. Birch Lane gives 30 to 36 inches. Mod Lighting gives 30 to 34 inches for standard 8 to 9 foot ceilings, then adds 3 inches for every foot of ceiling height above 8 feet. Both say to center the chandelier on the table, not on the room, which matters when the table is off center.
| Ceiling height | Bottom of fixture above tabletop |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 30 to 34 in |
| 9 ft | 33 to 37 in |
| 10 ft | 36 to 40 in |
| 12 ft | 42 to 46 in |
Figures follow Mod Lighting’s 3 inches per extra foot rule; the 9 foot row is that rule applied by us.
Check the fixture’s own height
Width is only half the fit. Measure from the floor to the tabletop, add the hang height above, and subtract that from the ceiling height. What is left is the most fixture (body plus chain or downrod) you can use. Under a 96 inch (8 foot) ceiling, a 30 inch tall table plus a 30 inch hang height leaves only 36 inches for the fixture. Our 42 inch crystal chandelier is listed as 61 inches tall with a 79 inch adjustable chain, so it suits double height rooms, not a standard 8 foot dining room. Many of our Meyda listings give only the main width, so ask us for the overall height before you order.
Chandelier for a rectangular dining table: oblong and linear
A single round fixture can look small over a long table. Mod Lighting recommends linear chandeliers, elongated oval fixtures or multi light bar pendants to follow the line of a rectangular table, and notes that tables above 84 inches long often benefit from two pendants or two coordinating fixtures spaced along the length.
Neither guide gives a length formula for oblong fixtures, so we keep it simple: keep the fixture’s length well inside the table’s length so the ends of the table stay clear of the light, and keep its width under the same 12 inch rule as above. Oblong options in our listings include:
- Meyda 39 in L Loxley 18 Light Oblong Chandelier, about $3,708.
- Meyda 48 in Long Pine Branch 12 Light Oblong Chandelier, about $5,000.
- Meyda 72 in Long Loxley 24 Light Oblong Chandelier, about $6,460, for long tables.

Dining room vs foyer chandeliers
The foyer follows different rules because no one is sitting under the fixture. Birch Lane recommends at least 7 feet of clearance between the bottom of the chandelier and the floor in an entryway, raising it an extra 3 inches for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet, and in a two story foyer hanging the bottom of the fixture level with the second floor. The room size rule above is a good starting point for diameter. Large tiered pieces like our Grand Gold Crystal Chandelier, 48 Inch (listed as 71 inches tall, about $2,161) belong here rather than over a dining table under a standard ceiling.

Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier for a 6 seat dining table?
Measure the table’s width, not its length. If your 6 seat table is 36 to 42 inches wide, that points to a chandelier of about 24 to 30 inches using the width minus 12 inches rule, or an oblong fixture if the table is long.
How high to hang a chandelier over a dining table with a 10 foot ceiling?
Following Mod Lighting’s guidance, the bottom of the fixture would sit about 36 to 40 inches above the tabletop.
Is there a simple chandelier size calculator?
Two quick ones: table width minus 12 inches, or room length plus width in feet read as inches. When they disagree in a dining room, go with the table number.
Should I use one chandelier or two over a long table?
For tables longer than about 84 inches, Mod Lighting suggests two pendants or fixtures along the length. A single oblong or linear chandelier is the other good option.
