The right ice bin size is the one that holds enough ice to cover your busiest stretch of service, minus what the head can make during that stretch, and that is the same width as the ice machine head sitting on top of it. A 22 in head goes on a 22 in bin, a 30 in head on a 30 in bin, and anything else needs a manufacturer adapter. This guide walks through the math, the fit and the features, using real bins from our catalog.

Ice storage bin capacity: rated storage vs usable ice
Bins are sold by the manufacturer’s storage figure in pounds. Treat it as a ceiling, not a promise:
- The word “approximately”. Icetro lists the IB-026-22 at approximately 265 lb and the IB-033 at approximately 350 lb. Follett lists the 425-30 as holding up to 430 lb.
- The head decides when to stop. The ice machine shuts off when its bin level sensor detects ice, so the pile never fills every corner of the cabinet. The Manitowoc Indigo NXT heads, for example, use an acoustical ice sensing probe for this.
- Some ice sits out of reach. Back corners of a deep bin are hard to scoop; slope front and clean reach designs help.
Do the math against the rated number, then leave a cushion.
How to size an ice bin for your peak period
Daily production tells you whether the head keeps up over 24 hours. The bin answers whether you run dry during the rush. Use three numbers.
- Peak use. Pounds of ice used in your busiest continuous stretch, such as a Friday dinner and bar service.
- Head output during that stretch. Divide the head’s 24 hour rating by 24, then multiply by the hours in the stretch. Use the AHRI rating at 90 F air and 70 F water when the listing gives one, because that is closer to a hot kitchen than the 70/50 figure.
- Bin needed. Peak use minus head output, plus a cushion.
Worked example with a 22 in head
Our Manitowoc IDP0420A with D420 storage bin pairs a 22 in head rated at up to 463 lb per 24 hours at 70/50 and 358 lb AHRI certified at 90/70. Say a bar uses about 300 lb between 5 PM and 9 PM.
- 358 lb divided by 24 is about 15 lb per hour, so the head adds roughly 60 lb over those four hours.
- 300 lb used minus 60 lb made means the bin must start the rush holding about 240 lb.
- Refilling 240 lb at 15 lb per hour takes about 16 hours, which fits before the next evening rush.
A 22 in bin rated at approximately 265 lb, such as the Icetro IB-026-22, would cover that rush with very little cushion. With growing volume, or two rushes only a few hours apart, the bin will not refill in time, so step up a size. (The example only borrows the Manitowoc numbers; cross-brand pairing is covered below.)
Ice bin for ice machine heads: width, adapters and bin tops
The bin top must match the head’s footprint so the head sits level and sealed and ice drops straight in. Common widths are 22, 30 and 48 in. When the head is narrower than the bin, use the bin maker’s adapter or top.

Stacking two heads on one bin
Some manufacturers approve two heads on one bin, side by side on a wide bin or stacked with a stacking kit. It can double production in one footprint, but use only a combination and kit the head maker lists. Our listings do not include stacking kits, and stacking adds height.
Height, doors and scoop access
Add bin, head and leg heights, then check your ceiling and the head maker’s required top clearance. On the Manitowoc combo above, the D420 bin is 22 in wide, 34 in deep and 50 in high, and the head adds 21.5 in, so the pair stands about 71.5 in before you account for legs.
- The Icetro IB-085-48 is 48 in wide, 33 in deep and 48.8 in high, with adjustable legs of 6.3 to 7.8 in and a 16 in top-hinged door.
- The Kloppenberg 705-SS upright bin lists a 30 in minimum door clearance, sliding view windows and a poly snout.
- The Kloppenberg CRB-48 Clean Reach is built around large openings for quick scoop dispensing and an easy lift door.
A tall bin with a head on top can put the door above comfortable reach; a lower, wider or slope front bin is often easier to scoop from.
Drains and construction
Every bin needs a meltwater drain. The Icetro IB-085-48 lists a 3/4 in FPT drain, and the Kloppenberg CRB-48 has a factory-installed 1 in IPS stainless steel drain. Drain routing, air gaps and floor sink connections follow local plumbing code; a licensed plumber and code have the final word.
Construction comes down to liner, shell and insulation:
- Liner. The Follett 425-30 has polyethylene-lined walls with a stainless steel bottom. Kloppenberg bins use a seamless poly liner, with coved corners on the CRB-48. Icetro bins use a plastic interior.
- Shell. Stainless exteriors are standard; the IB-085-48 lists 304 stainless panels and an ABS door.
- Insulation. The CRB-48 lists 1.5 in foamed in place polyurethane, and the IB-085-48 lists high density urethane.
