A loft bed with desk works when three numbers line up: your ceiling height, the height of the sleeping deck, and the headroom left for someone sitting at the desk underneath. Check those first, then the guardrails, the maximum mattress thickness and the weight limit. The twin loft beds we carry are about 41 to 56 inches wide, 77 to 79 inches long and 49 to 69 inches tall. This guide compares them using the specs on each listing and flags the specs that are missing.
Loft bed with desk: built-in desk or open space?
- Built-in desk. The maker fixes the desk height and legroom. The Dexo twin loft bed has an L shaped desk in the corner below, ladders on both sides and full-length guardrails. The twin over workstation loft bed in white (also in warm grey) adds a bookcase, a seat with 3-inch removable cushions, a flip-top storage box and an underseat drawer.
- Open space below. You choose the desk’s height and width. The Mylz twin loft bed in black is a full-metal frame with an angled ladder, and its listing says the open area is for a desk, seating or storage. It also comes in silver.
A built-in desk is simpler; an open frame gives a tall user more control. If the room must double as a guest room, compare a Murphy bed with desk, which folds away instead of sitting overhead.

None of these listings state the deck height, the clearance under the bed, the desk height or a maximum mattress thickness. Those matter most for a desk, so call us at 866-777-2590 (Mon to Fri, 9AM to 6PM PST) and we will ask the supplier. Prices were checked October 9, 2026; confirm stock before ordering.
Loft bed ceiling height: how much room you need
There is no single ceiling rule for loft beds. As a reference point, the Pottery Barn Teen Sleep and Study loft bed page (pbteen.com) lists an overall height of 73 inches, a recommended maximum mattress height of 7.5 inches and a “minimum ceiling height recommended 8′,” and says to include ceiling fans and hanging fixtures when measuring.
Our math for a standard 8 foot (96 inch) ceiling, using each listing’s overall height:
- Twin over workstation (68.75 in): about 27 inches above the frame.
- Dexo (67 in): about 29 inches.
- Mylz (61 in): about 35 inches.
Space above the mattress is a little larger, since the mattress sits below the top of the guardrails, but you need the deck height to know exactly. With a ceiling under 8 feet, ask us for it first.
Headroom at the desk
The space below has to fit a seated person, not just a desk. With an open frame like the Mylz, get the clearance under the bed rails, then subtract your desk height and the user’s seated head height. The Ady is a junior loft at 49.49 inches overall, and its listing pitches the space below for storage, play or study. A full desk and chair with a teen or adult at it is unlikely to fit (our estimate), so treat it as a storage or play loft.
Loft bed safety: the federal guardrail rules
A loft bed counts as a bunk bed under US rules. The CPSC bunk bed rule, 16 CFR part 1513 (read on eCFR, ecfr.gov), defines a bunk bed as one in which the underside of any foundation is over 30 inches from the floor. Key points:
- Two guardrails, at least one per side. One must be continuous between the end structures; the other may stop no more than 15 inches short at either end. If the ladder is on one side, the continuous rail goes on the other.
- Guardrail height: the top must be at least 5 inches above the mattress when the maximum thickness in the instructions is used.
- Openings below the guardrail must not pass the rule’s wedge block test, which targets entrapment.
- Instructions must give the mattress size and maximum thickness, and warn: no children under 6 on the upper bunk, use guardrails on both sides, no horseplay on or under the bed, one person on the upper bunk, and use the ladder.
Beds not intended for children fall under 16 CFR part 1213, which the rule calls substantively identical. Because our listings do not print a maximum mattress thickness, check the instructions or ask us before buying a mattress; too thick a mattress eats into the 5 inch margin. Our bunk bed buying guide applies the same rule to two-tier beds.
How much weight can a loft bed hold?
Among the beds above, only the Ady listings state a limit: 350 lbs. The Mylz, Dexo and twin over workstation listings give none, so ask before buying, especially for an adult. Product weight (about 62 to 65 lbs for the Mylz and 99 lbs for the Dexo, per the listings) is not a load rating.
Loft bed with desk for adults
Most loft beds are sold for kids and teens, and several listings above say so. For an adult, look for a stated weight limit that covers the sleeper plus bedding, room to sit up below the ceiling, and a sturdy ladder. The Ady’s 350 lb rating is the only adult-relevant number in our listings. If a twin feels too narrow, a Murphy bed with desk may fit better.
Loft bed vs bunk bed
A loft bed has one raised bed with usable space underneath, so it suits one person in a small room. A bunk bed puts a second bed in that space. The safety rule is the same for both.
Price check: Benzara direct vs our store
The Mylz, Dexo and Ady are made by Benzara, which also sells on benzara.com. On October 9, 2026, its prices matched ours on the Ady ($341.30 and $356.27), Dexo ($617.84) and silver Mylz ($307.99); the black Mylz was $373.99 there and $313.63 here. Benzara showed the Mylz and Dexo as unavailable that day. Orders under $999 pay a flat $200 shipping with us (free freight at $999 or more), and Benzara’s shipping policy page lists no charge, so compare checkout totals: for a single frame, buying direct may cost less. We found no direct-to-consumer price from the maker of the twin over workstation bed.

Frequently asked questions
What ceiling height do you need for a loft bed with desk?
For a full-height loft, 8 feet is a common minimum; Pottery Barn Teen recommends it for its 73 inch loft. Subtract the bed’s height from your ceiling height and keep clear of fans.
Is a twin loft bed with desk big enough for a teen?
It takes a standard twin mattress, which suits most teens. Check the weight limit and desk headroom if they are tall.
How thick can the mattress be on a loft bed?
Use the maximum in the instructions. Federal rules require guardrails at least 5 inches above a mattress of that thickness.
Loft bed vs bunk bed: which is better for a small room?
A loft bed, if one person sleeps there, because the space below becomes a desk or storage. Choose a bunk bed for two sleepers.
