Louvered Pergolas: Cost, Pros and Cons

A louvered pergola has a roof of tilting slats you open for sun and airflow or close for shade and light rain. In our current listings, a louvered pergola costs from $1,265.99 for a roughly 10×10 ft model to $6,372.99 for a 10×19 ft all aluminum unit, listed at the time of writing. Every louvered model we carry right now is manual, not motorized, and most name a crank. This guide builds on our pergola vs gazebo guide with how louvers work, cost by size, ratings and upkeep.

How a louvered pergola works

Louver angles: open, closed and in between

Our 10×10 and 10×12 ft aluminum models list two independent sets of louvers that tilt from 0 to 90 degrees. You can keep one half closed over the table while the other stays open, or angle both partway to block low sun while hot air escapes.

Gutters and drainage

When the louvers close, rain runs off the slats into a gutter built into the frame, then down through the hollow posts. The 8610 and 8640 series listings say water exits through notches at the base of the posts, and the 9.8×9.8 ft steel model says it releases water at the base to reduce splashing.

Manual crank vs motorized louvered roof

On a manual system you turn a crank. The 8610C, 8610J, 8640E, Byron and 9.8×9.8 ft steel listings all name a crank. The 10×10 and 10×12 ft aluminum listings describe adjustable louvers but do not state how they are operated, so call us to confirm before you order.

A motorized louvered roof swaps the crank for a motor and remote or app control. StruXure, a louvered pergola maker, says on its FAQ page that its systems come in manual or motorized versions, that an optional rain sensor closes the louvers when rain is detected, that sensors can open the louvers in high wind, and that zones can be scheduled separately. StruXure prices by dealer quote. None of our current listings include a motor or sensors, so a motorized roof means a custom dealer project plus wiring. Any outdoor electrical work belongs to a licensed electrician, and local code has the final word.

Louvered pergola cost by size in our listings

Prices below are listed at the time of writing and can change. Wind and snow figures are the manufacturer’s statements from each listing.

Model Size Frame / louvers Operation Wind and snow (as listed) Price
Byron Black Louvered Pergola 117 x 117 in Aluminum / iron Crank Not listed $1,265.99
10×10 FT Louvered Pergola (White) 10 x 10 ft Aluminum / aluminum Not listed Level 6 wind; 200 lbs snow capacity, but not for snow loads when closed $1,825.99
10×12 FT Louvered Pergola (Brown) 10 x 12 ft Aluminum / aluminum Not listed Level 6 wind; 200 lbs snow capacity, but not for snow loads when closed $2,119.99
9.8×9.8 ft Louvered Pergola with Solar LEDs 118.1 x 118.1 in Steel / steel Crank 8.19 psf snow, level 6 wind with expansion screws $2,362.99
8640E Louver Pergola 10x19FT 10 x 19 ft Aluminum / galvanized steel Crank Up to 73 mph wind; open louvers in moderate to heavy snow $4,827.99
8610C Louver Pergola 10x13FT 10 x 13 ft Aluminum / aluminum Crank Up to 73 mph wind; open louvers in moderate to heavy snow $5,553.99
8610J Louver Pergola 10x19FT 10 x 19 ft Aluminum / aluminum Crank Up to 73 mph wind; open louvers in moderate to heavy snow $6,372.99

Working from the nominal footprint, that is about $13 per square foot for the Byron, roughly $18 to $19 for the 10×10 and 10×12 ft aluminum models, and about $25 to $43 per square foot for the 8610 and 8640 series. Price does not track size alone: the 10×19 ft 8640E, with galvanized steel louvers, costs less than the smaller all aluminum 8610C. You can browse every model in our The Everything Depot brand range.

Aluminum pergola or steel louvers?

The 10×10 and 10×12 ft aluminum pergola listings describe their aluminum as rust resistant. Steel louvers on the 8640E and the 9.8×9.8 ft model rely on galvanizing or powder coat, so scratches in the coating are worth touching up. The 9.8×9.8 ft steel model is the only louvered listing that states a snow load per square foot (8.19 psf). The 10×10 and 10×12 ft aluminum listings give a 200 lbs snow capacity but also say they are not intended to bear snow loads when closed, so treat them as open roof structures in winter. If you want a solid roof that stays closed all winter, compare these with the ratings in our hardtop vs soft top gazebo guide, and use our gazebo size guide to check how much furniture fits between the posts.

Pros and cons of a louvered pergola

  • Pro: adjustable shade. Tilt for morning sun, close for midday, open at night.
  • Pro: ventilation. Heat escapes through open slats instead of collecting under a solid roof.
  • Pro: rain cover with drainage. Closed louvers send water to the gutter and posts.
  • Con: snow limits. Most listings tell you to open the louvers and clear snow; the 10×10 and 10×12 ft models are not intended to bear snow loads when closed.
  • Con: weather duty. The 8610 and 8640 listings say to open the louvers and raise or remove shade screens in high wind, so someone has to be home to do it on a manual roof.
  • Con: cost. A louvered roof costs more than an open wood pergola of similar size.

Freestanding or attached to the house

Every louvered pergola we list ships as a freestanding kit secured with expansion bolts or screws. The Byron listing calls itself freestanding outright. A Home Depot guide to building an attached pergola uses posts on one side only and joist hangers screwed to the building for the beams on the other. Do not modify a four post metal kit to hang off a wall unless the manufacturer approves it. StruXure says its systems can be attached to a host structure or built freestanding. If you want an attached roof, bring in a licensed contractor and check your local code first.

Louvered pergola maintenance

  • Clear leaves from the gutters and check that the drain notches at each post base stay open.
  • Open the louvers and brush off snow before it builds up, as the listings direct.
  • Check anchor bolts after big storms, and work the crank through its full range a few times each season so the linkage does not stiffen.

Hot tubs, fire pits and grills under louvers

Planning one over a spa? Our hot tub privacy and landscaping ideas already cover lid lifter clearance and layout, so start there. One listing, the 10×10 ft white model, says there is room for a fire pit. We do not recommend an open fire under any pergola roof. Read our guide to a fire pit under a covered patio before you plan any flame near a roof, and always follow the clearances in your fire table or grill manual, which take priority over a pergola listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a motorized louvered roof worth it?

It can be if you are not always home when weather changes, since sensors can react for you. Expect a custom dealer quote and an electrician for the wiring. Our current models are all manual or unstated, so call us to confirm.

Can an aluminum pergola handle snow?

Go by the listing. Our aluminum louvered models tell you to open the louvers in snow, and the 10×10 and 10×12 ft models are not intended to bear snow loads when closed. The only per square foot snow load in our louvered range is 8.19 psf on the steel 9.8×9.8 ft model; the aluminum 10×10 and 10×12 ft listings mention a 200 lbs snow capacity alongside that warning, so follow the warning.

How much does a 10×10 louvered pergola cost?

In our listings, roughly 10×10 ft louvered pergolas run $1,265.99 to $2,362.99 at the time of writing, depending on louver material and features like solar LED lights.
