The right plyo box height for most beginners is lower than they think. NASM’s box jump guide recommends that beginners start box jumps at 12 to 18 inches and move up only as power and landing control improve. That is why the most useful home gym plyo box is a 3-in-1 box: one box that flips to 20, 24 or 30 inches, so the same piece serves step-ups now and taller jumps later. This guide covers how to pick a plyo box height, foam vs wood, the space you need, and the two 3-in-1 boxes we sell.
Plyo box height: the quick answer
| Your level | Box jump height to start | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| New to jumping | 12 to 18 in (NASM’s beginner range) | Use step-ups on the 20 in side, or start jumps on a lower platform until landings feel controlled |
| Comfortable, controlled landings | 20 in | 3-in-1 box, 20 in side |
| Experienced | 24 in | 3-in-1 box, 24 in side |
| Advanced, strong landings | 30 in | 3-in-1 box, 30 in side |
The rule NASM gives is simple: pick a height where you can land safely and under control. If you have to tuck your knees to your chest or land in a deep squat to make it onto the box, the box is too high.
What size plyo box should I get?
For a home gym, buy one 3-in-1 box rather than several fixed-height boxes. A 3-in-1 box is a rectangle measured 20 x 24 x 30 inches, and you choose the height by which side is on the floor. Both of our boxes use those three heights.
- 20 in side: step-ups, box squats for many lifters, seated work, and early box jumps. It is also the most stable orientation, because the box rests on its largest face (30 x 24 in).
- 24 in side: the next step up for box jumps once landings are solid.
- 30 in side: advanced jumps and high step-ups. The box now stands on its smallest face (24 x 20 in), so check that it sits flat and does not rock before each set.
Our math on footprint: on the 20 in side the box covers 30 x 24 inches of floor, on the 24 in side 30 x 20 inches, and on the 30 in side 24 x 20 inches. Add clear floor in front for your approach and behind for a missed jump.
Plyo box for beginners: why step down matters
NASM’s guidance is to step down from the box rather than jump down, to reduce impact stress, and to avoid repetitions when tired because fatigue breaks down landing mechanics. NASM suggests 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 reps with full rest, and never training plyometrics to failure. If you have knee, ankle, Achilles or back problems, or you are returning from injury, check with your doctor or a physical therapist before adding jumping.
Foam vs wood plyo box
This is the biggest decision after height. Both of our boxes are 3-in-1 boxes with the same three heights.
| Feature | Foam (soft) plyo box | Wood plyo box |
|---|---|---|
| Our model | Tru Grit Foam Competition Soft Plyo Box PLYO1000 | Tru Grit Wood Plyo Box 3-in-1 PLYO1010 |
| Our price | $204.99 | $275 |
| Heights | 20, 24 and 30 in | 20, 24 and 30 in (30 x 24 x 20 in box) |
| Build | Industrial grade wood core with interlocking joints, covered in rigid foam with a limited-slip vinyl surface | Construction-grade 3/4 in plywood, CNC machined, sanded edges |
| Missed jumps | Foam softens shin contact | Sanded edges, but still a hard edge |
| Floors | Foam protects floors | Bare plywood; put it on a mat |
| Assembly | Not described as flat packed | Flat packed, interlocking joints, listed as about 10 minutes to assemble |
| Internal reinforcement | In the two larger sizes, per Tru Grit | On the two largest boxes, per the listing |
When to choose foam
Choose foam if you are learning box jumps, train alone, have kids or teens using the gym, or have nice floors. A missed jump on wood can scrape a shin; on foam it mostly bumps. Tru Grit describes the foam box as protecting both your shins and your floor, and the vinyl cover as limited-slip even when you are sweating. Our foam box price of $204.99 is below Tru Grit’s own price for the same box, which was $275 on Tru Grit’s product page when we checked.
When to choose wood
Choose wood if you want a firm, flat platform for step-ups, Bulgarian split squats and box squats, or you prefer a box you can sand and refinish. To be fair on price: wood 3-in-1 boxes are widely sold, and Rogue’s Flat Pack Games Box (also 20, 24 and 30 in, CNC machined plywood, 1 year warranty) listed at $125 when we checked, well below our $275 wood box. If budget is your main concern, compare before you buy, or choose our foam box, which is the better value in our lineup.
3 in 1 plyo box: space and ceiling height
Our simple planning math:
- Floor: allow about an arm’s length of clear floor in front of the box for your stance, and clear space behind and to the sides in case you miss. Keep plates, bars and racks away from the landing zone.
- Ceiling: add the box height to your own height. A 6 ft (72 in) person standing on the 30 in side has the top of their head at 102 in, which is higher than an 8 ft (96 in) ceiling. Even on the 20 in side, that person’s head is at 92 in, only 4 in from an 8 ft ceiling. In basements and low garages, use the 20 in side or do step-ups instead of jumps.
- Surface: jump on a flat, non-slip floor or rubber mat, and make sure the box does not slide before each set.

More than box jumps
A plyo box earns its spot because it does many jobs:
- Step-ups and lateral step-ups (20 or 24 in side).
- Rear-foot-elevated split squats (20 in side).
- Box squats to a consistent depth.
- Incline or decline push-ups with hands or feet on the box.
- Seated med ball work with a medicine ball.
Pair the box with a speed jump rope for conditioning and power loop bands for warm-ups, and you have a full jumping and conditioning corner for a few hundred dollars. If you want a padded surface for hip thrusts and step-ups too, an adjustable bench covers that. Our garage gym on a budget plan shows where a box fits in the buying order.
Warranty, shipping and returns
The Tru Grit warranty table on our listings gives wood crafted items and upholstery or padding a 90 day warranty, and excludes damage from negligent use. Orders of $999 or more ship free by freight; below that, shipping is a $200 flat rate, so a box ordered on its own carries that charge, while adding it to a larger home gym order of $999 or more avoids it. Returns follow our return and refund policy. Questions about sizing? Call 866-777-2590, Monday to Friday, 9AM to 6PM PST.

Frequently asked questions
What plyo box height should a beginner use?
NASM recommends 12 to 18 inches for beginners. Since both of our 3-in-1 boxes start at 20 in, beginners often use the 20 in side for step-ups first, then progress to jumps once landings are soft and controlled.
Is a 20, 24 or 30 inch box better?
None is better on its own. A 3-in-1 box gives you all three, so you can step up at 20 in, jump at 24 in and save 30 in for when your landings stay quiet and balanced.
Foam vs wood plyo box: which is safer?
Foam is more forgiving if you miss, because it softens shin contact, and it protects floors. Wood is firmer and flatter for step-ups and split squats. For learning box jumps at home, foam is the safer pick.
Should you jump down from a plyo box?
NASM advises stepping down rather than jumping down to reduce impact stress on your joints. Step down, reset your stance and then do the next rep.
