How much does a wine bottle weigh? A full 750 ml bottle of still wine weighs about 2.9 pounds (around 1.3 kg) on average, and anywhere from about 2.6 to 3.3 pounds depending on how heavy the glass is. The wine itself is close to 1.65 pounds (0.75 kg) in every bottle; the glass is what varies. A standard Champagne bottle is heavier, close to 3.5 pounds full. Below are the numbers for empty bottles, full bottles, cases and whole collections, with the sources behind them, and what they mean when you plan storage.
How much does a wine bottle weigh? The numbers
Two facts drive every figure on this page. First, 750 ml of wine weighs roughly 750 grams, because wine’s density is close to water’s (this is an approximation; sweet wines run slightly heavier). Second, glass weight varies a lot. According to Decanter’s report on the Sustainable Wine Roundtable bottle accord (October 2023), the average 750 ml still wine bottle weighs 550 g, and the accord’s retailers aim to move to bottles of 420 g or less by the end of 2026. Jancis Robinson’s report on the same accord (jancisrobinson.com, 11 October 2023) cites one Burgundy producer cutting its bottles from 700 to 750 g down to 450 g, showing how heavy some premium glass runs.
| Bottle | Empty glass | Full bottle (glass + 750 g wine) |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight 750 ml (SWR target) | 420 g (0.93 lb) | About 1,170 g (2.6 lb) |
| Average 750 ml still wine | 550 g (1.21 lb) | About 1,300 g (2.9 lb) |
| Heavy premium 750 ml | 750 g (1.65 lb) | About 1,500 g (3.3 lb) |
| Standard Champagne 750 ml | 835 g (1.84 lb) | About 1,585 g (3.5 lb) |
The full-bottle column is our math: glass weight plus 750 g of wine, before the cork, capsule and label, which add only a few grams. Our average figure matches Jancis Robinson’s “about 1,300 g for a full bottle,” and the lightweight figure matches her 1,170 g. It also lines up with VintageView’s rule of thumb, used in our studs vs drywall anchors guide, of about 3 pounds per full 750 ml bottle.
Champagne bottle weight
Sparkling wine needs thick glass to hold pressure. Decanter reported in April 2022 that the standard Champagne bottle weighs 835 g, a design the Champagne trade body introduced in 2010 to replace the earlier 900 g bottle, and that Champagne Telmont planned to cut its bottles to 800 g. So a full bottle of Champagne weighs about 3.5 pounds, roughly 20% more than an average still wine.
Empty wine bottle weight
An empty 750 ml wine bottle weighs between about 0.9 and 1.7 pounds (420 to 750 g), with 1.2 pounds (550 g) a fair average. If you need an exact figure for your own bottles, weigh an empty one on a kitchen scale; the spread between light and heavy glass is large enough to matter for big collections.
Weight of a full wine bottle by size
For other formats we can only state the wine weight with confidence, because we have not found a reliable published glass weight for each size:
- Half bottle (375 ml): about 0.83 lb of wine, plus the glass.
- Standard (750 ml): about 1.65 lb of wine; 2.6 to 3.3 lb full, as above.
- Magnum (1.5 L): about 3.3 lb of wine alone. Add the glass, which is heavier than a standard bottle’s, and a full magnum is well over 4 pounds.
If you collect large formats, see our magnum wine rack guide for spacing and the racks built for them.
Case of wine weight
A standard case holds 12 bottles of 750 ml. Using the figures above (our math, bottles only):
| Case of 12 | Bottles only |
|---|---|
| Lightweight glass | About 14 kg (31 lb) |
| Average glass | About 15.6 kg (34 lb) |
| Heavy glass | About 18 kg (40 lb) |
| Champagne | About 19 kg (42 lb) |
The cardboard or wooden case and any dividers add more on top. In practice, plan on a case of wine weighing roughly 30 to 45 pounds when you lift it, and lift with your legs.
What wine bottle weight means for storage
Bottle weight adds up fast once you store more than a few dozen. Here is what some of our VintageView racks hold, using the average 2.9 lb per bottle (our math, wine and glass only, not the rack):
| Rack | Capacity | Approximate bottle load |
|---|---|---|
| Case & Crate Bin 3 (3.5 ft tall) | 48 x 750 ml or 24 x 1.5 L | About 138 lb |
| Case & Crate Bin 6 Kit, one column | 96 x 750 ml | About 275 lb |
| Case & Crate Bin 6 Kit, 3 extensions | 384 x 750 ml | About 1,100 lb |
| W Series Mag Rack | 9 magnums single deep, 18 double deep | 30 or 60 lb of wine alone, plus heavy glass |
Three practical takeaways:
- Wall racks: how you mount them matters more as weight climbs. Our wall mounting guide covers studs, anchors and backing, so we will not repeat it here. VintageView’s W Series Wine Rack 5 and Evolution Wine Wall 30 3C include hardware for drywall and wood-backed walls.
- Freestanding storage: the Case & Crate listings ask you to fasten the unit to the wall, with hardware for drywall or wood included. A loaded column is very heavy, so do not skip that step. For large-format walls, a W Series Frame Mag 10 carries racks floor to ceiling instead of hanging the load on drywall alone.
- Big collections on upper floors: a few hundred bottles concentrated along one wall can weigh half a ton or more (the 384-bottle kit above is about 1,100 lb of bottles). If you are planning a dense cellar on a framed floor rather than a slab, ask a contractor or structural engineer to look at it.
To estimate how many bottles your wall can hold before you work out the weight, use our wine wall capacity guide, and see the full wine rack and cellar storage guide or all VintageView racks. Frequently asked questions
How much does a full bottle of wine weigh in pounds?
About 2.9 pounds for a typical 750 ml still wine, with a range of roughly 2.6 to 3.3 pounds depending on the glass. A full Champagne bottle is about 3.5 pounds.
How much does an empty wine bottle weigh?
Most empty 750 ml bottles weigh 420 to 750 g (0.9 to 1.7 lb). The average still wine bottle is about 550 g (1.2 lb), according to the Sustainable Wine Roundtable figures reported by Decanter.
How much does a case of wine weigh?
Twelve 750 ml bottles weigh about 31 to 40 pounds, before the box, depending on the glass. A case of Champagne is about 42 pounds of bottles.
Why are some wine bottles so heavy?
Some producers have used heavy glass for premium wines, as the Burgundy example above shows, and sparkling wine needs thick glass to hold pressure. Many producers and retailers are moving to lighter bottles to cut shipping weight and emissions.
