Great overall. Kamado Joe Big Block charcoal is a great general use fuel for your grill. You can order for delivery in quantities up to half and full pallets or you can find it at retail stores like Lowe's.
★★★★★ Grant July 31, 2026 · Kendallville, IN
Not as uniform as i expected. I was disappointed in quality in the "XL Block" as it was more L & M with 1 or 2 XL chunks in the 20# bag. If this was marketed as Large i would actually agree but it's just not what i expected to get at all.

The "One" Charcoal. This is the only charcoal to use. The heat is incredible and the flavor it adds to your food is outstanding. If you want other flavors add - smoking chips. The Big Block burns long an clean.

★★★★★ Rickp February 20, 2026 · Tybee Island
XL chunks are the best. I’ve honestly not used many different brands, but these have a great smoke flavor - not to strong or bitter - and are easy to start, burn very consistently, and don’t leave a bunch of ash to clean out of the hopper. They are my Go To lump coal

Great. I really enjoyed it and it's so good. Wow. I really enjoyed it.
★★★★★ Brew February 11, 2026 · SF Bay Area
Great product, when on sale. The lump charcoal is fairly consistent in size and usually in the 2-4" lump size. There are usually some very large chunks, 4"-8+", that I set aside in a separate bag to use for lengthy smoking. When available in the somewhere near $1/lb price, it's worth stocking up.
★★★★★ Steveoh February 7, 2026 · CA
Best lump. Clean burn and lasts long. Great flavor too. Big chunks in the bag
★★★★★ MikeP February 5, 2026 · Atlanta
Best Burn Yet! Great product. The Argentinian wood burns very even and for a long time. You get multiple burns from much of the same charcoal unlike most lump charcoal that makes an ash out of itself after just one time.

Big Block. It's all I use and I've had great success with this product
★★★★★ TimB4308 February 4, 2026 · WI
Great Product. Big Block XL Lump Charcoal has become my go-to fuel because it hits the sweet spot of value and performance. The first thing you notice is the chunk size—it’s loaded with big pieces instead of a bag of crumbs, which makes it easier to stack, lights consistently, and keeps airflow strong in the firebox.
Where it really wins is burn time. It runs hot and steady for a long time, which is perfect for overnight cooks and long low-and-slow sessions without constantly topping off. Even on higher-temp cooks, it holds heat well and recovers quickly after opening the lid.
For the price, you get a bag that lasts and performs like premium lump should: big chunks, long burns, and solid value. If you want fewer reloads and more consistent cooks, Big Block XL is an easy recommendation.

★★★★★ Tunas February 4, 2026 · Louisville, KY
The best lumps I've found. I can't find this too often here in KY but when I do I stock up. It lights fast, burns well with no sparking at all. After shutting it down after cooking there still a decent supply to reuse. I'll keep using it whenever I can get it.
★★★★★ PinGA February 4, 2026 · Brunswick, GA
Good charcoal. Bought this when I needed charcoal for my new classic Joe. This was available and I knew it would work well. Not disappointed with the performance at all. It did have large amount of small pieces and but carries a premium price, that’s why I gave it 4 stars vs 5. Will I buy it again, probably. But, maybe not use it exclusively.
★★★★★ Lowe's February 4, 2026 · North Texas
Nothing comes close! I have tried so many different charcoals over the years. I stumbled on Kamado charcoal just by chance. I was not expecting what it was going to make my chicken taste like. Its like going to a great Chinese place and the fried rice has that insane smoky flavor from how hot the wok gets. There isn't even a word that lets me express it correctly. Real charcoal flavor like if Paul Bunyan grilled it.
★★★★★ Zo_21 February 4, 2026

Best charcoal. I have had my joe classic for about 6 months. I have used big box stores charcoal. I bought a1/2 pallet of this charcoal and have to learn my joe all over. It gets hot faster, stays hot longer and you use less charcoal. Over all it's cheaper than a big box store.
★★★★★ Tunas September 17, 2025 · Louisville, KY
Solid band of lump charcoal. The brand I use whenever I can find it. It's not easy to find around here but when I do find it I stock up. Consistently, it's mostly larger chunks throughout
★★★★★ Huskerduck September 17, 2025 · Elgin, IL
My family’s favorite lump for flavor. The Big Block lump coal has definitely provided the cleanest, best tasting and smelling lump charcoal (we have tried plenty). It has has the largest chunks for longer cooks, on a consistent basis. I tend to save the largest chunks for when I am, in fact, doing a long smoking session @ lower temperatures. It’s definitely not the cheapest (reason I’ve tried several others), but definitely a family pleaser and therefore the regular lump coal in my Kamado Joe!
★★★★★ Smoking DT September 17, 2025
Best charcoal out there. I cheated once and tried a different brand, that wont happen again. From burn time to temperature and ease of lighting this is the best charcoal hands down .
★★★★★ Dan'l September 17, 2025 · Gap PA
lovin the big chunks. I've used this in my kamado grill for both low-and-slow smoking and high-heat searing. The lump charcoal lights clean, burns hot, and lasts a long time. Most chunks are big and dense — perfect for airflow and heat retention
★★★★★ C Adams September 17, 2025 · Aurora, IL
Best Lump. I’ve tried almost all of the top brands of lump and I find myself coming back to the Big Block. It is the most consistent in terms of sustaining heat and I have almost none of that annoying popping. The flavor is not overpowering so your wood chunks can do its job. This summer I did a brisket for 10 hours then added a small amount of coals to the basket and it went another 4 hours to cook 3 racks of ribs. Fantastic product!

Some Serious Lump. The KJ Big Block XL Lump Charcoal is, by far, my preferred lump for my Classic Joe cooks! Nothing worse than getting a new bag of other lump charcoals and finding it mostly crumbs, its a Royal rip off! I have never had this problem with Big Block XL Lump Charcoal. Great lump, I highly recommend this product.

Not just lumps of coal. I made a huge purchase and bought multiple bags because I’m such a huge fan. I use a starter to light it up in a chimney and it burns slowly and perfectly every time! I love the smell of this charcoal and it breaks up very nicely when it burns.
★★★★★ Asyd03 September 17, 2025 · Minnesota
Quality Versatile Charcoal. Good mix and consistency of lump sizes. Mostly medium to large with a few very large pieces in each bag. Works great for grilling and low slow smokes. Very little smokiness with the charcoal allowing for fine control of smoke with wood.
★★★★★ KamadoSam September 17, 2025 · Houston, TX
Real wood chunks! I only use Kamado Big Block for my cooks. Real wood chunks that burn hot and slow. Won’t use anything else.
★★★★★ Sonny September 17, 2025 · Greensburg, Indiana
Best Lump Charcoal available. Purchased at assortment of suppliers when available (warm weather). Buy up to 3 bags at a time due to my distance to stores where it is available. Easy to light without all the sparking of other brands. Clean fresh tasting smoked meats when doing long smokes where other brands get to smoky and often, a bitter taste. The only reason for a 4 Star evaluation on value is due to the lack of availability in rural settings (25 miles to nearest supplier).
★★★★★ CurryL September 17, 2025 · North Carolina
Fantastic Charcoal. No, you do not have to use Joe charcoal with your Komodo Joe. But.... the quality is there. It is excellent charcoal, lights quickly and maintains its fire. Highly recommend.

★★★★★ ALanzo1 September 17, 2025 · Lawrenceville, GA
Consistent Charcoal Sizes and Long Burning. Some people may think charcoal is charcoal, let me tell you nothing could be further from the truth. Your charcoal selection can make or break your cook. There are a number of characteristics that a charcoal must have to make it great. Arguably the most important is the consistency in size of all the pieces in the bag. Some brands you’ll find giant chunks and millions of small almost unusable pieces. When you pour that type of charcoal in the grill it lessens the amount of airflow between pieces and can be hard to light or stay lit resulting in uneven cooks. Kamado Joes XL charcoal has large consistently sized pieces and I’ve never gotten a bag with small pieces or rocks in the bottom. I know what I’m getting when I use this charcoal and that’s good food. Another very important characteristic is the quality of wood used to make the charcoal. I’ve bought charcoal that looked like it was made from old 2x4’s and the food’s taste reflected that. Kamado Joes charcoal is high quality hardwood without the weird aftertastes. I would recommend this charcoal to anyone.

★★★★★ fordgrills September 5, 2025 · Chicago, IL
The only Lump Charcoal I use. I have tried many different brands during the 8 or so years of grilling. Some have too small pieces, some are too sparky, some have strange taste. I like Big Block for it's consistent taste and burn. The lump size can vary from bag to bag so I usually work from two bags at once so I can mix and match the size I want for the type of cook I am doing. This allows me to tailor my cook to meet my needs. It is really a good value when buying in half or full pallet quantities.

Outstanding Charcoal – Long-Lasting & Flavorful. I’ve used a lot of different lump charcoals over the years, but Komodo Joe’s Big Block stands out as the clear winner. I run both a Big Joe and a Joe Jr., and this charcoal performs perfectly in each. The extra-large chunks light easily, burn hot and steady, and give off a clean, smoky flavor that elevates everything from quick weeknight cooks to long, low-and-slow sessions.
What really makes the Big Block shine is how long it lasts compared to other brands I can find locally. I get significantly more cook time per load, which not only saves money in the long run but also keeps me from having to constantly refuel mid-cook. On top of that, the flavor is unmatched—just the right hint of wood-smoked taste without any harsh or chemical after-notes.
If you’re looking for the best fuel for your Komodo Joe—or really any charcoal grill—this is the perfect choice. Durable, flavorful, and dependable. Once you try it, you won’t want to go back to store-bought brands.

Great High Quality Charcoal. I purchased some of this charcoal to try in my KJ Classic. I was impressed with the high quality and larger pieces. Compared to three other brands that I have tried, it is clear that this stuff is superior. Pricing is a bit high on this charcoal, but you get what you pay for! I do find that for nightly cooks where I am doing steaks, burgers, and other quick cooking foods, I get several cooks out of a load of charcoal. Simply close the dampers right after cooking and you will have a significant amount of charcoal left for the next cook. This leads to lower charcoal use and the bag lasting longer.
