A recessed electric fireplace installation comes down to three numbers: how deep your wall cavity is, the rough opening the manufacturer specifies, and the circuit you will plug or wire it into. Get those right and recessing a linear fireplace is a framing job, not a construction project, because electric units need no chimney, vent or gas line. This guide walks through the measurements, which Amantii models fit a standard 2×4 wall, and the steps from layout to trim. It uses figures from Amantii’s own installation manuals and our product listings; always follow the manual for your exact model.
Start with wall depth: 2×4 vs 2×6 vs a bump-out
Lumber is sold by nominal size. A 2×4 stud is actually about 3.5 inches deep and a 2×6 about 5.5 inches. Add your drywall (usually 1/2 inch) and a 2×4 wall gives you roughly 4 inches from the back of the cavity to the finished face. That one figure decides which fireplaces you can recess without building out the wall.
| Wall | Cavity depth (approx.) | To face of 1/2 in drywall | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2×4 stud wall | 3.5 in | 4 in | Units marketed for 2×4 walls, such as XtraSlim models |
| 2×6 stud wall | 5.5 in | 6 in | Slim units with more depth |
| Framed bump-out or false wall | Whatever you build | Your choice | Deep units such as the Panorama series |
Measure your real wall before ordering. Older homes, plaster walls and 5/8 inch drywall all change the numbers.
Recessed electric fireplace for a 2×4 wall: models that fit
Several Amantii fireplaces we carry are designed around shallow walls:
- Traditional XtraSlim: our listings for the 30 inch Traditional XtraSlim and 33 inch say they can be recessed into any 2×4 wall or wall mounted. Amantii’s Traditional XtraSlim manual lists rough openings of 25 1/2 x 17 in (26 inch model), 29 5/8 x 19 3/8 in (30 inch) and 32 x 22 1/2 in (33 inch), each 4 3/8 in deep.
- Symmetry XtraSlim: our 42 inch Symmetry XtraSlim listing says it can be mounted or recessed into any 2×4 wall, with WiFi app control.
- Symmetry Basic: the 50 inch Symmetry Basic can be fully recessed or semi-flush mounted within a 2×4 wall, but the semi-flush option requires the separate SYM-XS surround, per our listing.
Note the XtraSlim manual’s 4 3/8 inch rough opening depth versus roughly 4 inches in a 2×4 wall with 1/2 inch drywall. Compare the manual figure for your exact model with your own wall measurement; if the unit is deeper than your wall, plan for the face to sit slightly proud or fur the wall out, and confirm the detail with your installer.
When you need more depth
The Panorama Slim is described on our listing as under 7 inches deep, and Amantii’s Panorama BI-SLIM manual calls for a rough opening 7 in deep and 24 in high (40, 50, 60, 73 or 89 in wide depending on the model). That is deeper than a 2×6 wall, so these usually go in a framed bump-out or media wall. The payoff is a fully built-in look: the manual says finishing material such as drywall, stone or tile can run right to the glass edge, or you can use the included trim. Panorama models are also rated for indoor or outdoor installation.
Electrical requirements
Amantii’s manuals for both the Traditional XtraSlim and Symmetry Slim series say a 15 amp, 120 volt, 60 Hz branch circuit with proper ground must be available at the location, and that a dedicated circuit is preferred so the breaker does not trip. The Traditional XtraSlim is rated at 1465 W maximum. Key points:
- Plug in or hardwire: these units ship with a cord for a grounded 120 V outlet. If you want to hardwire, the manuals say a qualified electrician must remove the cord connection and wire it to household wiring per local code (NFPA 70 in the U.S.).
- Outlet location: put the outlet inside the framed cavity or in an adjacent accessible spot so the cord is hidden. Check the cord exit side and length in your manual before you place the box.
- New circuits: use a licensed electrician and check whether your area requires a permit.
How to install an electric fireplace in a wall, step by step
- Pick the location. Amantii’s manuals say to choose a spot not prone to moisture, at least 3 feet from combustibles such as curtains, furniture and bedding, and out of direct sunlight on the screen. Interior walls are simplest; recessing into an exterior wall means working around insulation and vapor barrier, so many people build a shallow bump-out instead.
- Check for obstructions. Find studs, pipes, ducts and existing wiring before you cut.
- Test the fireplace first. Both manuals say to plug it into a grounded 120 V outlet and confirm it works before installing.
- Frame the rough opening. Build the opening to the manual’s dimensions with a header and sill between studs. The XtraSlim and Symmetry Slim manuals call for at least 1/4 inch of space around the edge of the appliance.
- Run power. Install the outlet or hardwire junction box as planned.
- Finish the wall. Hang and finish drywall or tile around the opening, following any clearance notes. Amantii’s Symmetry Slim manual, for example, requires at least 1/2 inch clearance to a mantel, measured from the trim.
- Set and secure the unit. Slide it into the opening and screw it to the framing. Panorama BI-SLIM units use framing plates screwed to the wall studs.
- Add media and trim. Place the glass media or logs, reinstall the front glass and attach the surround.
Heat output and room size
Recessing does not change heat output. Our listings put the Symmetry Basic and WM-FM series at 4800 BTU of supplemental heat for roughly 400 to 500 square feet. On models such as the Panorama Deep, our listing notes the heater and flames operate independently, so you can run the flame alone in summer. If you plan to mount a TV above, check the heat outlet location and Amantii’s clearance notes for your model before you finalize the height.

Frequently asked questions
Can you recess an electric fireplace into a 2×4 wall?
Yes, with a shallow model. Our listings for Amantii’s Traditional XtraSlim and Symmetry XtraSlim say they can be recessed into a 2×4 wall. Compare the manual’s rough opening depth with your measured wall depth first.
Does a recessed electric fireplace need a dedicated circuit?
Amantii’s manuals require a 15 amp, 120 V grounded circuit and say a dedicated circuit is preferred to avoid tripping the breaker.
How deep does the wall need to be for a recessed electric fireplace?
It depends on the unit. Amantii’s Traditional XtraSlim manual lists a 4 3/8 inch deep rough opening, while the Panorama BI-SLIM manual lists 7 inches, which needs a bump-out or deeper wall.
Do I need an electrician to install an electric fireplace in a wall?
For a plug-in unit on an existing outlet, framing is carpentry. For hardwiring or a new circuit, Amantii’s manuals call for a qualified electrician working to local code.
How much clearance does a recessed electric fireplace need?
Follow your model’s manual. Amantii’s manuals call for at least 1/4 inch around the unit in the opening, about 3 feet from combustibles in front, and, on Symmetry Slim models, at least 1/2 inch to a mantel.
