Can You Put a Sauna in a Basement?

Yes, you can put a sauna in a basement, and for many homes it is the easiest indoor spot: a concrete floor, spare room and often the electrical panel nearby. A sauna in basement space brings its own problems, though: a cold slab, damp air, ceilings broken up by ducts and beams, a narrow stairway for delivery and sometimes flood risk. This guide covers those basement specifics using our listing specs and the Harvia KIP heater manual (PDF). For the broader decision, see indoor vs outdoor sauna.

Prefab cabin or site built room?

  • Prefab infrared cabin: wall, roof and floor panels that stand on your slab. Our hemlock cabins ship with a separate “Roof and Floor” carton, so they bring their own floor. Small ones plug into 120V.
  • Prefab traditional cabin: our indoor traditional hemlock sauna listing ($3,173.99) lists a 3 kW metal stove and temperatures up to 90°C (194°F).
  • Site built room: you frame, insulate and panel a room, then add a heater such as the Harvia KIP electric heater (from $1,214). Almost Heaven notes its traditional indoor saunas use your existing floor, so the slab becomes the sauna floor.

Basement sauna moisture and the concrete floor

Basements run damp, and a traditional heater adds steam. Sort out the room first.

  • Fix water first. Look for stains, white mineral deposits or a musty smell. If the space has ever flooded, keep the sauna away from the low spot and sump, or call a waterproofing contractor before you buy.
  • Run a dehumidifier in the surrounding room and leave the sauna door open after use so the wood dries.
  • Vapor barrier for site built rooms. Almost Heaven’s guide to preparing an indoor sauna space calls for a foil faced vapor barrier so moisture does not seep into surrounding walls; freestanding saunas skip framing but still need a dry, well ventilated area. The KIP manual specifies R11 foil backed fiberglass, foil facing into the room.
  • Infrared cabins are not wet room products. Our one person hemlock indoor sauna and two person hemlock indoor sauna both list “Waterproof: No.”

What goes on the slab

Almost Heaven’s article on indoor sauna flooring calls an unfinished concrete basement almost as easy as it gets, suggests duckboard on top for cold feet, and does not recommend carpet. The KIP manual lists concrete, ceramic tile or heavy duty vinyl, and says wooden duckboard should not be used as flooring. The sources disagree, so follow your heater’s manual. A drain is optional for most home saunas: the KIP manual says one should be provided in new construction, especially commercial saunas.

Ceiling height, ducts and beams

Measure from the slab to the lowest duct, beam or pipe where the sauna will stand, not just the ceiling. Compare it with the listed exterior height and leave room to lift the roof panel during assembly (check your manual).

  • Our cabins mostly stand 74 to 77 inches: 74.8 inches for the Lucia one person sauna, 76.38 inches for the two person hemlock cabin.
  • For a site built room, the KIP manual shows a minimum height of 6 feet 2 inches and says the ceiling should be no higher than 7 feet, so a modest basement ceiling can work.

For bench depth and interior sizes, see our sauna size guide.

Getting it down the stairs

Flat pack cartons are nearly wall height. Measure stair width, headroom at the turn and the basement door.

  • One person hemlock cabin: a 71 x 35.5 x 6.2 inch package.
  • Two person hemlock cabin: cartons up to 73.2 x 44.9 x 6.7 inches.
  • Three person hemlock cabin: a 75.59 x 66.46 x 7.64 inch carton weighing 168.87 lb, the hardest to turn on a landing.
  • Indoor traditional hemlock sauna: packaging listed at 189.5 x 119.5 x 64.5 cm (about 74.6 x 47 x 25.4 inches). Ask us how it splits.

Our SteamSpa listings say curbside delivery, so plan for two people to carry boxes down.

Electrical and ventilation in a basement

Small infrared cabins on our listings run on 120V: 1,460 W for the one person hemlock and 1,750 W for the two person. The three person hemlock lists 120V, 2,130 W and a 20A plug, so it needs a 20 amp outlet. Some listings omit voltage: the SteamSpa Viti two person lists 1,725 W and the Curacao three person 2,300 W, so call us to confirm. Traditional heaters need 240V (the KIP manual also covers 208V three phase). Breakers and wire sizes are in our home sauna electrical requirements guide. A licensed electrician and local code have the final word, and most areas need a permit.

The KIP manual puts the control panel and power unit in a dry place, away from a spa, pool or shower, and allows no receptacle inside the sauna room. It asks for a lower vent near the heater about 4 inches off the floor and an adjustable upper vent on the opposite wall, for about five air changes per hour. In a basement, that air needs somewhere to go; a closed utility room just gets warm and humid. Several of our hemlock cabins list a ventilator scoop, and the room around them still needs normal airflow.

Fire safety, doors and clearances

  • Keep the clearances in your manual. The KIP table lists 3 to 5 inches from adjacent surfaces by heater size, plus a wood guard rail around the heater.
  • The KIP manual says the door must open out and should not have a lock.
  • Keep a clear path to the stairs for anyone light headed after a session.

Sauna in basement checklist

  1. Check the slab and walls for water.
  2. Measure the lowest ceiling point against cabin height plus assembly room.
  3. Measure stairs and doors against carton sizes.
  4. Confirm voltage, wattage and plug; get an electrician’s quote and permit.
  5. Plan ventilation and a dehumidifier.
  6. Choose flooring and clearances per your manual.

Garage sauna as an alternative

A garage sauna shares the concrete floor and easy power, but an unheated garage means a cold cabin and longer warm up, dust gets into the wood, and vehicle exhaust is a reason never to idle a car nearby. Our hemlock cabins are not rated waterproof, so avoid a wet garage floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is basement sauna moisture a real problem?

It can be. Infrared adds little humidity, but water on hot rocks adds steam to a damp space. Use a vapor barrier in a site built room, ventilate per the manual and run a dehumidifier.

Do I need a floor drain?

Usually not for a home dry sauna. The KIP manual recommends one in new construction, especially commercial saunas.

Is a garage sauna better than a basement sauna?

Not usually. A garage is colder and dustier, while a basement is typically conditioned space closer to the panel.

Can a basement sauna sit on carpet?

Almost Heaven and the KIP manual both advise against carpet. Use concrete, tile or water resistant vinyl.

The KIP manual warns against alcohol in the sauna and staying in more than 30 minutes at a time. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition or take medication, see your doctor first.
