Sierra Flame Electric Fireplace Review: Wall Mount vs Stove

A Sierra Flame electric fireplace is a straightforward pick if you want a modern linear unit that can hang on a finished wall today and be recessed later, or a cast iron stove that just plugs in. We carry four models: the 32, 40 and 55 inch wall mount fireplaces and the Lynwood E50 freestanding stove, priced from $1,199 to $2,199. This is a spec based buyer review built from our product listings and Sierra Flame’s own pages and spec sheets. We have not tested these units hands on.

Who is Sierra Flame?

Sierra Flame started as a gas fireplace brand. Its About Us page says the company was founded by Brian Richards, describes Amantii electric fireplaces as its sister company, and says Sierra Flame also makes electric inserts, freestanding, linear and zero clearance models. The electric product pages describe the units as “Sierra Flame by Amantii,” and the manuals and some spec sheets are hosted on amantii.com.

The Sierra Flame lineup we sell

All four are in stock as of this writing; see them all on our Sierra Flame brand page. Our wall mount listings do not print a model number. Their descriptions (charcoal steel front, recess or surface mount, crystal ember bed) match Sierra Flame’s WM-FML-STL series, and the 32, 40 and 55 inch surround widths match the WM-FML-26, WM-FML-34 and WM-FML-48 spec sheets. The dimensions and wattage below come from those sheets, so confirm the exact model with us before you frame an opening.

Sources: our product listings, the Sierra Flame WM-FML-26, WM-FML-34 and WM-FML-48 spec sheets, and the E50 spec sheet. Two details differ between sources: our listings name five flame colors (yellow, orange, blue, violet and rose) while Sierra Flame’s pages describe yellow, orange and red, and the spec sheets list about 400 sq ft of heating area while the maker’s pages say up to 500 sq ft and 5,000 BTU. If either matters to you, confirm with us.

Sierra Flame wall mount or Sierra Flame stove?

Choose a Sierra Flame wall mount if

  • You want a linear look on a living room or bedroom wall, with the option to recess it later during a remodel.
  • Floor space is tight. The body is about 6 1/8 inches deep before the surround.

Choose the Sierra Flame stove if

  • You want a traditional stove look with a log set rather than a modern linear flame.
  • You cannot or do not want to open or mount anything on a wall. Sierra Flame’s E50 page says it needs virtually no assembly and suits a corner.
  • You like real cast iron. The spec sheet puts it at 114.9 lb, so plan for two people to move it.

On heat, all four use the same 1,465 W high setting on 120V, so choose on looks and placement. For placing a wall unit, see how high to mount an electric fireplace.

Installation and power

Every Sierra Flame we sell runs on 120V. The WM-FML-STL manual shows a cord with the plug on the left side and a 76 inch cord, and says to plug it into a grounded 120V outlet. It calls for a 15 amp, 120V branch circuit, preferably dedicated, and warns against extension cords. Our 32 and 40 inch listings describe the units as direct wire ready; the 55 inch listing says you can surface mount it and simply plug it in. Per the manual, hardwiring means a qualified electrician removes the cord connection and wires the unit to local code.

The E50 page lists it as thermostat and hardwire ready, with the same 76 inch cord. Whatever you buy, a licensed electrician and your local code have the final word on new circuits, outlets inside a wall, or hardwiring.

Sierra Flame vs Amantii

Here are three Amantii models near the same price, using only what our listings state:

  • Amantii Symmetry 42-In Basic, $1,099. A built-in only (recessed, or semi-flush in a 2×4 wall with the SYM-XS surround), plug-in or hardwire, 4,800 BTU for 400 to 500 sq ft, five flame colors and a reflective glass ember bed. It cannot hang on a finished wall like the Sierra Flame.
  • Amantii WM-FM Series 34-In, from $1,498. Wall mount or recessed, black glass surround (white glass optional), a driftwood log set plus a choice of ember or ice media, three heat settings and 13 back light colors. You get more media than the Sierra Flame 32 at about $300 more.
  • Amantii WM-FM Series 50-In, from $1,537. Same mount options, 4,800 BTU for 400 to 500 sq ft, log set and media choice. It sits between the Sierra Flame 40 and 55 on price.

The short version: Sierra Flame wall mounts use a charcoal steel front with a crystal ember bed and touch controls, and the 32 inch is the lowest priced wall mount option of the group. Amantii WM-FM models swap in a black glass surround, a log set and a media choice, and the Symmetry Basic is cheaper but built-in only. Who each Sierra Flame model suits

  • 32-In: bedrooms, home offices and condos. It is also our compact pick in best electric fireplaces for apartments and condos.
  • 40-In: average living rooms.
  • 55-In: long walls and open plans; its listing rates heat for up to 400 sq ft.
  • Lynwood E50: corners and traditional rooms with no wall work.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Sierra Flame wall mount plug into a regular outlet?

The manual shows a corded plug for a grounded 120V outlet on a 15 amp circuit, preferably dedicated, and it can also be hardwired by a qualified electrician.

How much heat does the Sierra Flame stove put out?

Our listing states 4,800 BTU for 400 to 500 sq ft with two heat settings. Sierra Flame’s page says up to 5,000 BTU, and the spec sheet lists 1,465 W on high. It is supplemental heat, not a furnace.

Is Sierra Flame made by Amantii?

Sierra Flame calls Amantii its sister company and labels its electrics “Sierra Flame by Amantii.” It does not say where each unit is manufactured.
