Towel warmer not heating? The cause is usually simple: no power reaching the unit, a timer in its off cycle, a switch that has failed, or, less often, a heating element at the end of its life. WarmlyYours’ troubleshooting guide names those same four causes and says most problems can be diagnosed at home in under 30 minutes. Work through the steps below from easiest to hardest. Before you touch anything beyond the plug or the switch, turn the power off; Myson’s towel warmer manual starts its troubleshooting the same way, by isolating the electrical supply.
Towel warmer not heating: quick symptom guide
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Completely dead, no light, no warmth | No power: GFCI, breaker or plug | Step 1 |
| Worked yesterday, cold today | Timer off cycle or auto shutoff | Step 2 |
| Wall switch on, unit still cold | Separate switch on the unit is off | Step 3 |
| Turns on but stays cold | Failed switch or heating element | Steps 3 and 5 |
| Warm, but towels feel barely warm | Normal low wattage, towel folding, warm up time | Step 4 |
| Works on and off | Loose wiring connection or failing switch | Step 5 |
Step 1: Check power, the GFCI and the breaker
WarmlyYours says ruling out the power supply resolves a surprising number of “not working” calls.
- Plug in models: make sure the plug is fully seated and test the outlet with another device, such as a phone charger.
- Press Reset on the GFCI. Bathroom outlets are usually GFCI protected, and the protecting outlet may be a different one on the same circuit. A tripped GFCI is one of the most common causes of a suddenly dead towel warmer.
- Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, especially on hardwired units.
If the GFCI trips again right away, stop. WarmlyYours notes this can point to a wiring problem that needs an electrician.
Step 2: Towel warmer timer and schedule settings
Many towel warmers have a countdown or programmable timer, and an off cycle is easy to mistake for a fault. WarmlyYours points out that countdown timers shut the unit off after a set period, that a power outage can reset a programmable timer’s clock and scramble the schedule, and that WiFi models can stop responding if they lose their connection.
Switch the unit on manually first. If it heats, the hardware is fine and you only need to reset the clock or reprogram the schedule. Some models, such as the ANZZI Kiln Series 6-Bar floor mounted towel warmer, list a 2 to 4 hour timer, so it will switch itself off after that window.
Step 3: Heated towel rail cold? Check the switch
Some towel warmers have their own switch in addition to the wall switch. Bathroom Butler’s guide to heated towel racks that won’t work notes its switch is tucked away at the bottom of one post, so discreetly that people often miss it, and it must be turned on separately before the unit warms. Look over the posts and the bottom of the frame for a small rocker or dial. The plug in ANZZI models we carry list an on/off switch on the unit.
If the switch is on and the unit still stays cold, the switch itself may have failed. WarmlyYours calls the switch the single most common reason a towel warmer turns on but won’t heat, and shows how to test its own switches with an ohmmeter: the reading should change when you flip the switch. Testing and replacing a switch means handling wires, so do it only with the power off, use the exact replacement part for your model, and hire a licensed electrician if you are not comfortable. On hardwired units, any work at the connection belongs to an electrician.
Step 4: Make sure it is really a problem
A towel warmer that is working can still feel underwhelming. Before calling for service, check three things.
Wattage and warm up time
Plug in towel warmers are low wattage appliances, so they warm gently. The ANZZI models below list 65 to 90 watts and about a 20 minute warm up time. Give the unit at least that long before judging it.
How the towel is hung
Bathroom Butler explains that a heated towel rack’s main job is drying towels with a touch of warmth, not dryer style heat. It recommends folding towels twice to make four layers so warm air is trapped under the towel. The top of a towel will also feel warmer than the bottom, because hot air rises.
Unheated posts
On some designs not every part of the frame heats. Bathroom Butler notes that on its racks one vertical post carries no element because only the horizontal bars are meant to dry towels. Check your manual before assuming a cold post means a fault.
Step 5: Element, wiring and when to call a pro
If power, timer and switch all check out, WarmlyYours lists the less common causes: a partial heating element failure, bunched towels blocking airflow, loose connections on a hardwired unit, and a failed element that may be covered under warranty. Leave all of these to the manufacturer or a licensed electrician. Never open the element housing yourself, and never keep using a unit that smells hot, sparks or trips the breaker.
WarmlyYours also offers a useful rule on repair versus replace: a failed switch is not a reason to replace the whole unit, but if the element has failed on an old unit that is out of warranty, replacement may cost less than repair.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my towel warmer not working or heating up?
The usual causes are a tripped GFCI or breaker, a timer in its off cycle, a separate on unit switch left off, or a failed switch. A failed heating element is less common.
How long does a towel warmer take to heat up?
The ANZZI models we carry list about 20 minutes. Other brands vary, so check your manual.
Why does only part of my heated towel rail get warm?
On some designs one post has no element, and hot air rising means the top bars and the top of the towel feel warmer. Uneven warmth is normal; a fully cold unit is not.
Can I fix a towel warmer myself?
Resetting a GFCI or breaker, checking the timer and finding the on unit switch are safe homeowner checks. Switch replacement, hardwired connections and element problems should go to the manufacturer or a licensed electrician.
The same breaker and GFCI checks apply to other electric heat in the home; see our electric fireplace troubleshooting guide, and our how to heat a sunroom guide for warming a cold room.
